I used a long vascular clamp with electrical tape around the ends to soften the edges of the tips that would contact the belt. The clamping pressure was low enough that I was not concerned about damaging the belts and it was like having an extra hand down in there where there was so little room for my large hands.
To hold small screws to a screwdriver use a piece of blue tack
I just did the same mod a few days ago. Well done! I had trouble getting the motor installed, getting past the belt.
Well done - it gets really fiddly at times. I was mucking about for a while with two long pairs of forceps. Then I dropped a screw. Magnets help!

Oh, I like that idea! You can see from the video that even with the long forceps it was quite a fiddly bit.
