After his interview with Gary Neville, a lot of questions is answered in this Interview. Jose Mourinho never knew Dele Alli's demons, but he could sense that something was keeping him behind from fulfilling his potential.

His attitude is so negative, sitting with his arms crossed is such a give away. A classic pose for someone that is ignoring what he is hearing. Send him back Frank.
Man if Mourinho ever told me this I would've kicked myself into gear. He was still 23 years old and is now 26, still so young but doesn't look like he'll do anything
Strongly disagree that it was more luck than skill. But he is definitely a player that when their head is in the right place and they feel good they can elevate their game and pull off some audacious skills. In his early days he had the knack of getting himself in the right place at exactly the right time and wasn’t afraid to to try things and that’s what made him so good. You don’t score a goal like the one he scored against Palace by luck, that was a moment of Gazza style vision, improvisation, and skill.
Unfortunately for whatever reason Dele didn't listen/couldn't apply himself. I think Mourhino knew the party lifestyle had taken over, he just kept it calm and diplomatic but he knew and Dele didn't listen.
I feel like this was the missed opportunity. Mourinho wanted to have a heart to heart with him and dele clearly wanted to confess to him but he just couldn't make that final step. I always thought he was just being dismissive but now we know he wanted to tell him why he's the way he is but couldn't
Moving to Besiktas is not the end of the world. Last year in Champions League Besiktas had 10 injuries per game, only the goal keeper was from the first team. The rest was useless rotation players and u-21 kids. C'mon guys, Besiktas is a beautiful team from a beautiful city and they have the best stadium ever! It's of course a fall after Spurs and Everton but not the end of the world.
Inherently, there is nothing wrong with it. When you look at the context though, oof. Alli was one of the biggest Englush talents back in 2015,16 and 17. He could really have become something special. However, football is 50% mentality and 50% talent. And Dele had 0% mentality.

He did say 'you don't have to tell me what is going on' in his personal life present or past. Given what Dele has shared since, Jose sensed there were deeper personal issues. I'm speculating but maybe Jose was the first man to open the door to what Dele was feeling. I've been in therapy and the first occasions when someone is trying to get you to open up puts you in a defensive position i.e. 'I need to protect myself here because I can't confront this right now'. When you have a high caliber coach like Jose Mourinho giving you advices, you sit down, you shut up, you listen attentively and you apply what he prescribed. Sadly Dele Alli did not seem to care about the teaching he was receiving and he did not give an ounce of interest. He is himself to be blamed for where he stands now
the thing i realized in this clip is jose never asks dele how he "feels" or "what" he wants to achieve. dele already knows what's being told to him but i have the feeling that no one asked how he felt or what was wrong with him. some people are not afraid of their future, hence the old days. they'd like to be advised on how good things can be not how he will regret it in future. jose bluntly just tells the truth but as a leader he doesn't envisage what dele can be. i think that's the problem with today's youth.
Dele strikes me as a sensitive, shy personality. These types don’t necessarily do well with harsh criticism, from coaches and fans. Extreme drive and focus is needed to overcome these feelings, and I don’t see it in Dele’s eyes. He can still get better, just needs to find that drive again.
