Hey Ginger and Mike - I am in Australia - this song has always made me tear up again. More so now because a few months back he was diagnosed with a malignant tumour is his jaw. He had emergency surgery and is still in rehab. He has to learn how to speak again let alone sing as they had to remove a part of his jaw. That is so very wrong. He is a lovely man. So please enjoy his gorgeous voice. BTW I love the beatles but I adore when people can turn a song into something more passionate. No need to decide which is better

The Scottish Pipe and Drum bands are huge in Australia, every capital city has multiple bands; even larger country towns has them, also Highland Dancing is huge in Australia. When l was growing up, l couldn't wait for the fourth Sunday of every month; for our local band to come marching up the road in front of our house, you would hear the bagpipes way before you saw the band. We also had the local Salvation Army brass band march up the road, every second Sunday of the month.

Glenn unfortunately recently died at 73 from Covid but he also managed The Little River Band and he mortgaged his house to finance Johnny's Whispering Jack album which renewed his career. His biggest hit, solid eighties sound of John Farnham. Lot of Aussies like background bagpipe music in their songs.

Australian music owes a lot to the Scots. Jimmy Barnes, the Young brothers if AC/DC and The Easybeats and Colin Hayes of Men At Work all came to Australia from Scotland as children, and there may be more. AC/DC included bagpipes in A Long Way To The Top, played by their first lead singer Bon Scott. You should check out their early 70s black and white video where they are playing on the back of a truck driving through the middle of Melbourne.

A small point Robyn, but Dave Evans was AC/DC's first singer. He was kinda 'pants'. Thumbs up for everything else you said!

One of the other very few rock songs featuring bagpipes also came out of Australia - the original Bon Scott version of AC/DC's "It's a Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock'n'Roll)".
Apart from that, I can only think of Sir Paul McCartney's "Mull of Kintyre" featuring bagpipes.

Scottish Highland Games have been a regular part of Aussie culture. A lot of Scots moved here in the early 19th century. I'm 1/8th Scottish, had an uncle who played the bagpipes, and I competed in some caber tossing and such things at several Highland Games around Victoria, Australia.

I love your reaction to the mix-stand throw. But you missed the fact that he threw it in the air like a baton and caught it, this was just after it. You cam see the throw & catch tho the camera switches which makes it a bit difficult. Obviously not pre-planned (or at least not pre-communicated), tho it's a signature move from the great man!

So NZ and Australia were settled (invaded) by English, Irish and Scottish. NZ has more bagpipe bands per population than even Scotland. My father in WW2 was a bagpiper as was his father and Grandfather and I grew up in a very Scottish community of NZ (yes, I also play). Piping in the military here is very strong and you will see an Australian band playing in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo most years.

I have been following the Journey of Mike and Ginger and I would like to put forward another group of fantastic harmonising Australian artists with possibly the best female vocalist of the 20 century....The Seekers and Judith Durham.....play any of their songs and it will turn turn turn you! Their version of California Dreamin' is the best version I have heard bar none!! So for all your Aussie fans , look up and play the Seekers from the early 1960s.....they were a phenomenom that still can't be surpassed......Come on Ginger give Mike a push!!! You were impressed by John Farnham, try The Seekers and Judith, you won't regret it!
