(Judy VanderPloeg) I used to change furniture around all the time. One time I moved furniture and my husband came home after his shift at work. He didn't turn on the light, so he wouldn't wake me and sat where he thought his chair was. The 'thud' when he hit the floor in the space where his chair used to be, was what woke me up. I really like that you give your kids agency over their belongings. They will have a great sense of responsibility and great respect for things as they grow. BTW, the room looks very cozy.
I’m always swapping rooms around, my husband always says he never knows where things are going to be when he comes home :) I like using what we have to change a space rather than keep buying things x
I have the same wooden train tracks in my kindergarten classroom. I was able to get a few sets of them at garage sales. They are by far one of my student's favorite toys. I love how your kids have so many open ended toys. Many of my students enter school not knowing how to play creatively, because they spend their free time at home on screens. They quickly see that blocks, trains, marble runs, Duplos etc... are more fun than tablets. Keep them playing as long as you can!
My grandma will change my bed and reposition other stuff when I’m not home because she knows she shouldn’t do it. She also deep cleans my room again, when I’m not around lol. However, I do appreciate it and love a layout change! And good clean sheets are my favorite
You said that the kids have a hard time putting things back in the correct bin. Cas says that nearly all kids are butterflies, and in a previous video you said you were, too. Like ladybugs, butterflies (as you know) generally (especially for kids) can't be bothered to take off and replace a lid in order to put something away, and so would much rather, and do tend to, put something down instead of put it away if there's a lid to be dealt with, so to makes perfect sense that the kids would just stick things in whatever bin is closest. Might be worth a try to take the lids off (would mean unstacking bins that are on top of each other) so that literally all the kids have to do is drop them in the correct bin and be done with it. Labels might also be really helpful for them (or if other kids are helping put the toys away as well) because while the bins are clear so what's inside can still be seen, if the bins are ever empty, it can be a lot harder to put their contents back in them, even if they don't realize it. I know having a lid on a bin helps kids gauge better when there's too much stuff in the bin (lid won't go back on), but it might be worth it at least to try out having no lids and see if that helps them put things away in their correct bins.
Try moving the pretty cabinet & piano to the other side of the room under the photo frames so that you look at the pretty cabinet when you're sitting on the couch. Move the couch a little closer to the window. Move the not pretty to look at toy shelf behind the couch against the banister. Eventually, if you switch out the plastic bins for something more uniform, that shelf will feel better.
I love seeing you decluttering and cleaning this room again three months later. It helps remind me that this is normal for most of us, we're not "fringe people" with unacceptable thinking patterns. Life happens. The process works. Seeing you process your clutter, especially with children, helps me process mine, staying solution focused.
When my kids were young,a long time ago, we would talk about rearranging their bedrooms. They loved planning their rooms, and were much better at it than I was. Now all three are married and their homes do reflect their personalities, it’s so fun to visit them. Great job ,Erica
As someone who loves to organise, can I suggest you label those toy bins? I have found labels (word plus picture of whatever is in the bin) to really help keep organization systems in place. Also, keeping the lids off the bins will make it easier for the kids to put the toys away 😊. Very inspiring video, need to get to my living area now!
absolutely a pic or labels. kids are clearly in habit of picking up now --- seous accomplishments. lables will not solve the problem completely , but will reduce the muddle.
I am a mama a grandma and was an elementary teacher. I admire the way you are raising your children and your sweet manner with them. Little superman is soo cute. And your older children are adorable too.
We not only change furniture placement often within rooms, we also change the purpose of rooms multiple times, to reflect changes in our activities. When we started extensive indoor gardening, the basement got a total makeover; our offices moved throughout the house multiple times; the piano has pretty much lived anywhere; the toys move as our grandkids grow; we change who sleeps where; we made several big changes to accommodate the arrival of pets. Only the bathrooms and kitchen seem to stay where they are 😂
I am with you on rearranging rooms. Every three months it seems I need change. Loved this video and watching your kids help. You are doing a great job.👍👍👏👏
I love watching ppl refresh rooms but I HATE constantly moving things around the house. I will move until I have it perfect, but once I have it, I never want to touch it again 😊 I am a done and don't touch it (except to clean) kind of girl! But I don't do ANY holiday decor for this reason, so I may be the odd one. 😳
I have zero holiday decor (no Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, or Christmas) and also zero seasonal decor - mainly I hate having things on the walls and flat surfaces (the few things I do have on those surfaces are curated with the utmost care and arranged to the point of absolute perfection, so I hate when something gets moved from its spot), and I'm always gone for 3-4 weeks at Christmas anyway, so I would never see the Christmas stuff in the first place, and there is absolutely no room in my house for a tree - of any size (because I need the open floor space for wheelchair maneuverability, and there are other things that live in the only corner of the living room because there's nowhere else to keep them due to the wall outlet placement) - and my parents always put one up, anyway, so I get to appreciate that one instead (I always stay with my parents for Christmas). I like to move furniture once and be done with it, too, and only move things again if something's not functioning the way I need it to.
