My craftroom is a HOT MESS! hahahah I can NEVER keep it together. I clean and it looks like a TORNADO went through it after a couple of visits. Geez! I need to get it together. hahahahaha --- Honestly, the only way it stays clean is when I am not in it. hahahaha

Hi, Simon! My Dad would have loved you. His machine shop was so clean; you could practically eat off the of the floor and everything had it's place.
I don't have a craft room. I usually have a craft lap or maybe a tv tray. :) What I like to do is get storage from the Dollar Tree. They have great bins in bright colors that are hard for me to use.
      Cheers!

One additional helpful hint.... small dies and stamps can get lost easily so as I finish with them while crafting, I place them in a small plastic cup. Then when I’m done, they are all together instead of buried under scraps.

    • @dagmarriley2923
      @dagmarriley2923 5 років тому +2

Karen Ferraro I also use a magnet sheet on my desk to keep the dies from wondering off if I don’t put them up right away. The magnetic sheets can be found just about anywhere but I get mine from Stamp-n-Storage since they are very sturdy and they often have sales on them. If money is a big issue, you can always go to your local hardware store and pick up a cover that is used over the Register (AC/Heat) they are magnetic as well and cost very little and use it like it is or adhere it onto a sturdy piece of Card stock to make it look less flimsy.

Holy cow, I'm stunned by the AMOUNT of product you have!😲
Looks like whatever item you have, you have EVERY color.
But obviously the space available is going to dictate the amount of stuff you have. I don't have much space so I have to be mindful of how much I buy.
How wonderful to have so much room for crafting supplies!☺️👍🏻
    Thanks for all your tips.

Since so many towns have recycling centers, I'm adding my comment to suggest you also have a paper recycling box next to the trash can. It's easy to put big and little bits of paper in and definitely good for the environment!

Awesome, do the same method, in my sewing room and craft room. The hand held vacuum is the same one I have used over a year. It is the best, and it looks awesome too. This method works, have done this in my nail salon as well for over 30 years, if you choose this methodology you will never go back. Like sorting out laundry, will use even at home for cleaning. The stamp method for cleaning is great. I use the lawn fawn shammy too. Thank you for showing the real craft room. RESPECT!

First of all, THANK YOU for the disclosure. I thought I was the only one whose crafting surface blows up when I'm making art. Seriously, my available work surface shrinks to the size of a dinner plate when I'm making something. Then when I'm done, I have to "get back to zero" so I'm inspired enough to create something else. Great video!

Wonderful wonderful tips!! Especially cleaning the stamps at the end! I spend so much time scrubbing each stamp after it’s use & putting it back on the sheet. If I’m not using it with another color, waiting til the end makes sense. It’s not going to hurt the stamp at all. Thanks Simon!

Great tips Simon. My approach has been to let the Tidy-up Elves clean my craft room overnight while I sleep. So far that hasn't worked, not even once! When I'm scrapbooking, I like to have a medium sized plastic container on my desk close at hand for the tiny bits of garbage. Maybe that would help you too, and then it's right there for snips and tape peels etc.

My craft room is the dining area of our kitchen. It was a disorganized mess. I spent several weekends organising it and now it is do easy to start a project and clean up when I'm finished for the day. I have a little bin that I keep my scissors, adhesives and other tools in. Sometimes I just put my whole project fixins in a box because I know I'll be working on it again soon. I love your videos!!

Thank you for your tips and tour. Having a home for everything really is the key.
I have been doing a make-over on my room which started from moving from one, smaller, room in our house into a significantly larger one (swapped with the never finished guest room that was becoming too much of a forget about it storage room). I've gone with shelving and boxes rather than drawer units because I am a lot more likely to use and tidy things that are visible than if I hide things away in drawers. If I see it, it reminds me to do something with it. The plus side to that, rail bracket and board shelving with Ikea boxes are a lot cheaper for my immense stash of multiple crafts and stuff. I'm still working out the ideal homes for everything and just added the last wall shelving at the beginning of the month., but I am getting there. I still need to get a hand vac or rather to convince my sweetie I need a hand vac vs just using the full-size. I also really want to re-do the floor and take out the carpet, but that's next year's budget, I think. Because all my shelving is wall-mounted, though, there won't be as much to take out of the room to re-do the floor.

Really loving the format of your video with the various cameras etc. It's really creative. I'm right there with you in keeping things in bins so that they are easy to transport. A couple things I do is I have a magnetic metal bowl (you can find them in the hardware dept for holding nails, etc) and I plunk metal dies in there when I'm done with them. I also have a wire bin that I can just put materials in as I go along and then sort through and put away at the end of my project.

