Woah, it had to be a thrilling experience to be next to him and chat with him. In other Hawking's appearances you don't realize how long it took him to compose a sentence, while this video, being uncut, made it very evident.
Interacting with a person affected by ALS is so shocking and fascinating at the same time, a very unique experience. Let alone with Prof. Hawking.
He may be gone now, but his sensational discoveries and theories will keep lighting up the World forever. RIP.

Nah, he was smiling to say yes she could hug him. It probably feels nice because he's used to only being touched when he's being taken care of like bathing, shaving, dressing and so forth. It's different from something affectionate, like holding hands or hugging. I bet people who don't take care of him every day are afraid to touch him and hurt him because he looks so fragile, but he's not glass. He got bounced around in zero G's and said it was fun.

He is a truly inspirational man, his story i still find amazing and touching. By watching many videos i have learnt he has a great sense of humor and that's one of the biggest things I love about him. His smile just brings me joy, I don't know if i know how, but it just does. :)

When he is gone, all those beautiful quotes will be wrote down and remembered. But who would want to be remembered as a quote generator and not a loving father and husband, good friend, hard-working scientist. Maybe what I feel is not even remotely close to reality, probably, even if true, that wouldn't bother him, but I think for many Mr. Hawking is just that smart guy on a wheel chair with robotic voice. People see achievements of a great scientist, but not scientist himself.

Well that was awkward and underwhelming. Although I guess it is tiring for him to write anything substantial given his condition and the fact that it looks like he was answering questions from many different people.
He usually gets the interview questions before hand so he has time to type up his response. Clearly it wasn't the the case with this question.

The issue is, like every other 71 year old I know, he hasn't upgraded his software or hardware in a decade or more, so he sounds like a computer from the year 1999. There is no reason for him to waste so much of your time, all the time, except because he can. I went to a pre-planned speech of his, and that's all it was, long-pause after long-pause. I'll read him in print.
I remember reading somewhere that the system he uses today is the same one that he has been using since the 80s. He has a sentimental attachment to it, which is understandable given that it is the machine that gives him his voice. I probably would have upgraded it if I were him but I can sympathize with his reasons. It's not like he owes anyone his words.
How was it awkward? He was responding. Nothing awkward. Maybe you felt awkward because you automatically assume silence is uncomfortable.
sidjtd No, it wasn't the silence that was awkward. I am definitely not a person who finds silence uncomfortable as I have a laconic speaking style myself.
It's the whole atmosphere, her enamoration with Hawking, and the response itself which all came across as odd to me. There is no single element that I can point to and say "that's what made it weird." The whole thing just felt a little off.
So I can't really answer your question. Either you notice it or your don't. It's also possible that it's all in my head.

Don’t ever compare Hawking with Maxwell and Einstein .He isn’t of that level .
I wouldn’t even keep him in par with Steven Weinberg, Edward Witten or John Von Neumann .

Maybe many past and present great minds had a "condition" as well but lived in a time when we had solutions for them. Something as simple as antibiotics for Ramanujan or Abel could have take humanity into places that we can't even imagine. At least Hawking is still alive and can still share his knowledge with us.