I LOVE changing around furniture. Hubby and I even take pieces from other rooms. Makes everything feel new and fresh without spending a dime. Great video!
We are minimal with our space - 1100 square feet/102 square meters (condo for my husband, myself and 2 teenage boys + canine so I don't like to store a lot of seasonal décor but a pop of fresh blooms is always lovely. Enjoyed the process you went through and good not to rush and make it stressful.
What I really love about you is how you let your family members make their decisions what to keep, what to declutter… I wish I could be more like you. I always find myself giving my opinion UGH! Even with Andy when you were down to sentimental you always respected his choices… Great job Erica, the room looks great, love the springtime touches…I put your cordless vacuume on my Amazon wish list, I am going to save for it😀 been thinking of getting one, but also, didn’t want to spend that much on a dyson
With my empty nest when kids visit and hear “ I’d just like to move the…” the teasing begins. So yes absolutely I move things to freshen things up and make space for open grandkid play.
Totally agree with rearranging rooms. When I get the itch to redecorate or buy things I think I need but don’t, I rearrange furniture and decor to refresh my view and I usually feel so much better and don’t feel the need to impulse shop for stuff anymore!
I purchased a cordless from Amazon last year and I love it! My house is 100 years old and small so maneuvering and finding an outlet is time consuming and tireless. The cordless gives me so much more freedom and it’s easier to clean more frequently and like you I can do my whole house quickly! I have stairs and the cordless is a game changer.
I enjoy rearranging my spaces and “shopping” my house to use things in different areas for a new look. I really like where you moved your couch to. It opened up the area nicely.
I wish my husband would not freak out over room changes…🤦🏻♀️❤️. So I make little changes. I like how you changed the room!! Much nicer! Go Erica and kids!!
I like what you did with your couch and creating a little reading nook area. That looks really nice. When I was young and still living with my parents, I loved rearranging my bedroom. Now that I'm older, we live in a small house with 2 teenagers and 3 cats, 1 kitty is blind, so we can't really move the furniture around too much. Kitty needs things to pretty much stay the same, so when he's barreling through the house chasing our other cats, he doesn't crash unexpectedly into something. In a way, it's taught my kids to pick up after ourselves and keep the walking areas clear for our cat.
Love your videos! My favorite part is hearing your rationale behind decisions, especially when you come across the harder decisions in front of us. So helpful! Thanks for sharing!
I really like how you arranged your family room. I think you should put the white cabinet that is behind the sofa and move it to where you have the gallery wall. And move the shelf unit with all the kids toys behind the sofa, that way the toys are out of sight and the kids can put them away back there. But that why cabinet shouldn’t be hidden, it is lovely and you should display it. Maybe you can put family pictures on it.
Wow! You and your kiddos did a great job! I’m still mired down with too much stuff but a clean, fresh and beautiful living room is my goal. Thanks for the inspiration 😊
I find dusting every single weekend helps to keep the clutter put away and stay decluttered. Since becoming a minimalist I have discovered I love to dust when I use to dread it when I had more belongings. Decluttering to me helps make everything easier!
I rarely rearrange my rooms but that’s just because of limited arrangements. I love the little reading/play nook you made for the kiddos. Great job to you and the kids! Room looks great!
Erica, if you use the zone cleaning schedule outlined by the Fly Lady, you won’t have these giant cleaning days. The beauty of the system is that you get to customize it for your home and schedule.