Thank you for this. I agree; every thing needs a home. My problem is making space for those homes. Finding ways to go vertical can solve that. I think the main difference between kitchens and craft/sewing rooms is kitchens typically have homes for every kitchen thing. I just love that drawer unit. Oh and a little LoL, I was working while playing your video, so my focus wasn't 100%. I thought I heard "alcoholics" a few times when you really were saying "alcohol inks." Simon, although I no longer make cards or do paper craft, I make jewellery and I've been reorganising my craft room recently. I'm still in the process and I came to the same conclusion you mentioned in your video -- it's important to have a place for everything! My craft room got out of hand because I was buying too many supplies at once and I didn't know where to put things, so stuff started piling up and getting hidden or buried. I'm still fairly new at my craft (started about 4 years ago and learning from UA-cam tutorials as I go along) so I keep getting lots of beads to build up my stash.
Plus, recently I finally discovered that I prefer a certain beading technique more than the others, and that also necessitated changing how I organise my beads because I used to organise them by colour, but now need to organise them by size as the technique I prefer requires specific sizes for various designs! I've spent so much on storage containers and boxes to keep all the small beads safely separated into individual compartments... like you said, it's an investment and it just cannot be helped. Your advice is spot on and very useful! Thank you!

Hi Simon! After seeing this video it made me feel like I'm not alone in my craft room clutter!
I find that as I'm trimming with my paper cutter, I slip all unwanted cuts into a box! This keeps them from piling up on the work surface! When fussy cutting I keep a smaller container on my work surface to deposit small pieces as I go! It seems that the paper clutter is the hardest to manage and this helps me a lot! Your videos are helpful and informative and enjoyable because you keep it moving!!! Thank you for sharing!

What a GREAT video! I came away with all kinds of ideas that I look forward to using. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think I actually saw products that I NEED to buy - other than the organization tools! How can that be? I just did a MAJOR purge, selling and/or donating things I don’t really use anymore. Or my tastes had changed to other things.
As I said, I look forward to putting some of your tips into action with what I’m left with but I think the first thing I need to do is to organize my mind as to what crafty types of things I want to focus on. I just may be in some trouble where I have a little bit of everything but not enough of any ONE thing to be able to create what catches my eye.
For example, as mentioned above, I recently had a crafty garage sale and I donated pretty much everything that didn’t sell to my local K-8 school’s art teacher. Now I’m realizing ... gee, maybe I shouldn’t have given her ALL my ink pads. ALL OF THEM!!! To be fair, I did donate just about all my stamps to that art teacher and another teacher at a local private, but limited funds, school so how much ink do I really need? Well, the answer is, I at least need SOME!! I’ll have to look through what I didn’t sell and hope there are ink pads in there that I’m forgetting about.
Phew!! Sorry. I DO go on and on. I am truly inspired by what you’ve done. The volume of supplies you showed us did not seem overwhelming as some organization videos are to me, so your ideas seem doable to me. And if they weren’t? Well what would be the point? Excellent and completely inspiring video, Simon. (I hope it’s okay to call you by your first name even though we’ve never officially met. You may call me Elizabeth.) SO VERY INSPIRING! In all my yammering above, I don’t seem to have thank you, so ... thank you! Very much!

@@simon.hurley use a small cardboard box to indicate it is recycling. That's my method anyway.

I have a small garbage on one side and a large recycling bin on my other. The amount of 'garbage' you actually have is way less.
Great job. Great videos and you're great at showing others how you do everything.

I use an empty breakfast cereal box and put it right beside my garbage can, then when the cereal box is full, I put the whole thing in the curbside yellow bag.
Sometimes the cereal box falls over though, so I put a ring of masking tap on the base.
I adore recycling! I wish I was as organized in my art room as I am at recycling! Maybe I need to get the garbage truck guy to inspect my room once a week. And give me report card with a letter grade to show my mum

You definitely have to have a place (home) for everything. Then it is a breeze to clean. Believe me I learned the hard way.

Yup, having a system is key. Plus not overstuffing every drawer so you aren’t scared to open it to put things away 🤣🤣 your room is perfect!

Thank you for sharing tips and ideas with us. It helped me a lot. My storage changes as supplies grow or I add new crafting skills. I like to see what others do. You are amazing and have such a bright future!
