The words are the best part! It's about a princess who has a contest to choose a husband. They must guess her name to win her. If they guess wrong, they're executed. This song is by an optimistic suitor who wants everyone to stay up all night and help him come up with the correct name. Nessun dorma means 'none shall sleep'. It seems that so many beautiful songs have such silly lyrics, they don't bother translating. Our imaginations work better for such songs.

@@monl28 uhm, no, actually, Nessun dorma is the opening song of the third act. In this the mysterious suitor Calaf has already won the contest, and since the princess doesn´t want to marry him, he offers her a way out of it by having her guess his name: she has time until the next dawn. But nobody seems to know who this guy is! So the princess orders that nobody that night shall sleep until they´ve found out who he is. He, meanwhile, sure of his victory, sings this song, saying that nobody will be able to guess his identity and therefore as soon as the sun rises he will win.

You have such a nice speaking voice you could be a light jazz or late night R&B love songs DJ.
Nessun Dorma was written by a conductor named Puccini who lived in the mid-late 1800s and into the early 1920s.
You were wise not to pause anywhere throughout the piece. It’s a masterpiece that deserves to be listened to without any interruptions. ❤️

I have a musician friend who played cello when Placido Domingo sang in La Traviata, an opera by Verdi. I asked him, after watching Freddie Mercury sing with Monserrat Caballe, if Freddie with lots of training could have made it in opera. He acknowledged Freddie's immense gifts, but opera is a whole other level. Basically, he said that if Freddie had started training when he was 10, and trained for 20 years, he might have been able to make it in the chorus.

One thing that's easy to forget in the flow of music is that this is also just as much an athletic performance as any Olympic gymnast. Every movement of the lips, tongue, jaw, neck, and body is deliberate and practiced for a lifetime. Each breath is planned and executed to fit the needs of the next phrase and is sometimes used to swell a note up or down. This isn't raw talent you're hearing. It's the result of years of learning and practice. Pavarotti sang like an F1 rider drives a motorcycle - flawless and so smooth it looks easy.

What always blows me away about Pavarotti is how anyone can tell, just from the first note, how brilliant his voice is.
Every single reaction video I've seen (and I'm slightly addicted to them) has had that "whoa" from the second he opens his mouth. Something about the power, beauty and control he will go on to show throughout the song is audible immediately, even if (like me) your ear is totally untrained. For him to start from such a high point, and then just keep escalating, is truly astonishing.

"No one sleeps" is what 'nessun dorma' means. Saw him live at the NYC Met Opera in 1994 in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. His acting was supreme, and his singing was out of this world. He was so magical, and it wasn't even him at his "peak". (Supposedly he was at his best in the late '70s and early '80s when there is very little film or recording evidence, unfortunately. There is some out there, though, and you should go listen to it. It will astound you.) Please watch the video of him singing 'Cesti La Giubba' from Pagliacci - "put on the vestments" (of a clown.) It is incredible, and available on UA-cam. His acting plus voice will break your heart, and the quality of the video is outstanding. The thing about Luciano as he got older - his soul and his life experiences seemed to leak into his voice (he lived life to its fullest and had many heartbreaks and challenges), and he literally could break hearts with his voice, even as fine-eared technical experts pooh-poohed a little, as his whole voice and persona gave way to a flood of recognizable humanity. At the end of Nessun Dorma, he sings "I will win. I will win. I will win." He sure did!!! Even if you don't want to do reviews of the videos I've suggested, I think you would truly enjoy viewing them (they aren't very long; arias are short because they are so demanding of the singer, and were composed to sing live) and it will help you understand the man and, perhaps more importantly - the music - at a deeper level. It was Pavarotti's passion to bring opera to the people, and it will enrich your life. I promise.

Over the years, I've listened to this masterpiece thousands of times, and each and every time brings tears, that's the truth. A bit of advice: take the time to read a brief synopsis of "Turandot", try to get the English words so you can understand his words, then you'll understand the meaning of the chorus, for example. I guarantee you won't be sorry. Love it so much will request it as my final aria at my funeral.

    in your cold room,
    watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,

You just experience the voice of the BEST opera singer in modern history. Period. Master Pavarotti makes you feel every inch of emotion every time. An opera song is called an "aria" and they are usually composse in italian because most compossers preffer it or where from Italy. Please don´t let it be your last opera reaction, it is an incredible world. Most reactor only make this one, but theres so much more, please keep the opera reactions as well as any other. I can recommend you by Luciano Pavaroti his version of "Vesti la Giuba", "La Donna e mobile" or "Ave Maria". And also the "Three Tenors" version of "O Sole Mio" that one is hilarius, and beatuful at the same time, and you have the best, Master Luciano Pavatori, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras sing this one aria. I hope you make them some day.

Yes, generally sung in the language written--Italian here--although in the past it wasn't uncommon to perform them in translation. Opera was an Italian art form first, so of course many of the most famous operas are in Italian. then then spread throughout Europe and more languages, including English.
Live performances now have supertitle translations of the words (the "libretto") overhead. I find it distracting from the performance on stage, though. I'd rather read a synopsis and then just sink into the experience of the sound and mastery.

    • @hamletksquid2702

I agree, having the lyrics onscreen doesn't help. Opera isn't about the words, it's about the sounds they make, and the lyrics tend not to be any sort of great literature. You don't need to know what "vincero" means to hear the triumph in Pavarotti's voice.

He is the hero, who sings "no one sleeps", and the last three words are victory, victory, victory. With the sunrise, he shall win her love. And he does.