Wondering why the dominos and Jenga are not kept on your games shelves in the dinning room? I have an old dresser in our living room where we keep all of our games. We do not keep any toys in common areas. My older girls have their dolls and accessories and a shelf each for books in their room. And my you get two (boy and girl) have a 9-cube shelf that houses 3 cubes of books and 6 cubes of toy categories (tea party/doll, magna tiles, Duplos, cars/animals, and train + accessories). Legos are kept in a very large closet we have. Those are the only toys in our home. 👍🏻
@@EricaLucasLoves Mine, too. Two sets of Jenga. Never played. Ended up as building blocks, farm fences or horse jumps. Combined with Schleich horse stables, Playmobil farms, even Legos.
Ever since I was a tween I changed my room around monthly and I inadvertently became a professional stuff shuffler. Getting out of that habit is still work. I love your real life videos Erica 💞😊🌟
I have been with you on this journey since your first video and I am always so impressed with the gentle way you coax your family to participate in your minimalist lifestyle.
Looks great! I like to more stuff around too. My husband says I rearrange so often that I'm keeping his brain young and vibrant having to learn new systems 😆
I used to move furniture around when I was younger though most of the time I would rearrange it back the next time. In my current house I keep most of the furniture in the same place except for the Grandkids’ toy room. I move stuff around to see if a new position will cause toys to be played with again and sometimes it will. If I try a toy in a couple different areas and they still don’t pick it up then I know it is donate time. I usually ask the Grandkids before I donate something but if it is a small toy like from a Happy Meal or Dollar Tree and they haven’t touched it after the day it came in then out it goes. My Granddaughter has a Happy Meal Barbie toy that now, years later, she still gets out every time she comes over so that one is a win!
21:57 can't make you feel better about moving furniture. 😆 That has never beeny thing! Once I've set a room up it stays unless there is a real functionality problem and requires a change.
Hi Erica! I love the new look of your family room…you all did a great job. I love how you allow time for these organizing projects. Too often we try to cram a 3-hour-job in one hour and everyone gets frustrated. I also love how the kids are involved in the decisions on what toys to keep. I watch all your videos and look forward to them every week. I also wanted to express my condolences to you and your entire family. ❤️
Your kids' lives must have changed so much since you started this journey. What started as a personal project ended up beneficial for the whole family ❤️
The seems on the two lampshades is bugging me! Lol I Love doing seasonal room refreshes!!! We live in a small apt so I can’t really move the furniture but I do it with smaller things and definitely a good clean always makes it’s better! 😁
That is a big job, Erica. It turned out great. I have to say that you are extremely normal moving furniture around because I love doing that too. Haha It gives me a different feel for a room which is rejuvenating, I think.
I have mentioned before that I paid someone to declutter my house to a point. It is still not perfect but 100% more liveable. I moved all the furniture around in every room on the first floor after that was done. When my husband and I were in the early years of our marriage, we often spent every Labor Day weekend moving furniture and rearranging it to suit a new school year as we are both teachers. The advantage to having the train set behind the couch is that people can still get to the couch without the train set in the way. So, if you were to let them keep it out overnight, it would still be tucked away.
Erica, I think the desire to rearrange a room comes with the military mindset. As a former Army brat of 22 years, and now stationary adult for the last 18 years, I have found a refresh in changing things around about every 3 or so years is almost a necessity. I think it is just how we are wired. And because I am like that, I'm going to say yes...totally normal...at least for us. Lol
As a complete book addict, I found trying to get every book I wanted to read in ebook format. It takes up way less space and weight. I moved recently and literally gave away hundreds of books because I have the ones I will reread in ebook format. Or they are available from the library as ebooks. I still have hard copy books - mostly visual books (photographs, etc) or books I cannot get as ebooks such as antique books. It has changed my life without depriving me of my addiction. In the past I changed my rooms around frequently, even though they were pretty small and didn’t offer a lot of options. Now that I am older, I don’t because it is just too big a hassle, not to mention harder to do.
Hi there sweetie pie hope you are well I just take one day at time great job with your decluttering and cleaning great to see your family helping out Mom love from Eugenie your friend Happy Easter to you and your family xxx💖💚💤
I love to rearrange furniture. My sister and I would rearrange our bedroom 2-3 times a year. Now I don't rearrange as often because the furniture in our home is heavier. I did just move our bedroom furniture around last week and I'm still sore. The living room gets rearranged every year at Christmas to accommodate the Christmas tree.
You are not alone in moving around your living room, we have done this many times. More so when the kids were younger and we had toys, etc in the room. It is nice to refresh a space, love the spring flowers.
