Oh yes Spice, we had to sit down and clean the bush. We rub lime on our fingers so our fingers didn’t get stain. The leaves are old. Back home we got the young leaves. Spice girl that is a lot of food. We put the dumpling last. I was taught. The only reason we did that. My mother said it didn’t take long to cook. Spice, I love how you cook. People do things differently and same results. Also, a great cook is when you have a sweet hand. You ever heard that Spice. Do not acknowledge people who are ignorant. Spice, that is great callaloo soup. I would probably use chicken feet or no meat at all. Thanks for sharing👍🏽💯💕
Awww, thank you Emily! I have yet to learn how to cook small lol. I always cook enough to feed everyone, and call ppl to come get food. Im my grandmother's child. She took care of everyone. We always had enough. I still have the old habits lol..... that soup can also be enjoyed with saltfish , shrimp, and crab. I cooked it before using shrimp and crab. It was soooo good. Everyone enjoyed and said I have to make it again lol. Thanks always for your support 🤗🤗
@@hazelaustin6010 thank you so much. It was soooo good that I have to make another pot. This time however, I'll add crab and shrimp. I made it with shrimp before. Soooo yummy! Thank you for watching 😘😘
i saw a video of a professional native Caribbean chef say his momma also stripped the outer part off the stalk during the cleaning process but he does not do that he said, but he did recognized the tradition from his own momma that the stalk was peeled lol. so there is the best answer you're gonna get 00:43 it would seem to be a tradition that generations of late, even professional chefs whom are aware of the tradiation forgo it, mainly to skip a labor step that doesn't seem to effect outcome
Hahaha, it seems there's been an equal mix of those who do and those who do not, as long as it doesn't affect the soup in any way, I'll have to say it's about preference lol. Thank you for sharing, and for watching 👍🏾😊
that's how we clean callaloo but our callaloo is different. We just call that dasheen leaves as it is never seen anyone here cook that one. Would love to give it a try one day
We use to clean the outta sting when I was young. If you get the very young curly leaves its not necessary to strip. I wash n cut up everything the taste is no different
I'm sure nutrients are being lost in throwing out that layer, but I think it's about the way in which we were taught to clean it. Some people were taught to leave it on, and some were taught to remove it. In this day and age, people do what pleases them, and there's nothing wrong with that. Thanks for sharing!
Dasheen leaves is what I grew up knowing as callaloo. Different islands have their own version of it. I've had another kind as well and it was delicious. Thank you for watching!
I AM NEW TO THIS BUT I AM A CHEF AND SOAK THE CALALOU IN WATER AND VINEGAR TO GET OUT ALL THE DEBRIS AND IF SPRAYED THEN WASH AND CUT THE STEM FROM THE LEAVES
Yes I realize many people don't strip the stalk for several reasons, and it does not affect the taste whether or not it's done. I guess it's safe to say it's a matter of preference. Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I did that But these days i just use the leaves Most of the nutrients in the leaves anyway I dont EVER blend calaloo Slow cook it with little water and oil Until it swizzles down completely Without a swizzle stick Experience the full flavour of the calaloo leaves Try it!!
I already did. I recently made callaloo and cooked it down. It turned out nicely. Towards the end, I use a swizzle stick just to say I had the opportunity to use it because I bought it over a year ago and never used it. When I cook, I try different methods depending on what I'm cooking. Growing up, my family never used a blender. It was always cooked down, then swizzled. Thanks for watching!
Everyone has his own type. I'm sure you're learning that today. This is what mine is and will always be . I've also had from other countries, and equally delicious, nutritious, and accepted. Thank you!!

No coconut milk?
You can use coconut milk if you choose to, but I chose to use coconut cream because it was what I had. The flavor was the same. Thanks for watching!

Wow....This looks great. Thank you for the tip about wearing gloves to clean the leaves 😉
You're welcome! Thank you for watching 😊😊
If you get the middle leaves you don't have to strip it because it is the younger leaves
Wowww, I didn't know that. Thanks for watching and sharing 👏🏽!

You never boiled the callaloo?
The callaloo was cooked after blending
Yes but d flavour comes out better when the calaloo are swindled down on the stove first
Not blended first
Come to St vincent and get your calaloo soup
That doesn't look like the callaloo I know..but I like the way you prepared it.
Dasheen leaves is what I grew up knowing as callaloo. Different islands have their own version of it. I've had another kind as well and it was delicious. Thank you for watching!
Yes, that’s how you clean the stalk in Asia
@sreejayabhattacharjeegodfr3323 thank you, and thanks for watching!
You wash the stalks. If it is rich in iron, you throwing out the nutrients. If you keep getting old eaves then you'll get a 'tuff' bush
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I AM NEW TO THIS BUT I AM A CHEF AND SOAK THE CALALOU IN WATER AND VINEGAR TO GET OUT ALL THE DEBRIS AND IF SPRAYED THEN
WASH AND CUT THE STEM FROM THE LEAVES

#11👍🏽
That's how I knew to prepare it ny removing the skin. In this modern time they no longer remove it. Just was and cut up
I'm glad I'm not alone lol! I would think in this modern day they dont have the time for the extra work 🤣. Thank you for watching!
Calaloo is different from dasheen
Yes it is!
Callaloo bush is the stem and leaves from the dasheen tuber, same plant
I used to clean it I stop years and years ago because you are trowing away the best part that has the iron in it and it has been the same .
Yes I realize many people don't strip the stalk for several reasons, and it does not affect the taste whether or not it's done. I guess it's safe to say it's a matter of preference. Thank you, and thanks for watching!

THAT IS BECAUSE THE KEAD IS HARD - TRY GETTING YOUNG LEAVES'
THAT SHOULD BE LEAF AND NOT KEAD