I too think it cool that LP sang with quite a number of singers out of his genre. I've seen several of those and enjoyed them. I saw him with James Brown, wow, what a combination. They did JB's "It's a Man's World". Stunning! He also sang "Too Much Love Will Kill You" with Brian May. I think it is great that LP was willing to bring opera to the masses in a way we can relate to. No matter what he sings it becomes opera. He can't help it it is who he is and it's great. I would love to have seen Luciano Pavarotti sing with Freddie Mercury. Freddie loved the opera world, all the costumes, gorgeous music, and dramatics. What is not FM about that?
FM did sing a whole album with Monsaratt Caballe, famous Spanish opera star. Freddie admired her so much and loved the opportunity to sing with her. There are several videos of them singing songs from their album "Barcelona" available online. Check them out if you like goosebumps.

how is this so powerful that his voice tells me a story even in a language I can't understand? Goosebumps is exactly what happens. There is something about it that immerses itself in my subconscious mind and by-passes my reasoned thinking. That's a reason I'll never need to translate the words. They tell me the story anyway

Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian opera singer, considered by many to be the best ever. He died in 2007. Many operas are written in Italian as it’s considered to be the most beautiful language when sung, although I learned that in high school in the early 1970’s, and that perception might have changed.

"Nessun dorma" is an aria from the final act of the 1924 Giacomo Puccini's opera “Turandot” (Posthumously completed by Franco Alfano in 1926, and set to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. The libretto for Turandot was based on a 1762 play of the same name by Carlo Gozzi.) and one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. Any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. In the aria, Calaf expresses his triumphant assurance that he will win the princess.

The song is about a man that must go at dawn to duel for the woman he loves. He is vowing to her that he will win, no matter what.

    • @Erizedd
      @Erizedd 3 роки тому

That's not what it's about. It's about a cold Princess name Turandot (from the opera by the same name) who doesn't want to marry, so she sets a challenge that any man who wants her hand must answer three riddles correctly, but if he fails he'll be beheaded. Preceding this song, Luciano's character Calaf is the only one to answer all the riddles correctly, but even after that Turandot still doesn't want to marry him, so Calaf tells her that if she can discover his name before dawn, she can behead him, but if not, she must marry him. In this song Calaf sings about his assurance of his victory ('Vincero! Vincero!'), while the choir are all the Princess's servants that she sends out to try discover his name before the sun rises, knowing they will all be beheaded if they fail.

Please react to the song "Caruso" sung by Luciano Pavarotti. The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life.
Fun Fact: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.

I fell in love with Luciano Pavarotti over 40 years ago and have been addicted to opera ever since. The English lyrics to this song are beautiful, I trust you have looked them up by now. This is the 2nd concert with the 3 Tenors, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Pavarotti. The first concert they performed together was at Caracalla, and ancient ruin in Rome, whereby chance they sang under a full moon. Now I'm a diehard opera fan and have been fortunate enough to attend many performances in Seattle. I recommend starting with more lighthearted operas like The Barber of Seville, The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, then go on to Carmen, LaTraviata, Madame Butterfly, etc., and they all come with English subtitles on a screen above the stage. ENJOY

I have just discovered your channel, and I am so glad I did. For the past two hours I was going through your reactions, and I love your sincerity and unpretentiousness. I love the bands you covered so far, but I am also a great opera fan. I was both excited and surprised to see you reacted to Pavarotti, since I wasn't expecting it, at all :) Your love for music is so wonderful and time after time I enjoy listening to you and your ability to transfer what you're experiencing while listening. I have watched dozens of reaction videos to opera, and I am confident saying that there are a handful of you who spontaneously mentioned the composer and musicians. Dear Jarrett, you are a real deal!
I was certain I will give you a suggestion for the next reaction from the pool of rock, hard rock stuff, but since you entered the opera dimension and Pavarotti waters... There is only one more video I would appreciate you watching, either privately or by sharing your reaction with us. The aria is short, and it beautifully invites you to the opera world and the emotion this world offers. The performance is live with English translation, and Pavarotti is simply unreal. ua-cam.com/video/ZzUJ8Hf0hm4/v-deo.html
    Cheers

The high note that Pavarotti hits in Nessun Dorma is a B5. What that means is that he is hitting a B note that is 5 octaves above a normal B. Sometimes it's referred to as a B4. That's because tenor octaves are usually notated an octave above normal. So a B4 (4 octaves above B) becomes B5 for a tenor voice.

    Italian Text
    Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
    Tu pure, o, Principessa,
    nella tua fredda stanza,
    guardi le stelle
    che tremano d'amore
    e di speranza.
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,
    il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
    quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
    che ti fa mia!
    (Il nome suo nessun saprà!...
    e noi dovrem, ahime, morir!)
    Dilegua, o notte!
    Tramontate, stelle!
    Tramontate, stelle!
    All'alba vincerò!
    vincerò, vincerò!
    English Translation
    Nobody shall sleep!...
    Nobody shall sleep!
    Even you, oh Princess,
    in your cold room,
    watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
my name no one shall know...
    No!...No!...
On your mouth, I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!...
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
    Vanish, o night!
    Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

Ciao. the opera was born in Italy, therefore it cannot be translated into other languages. opera singers from all over the world sing in Italian. the public (including the Italians) is given a "libretto" with the complete text of the opera, this is because the lyrics follow the melody and therefore the words sometimes become incomprehensible even to the Italians. The liric opera was born in Florence at the end of the 16th century. the aria that Pavarotti sang was written by Giacomo Puccini.
Nessun Dorma is a famous romance for tenor from Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot. Considered one of the greatest romances in the history of music, it is intoned by the character of the Tartar prince Calaf at the beginning of the third and last act of the opera.
