  • Planting Leeks in a pot might not be a bad idea particularly if your short of space and you have some spare Leeks. There's only one way to find out. Let's do it. This video is only part of the story. If you want to see how the story ends click on this link • How to grow organic ve... to watch one of the follow up video's that I have posted.

    This works!! Good to see someone not wasting their time with 'filling the hole with water to just cover the roots'. What a waste of time - but everyone seems to do it for some reason. This video is what productive growing is all about - maximum yield in the smallest space with the minimum effort. Highly recommended practice in this video!! Great work.

      Hello the cheveron. Blackbirds like to sit as high as they can then sing their hearts out. The one on this video sits on the house roof next door and tries to outsing any other Blackbirds in the neighbourhood. HGV

    I started with your leek reveal video so I came back to this one. I can't believe how small these starts were! I think I'm going to plant some leek seeds using my Winter Sowing technique, putting the seeds out in winter in the snow in mini greenhouses. Think it will work? I'll let you know if I get leek seedlings in spring!
    Sheryl :)

      Hello Sheryl
      I have just sown some leek seeds indoors. I expect I will grow then on for about 2 months on a windowsill then move them outdoors to 'harden off'. The early potatoes (not yet planted) will be harvested from pots early summer and the compost returned to the pot. I will add a little fertiliser and then plant the leeks in that pot. Two crops from one pot in one growing season. At least that's the plan. The leeks will grow on and stand through winter and even if they get frozen in I have a cunning plan. Click the link to see how its done. ua-cam.com/video/H1icW773z9Q/v-deo.html
      PS I don't think your leeks will germinate in a cold greenhouse. Try some indoors and some outdoors to give yourself a better chance of success. Thanks for the comment.

    I’m not sure how these turned out but my preference is to not fill the holes back in but let the leeks grow to fill the space. Otherwise it can lead to a gritty shaft and trust me, nobody likes a gritty shaft!

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  8 років тому +1

      +Rex Koenig Hello Rex. I start seeds in a seed tray or a smaller plant pot. Start more than you need. I then transplant the leeks into this larger pot to grow on. Another way of doing this is to just buy the small leek plants from your local garden center ( April-May-June is soon enough) and transplant them into a pot. Hope this helps.

      Fruits For Life
      Hello Vinny: The leaks were a great success as you have now
      seen on the follow up video. I will do the same again this year. When I empty a
      pot off early potatoes in two or three
      months time, I will re use the compost, re use the pot, chuck in a slack hand
      full of Blood Fish and Bone, bang some leeks in and we're off. Take a look at
      this vid. It's typical of what can be achieved with early potatoes in these pots. ua-cam.com/video/SqooPDEMmOo/v-deo.html

    0:55 that looked to be only 1 to 1-1/2 inches deep. How critical Is the depth?

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  10 років тому

      Hello Lenny
      I planted the leeks about 3" deep and about 2" below the top of the pot. Since then the leeks have grown and I have topped the pot off with compost so the roots of the leeks are about 5" down. That should give me 5"+ of shank(white),when I drop the pot, in a week or two's time(look out for the video). The leeks were like a blade of grass when I potted them, some are now about 1" thick. Whatever I get it will be a bonus as I had no room in my raised beds for them. Planting depth is not that critical but if you have a go at growing leeks in pots, as they get bigger they will blow over, so try to stand them in a sheltered location. Hope this helps.

    How do you make the white part longer?

    • @HomeGrownVeg
      @HomeGrownVeg  7 років тому

      Hello Um. By excluding the light you will make more white. Plant the leek deep or pull up earth around it as it grows or as I do, use a collar that keeps the light out and the shank in the dark.