Hey Erica! Such a satisfying video to watch. Job well done! Have you ever considered moving both desks behind the couch now that the couch is more in the center of the room? They could act as a sofa table and a desk. Put a lamp on each desk (makes it feel really cozy at night). Have you ever seen that done? It's Kinda neat. Try it and see. Leslie
I change the furniture arrangement all the time Erica. I love it it’s like afresh start and let’s different parts of the room breathe for a while 🤓🇬🇧💖👍🏼
I love my cordless vacuum! We went cordless last year and it was amazing. I wanted to be able to vacuum quick and easy when we had baby #2; I was about 34 weeks pregnant at that time. My 2 year old can also vacuum with it too because it’s adjustable to make it her size.
Erica, I love your videos! I also like to rearrange rooms, but I have very limited space. We plan on buying or building our forever home, of which I am so exited about. 😁
I’m a relentless re-organizer/re-arranger! I love to move things, deep clean, and try new layouts several times a year. It’s so satisfying. The room looks great!
I've watched your videos from Day 1 - that school room in your basement! Oh, my! I'm definitely a minimalish minimalist! Thanks for the inspiration. 🤗
Thank you for being here!!! Have a wonderful week!!
Moving the couch forward towards the TV is much more cosy

I watch all your videos and look forward to them every week. I also wanted to express my condolences to you and your entire family. ❤️
Your kids' lives must have changed so much since you started this journey. What started as a personal project ended up beneficial for the whole family ❤️
The seems on the two lampshades is bugging me! Lol
I Love doing seasonal room refreshes!!! We live in a small apt so I can’t really move the furniture but I do it with smaller things and definitely a good clean always makes it’s better! 😁
I love changing furniture around!
I love changing around my furniture too.
That is a big job, Erica.
It turned out great.
I have to say that you are extremely normal moving furniture around because I love doing that too. Haha
It gives me a different feel for a room which is rejuvenating, I think.
Love your reading corner 💕
I have mentioned before that I paid someone to declutter my house to a point. It is still not perfect but 100% more liveable. I moved all the furniture around in every room on the first floor after that was done. When my husband and I were in the early years of our marriage, we often spent every Labor Day weekend moving furniture and rearranging it to suit a new school year as we are both teachers.
The advantage to having the train set behind the couch is that people can still get to the couch without the train set in the way. So, if you were to let them keep it out overnight, it would still be tucked away.
The kids did such a great job!
love the way your rearranged the room! looks great!
Lol
Yes 🙌 Army brat here that married Air Force! I have to move things around all the time. I think it somehow got ingrained into me over the years 🤷♀️
As a complete book addict, I found trying to get every book I wanted to read in ebook format.
I'm so glad you moved the couch. If you hadn't, I was going to suggest it. 🙂
Hi there sweetie pie hope you are well I just take one day at time great job with your decluttering and cleaning great to see your family helping out Mom love from Eugenie your friend Happy Easter to you and your family xxx💖💚💤
Good Job 👌 your videos are always inspiring and relaxing for me! Big hug and greetings from Austria, Maria ✨🌷💞
Love changing things up, especially if they don't work!
Looks great, nice and clean. one thing the lamp on your grandmother's table please put the lamp shade line toward the wall. other wise Amazing....
I like the sectional placement. Good job
I used to clean houses, "they" always say to clean top to bottom in a room? I dust before I sweep and vacuum! But as long as it gets done, lol!
Looks fab! Just turn around the seam on the lamp shade by the chair
Great job, Erica and loved your new arrangement. Thanks for sharing and for your inspiration. Love your videos! :) x
I love to change up rooms and things.
I love getting the kids involved with the cleaning! What a great way to teach sorting, colors, shapes, responsibility and charity! You rock!
Great video! I really look forward to them and love that you get your kids involved. I gotta say, that dog is a horse!!
You are not alone in moving around your living room, we have done this many times. More so when the kids were younger and we had toys, etc in the room. It is nice to refresh a space, love the spring flowers.
Love your point about all the space to play!
I love the reading nook !
I love to change furniture. It makes things feel clean, fresh and new for zero dollars. It all looks wonderful. Cozy and inviting.
I’m a relentless re-organizer/re-arranger! I love to move things, deep clean, and try new layouts several times a year. It’s so satisfying. The room looks great!
Looks really nice now. I always wanted you to move your couch closer to the fireplace; too many people put up their furniture against the walls.
