This is such a great episode! If I may distill is down for others in the comments here:
    Listen Actively and Often
    Context: Deep listening builds musicianship.
Benefits: Listening to master musicians internalizes their styles.
Actionable Steps: Dedicate a weekly listening session to one genre or artist. Take notes on rhythms, phrasing, and dynamic changes.
Tools: Transcribe solos by slowing down tracks to discern each note.
Long-Term Habit: Listen to different jazz styles, from bebop to contemporary, to find new elements to incorporate into your playing.
    Consistent Daily Practice
Context: Practicing regularly enhances muscle memory.
Routine Establishment: Create a calendar to allocate time for technical exercises, repertoire, and creative exploration.
Focus Areas: Mix warm-up scales with challenging jazz pieces to balance improvement and enjoyment.
Balance: Dedicate part of the practice to sight-reading, another to technique, and a third to composition or improvisation.
Tracking Progress: Record each session and review recordings to highlight progress and areas needing improvement.
    Tackle Challenging Material
Context: Growth comes from pushing limits.
Approach: Play challenging sections first when energy is high.
Examples: Work on advanced chord progressions or intricate syncopation.
Feedback Loop: Compare recorded attempts to professional performances to find improvement opportunities.
Support: Share progress with a mentor for advice on tackling challenging pieces.
    Simulate Performance Scenarios
    Context: Practice performances reduce anxiety.
Preparation: Schedule mock concerts to acclimate to pressure.
Environment: Practice in front of familiar listeners.
Visualization: Imagine performing in front of a large audience while practicing solo.
Review and Adjust: Identify specific issues in recordings and adapt your playing.
    Seek Guidance from Mentors
    Context: Mentors provide unique insights.
Finding Mentors: Approach experts through workshops and private lessons.
Community Engagement: Participate in jam sessions and online forums.
Diverse Perspectives: Alternate between mentors specializing in different jazz styles to build a broad skill set.
Feedback Application: Implement mentor advice into a practice plan and track progress.
    Document Progress and Set Goals
    Context: Progress documentation boosts motivation.
Journaling: Record your progress and any challenges faced during practice.
Recording: Revisit old recordings to track progress.
Goal Setting: Set goals like “learn five new voicings this week” and build toward long-term milestones.
Reflection: Review goals regularly to adjust and refine your strategy.
    Enjoy the Process
    Context: Passion sustains improvement.
Mindfulness: Savor each practice moment and focus on enjoying the journey.
Balance: Alternate between strict drills and creative improvisation.
Community Connection: Play duets or join a band to share the joy of music-making.
Celebration: Reward yourself after learning new songs or techniques to stay motivated.

Hey folks, I've been following this for a minute and it's working. Numbers 1, 3, 4, and 6. I've always listened to jazz music but now it more intentional. Practicing everyday is the goal but sometimes life takes over. Finding a teacher is a challenge for now. Keeping a journal thanks to you guys. Recording myself? Not a problem. The recordings don't lie.

Enjoying the process is one thing that I've learned even better since I began dabbling in the visual arts again. Although I've always been aware of it playing music, doing art again I'm not as interested in the end result as the process of DOING IT. It's spilled over into my daily guitar practice.

This is mostly a note to myself, but if it works for other folks, good deal!
Play along with recordings for a disgusting amount of your practice time. Listen closely to single lines as opposed to Harmony because lines are what the harmony is made from.
