Brexit : Bruce Dickinson, Iron Maiden singer, explains why he voted "yes"

  • On March 29, 2019, the United Kingdom will no longer be European. Not to displease the famous British band Iron Maiden, who has never hidden his vote "Yes" in the referendum on Brexit, two years ago. Bruce Dickinson say this agreement must be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat. "It will not change the status of the UK much, but I think it will strengthen our economic capacity, which is good for us and, in the long run, good for Europe". And if the music industry is worried about the promotion of its artists in Europe, Bruce Dickinson is once again against this idea. And to denounce : "Bullshit!".

The EU, UN & NATO have together ensured 70+ years of peace and the prosperity it brings to the EU member states. Why anyone would want throw this away is beyond me. It's also worth pointing out that the UK like other EU members, has a veto if it doesn't agree with proposals such as an EU army or Turkey joining etc.

An “Irish Exit” is when you leave without saying goodbye. A “British Exit” is when you loudly announce that you’re leaving and then wander in and out of the door while you decide if you really want to leave or not, angrily complaining the whole time.

I find it always a bit annoying when musicians get political. Bruce Dickinson however, is not your every day musician, the man is highly educated and has and does business with pretty much every country in the world. Although I agree with Bruce on the point of Brexit and his visions on the current state of the EU, his way of explaining left me a bit puzzled. Especially the Putin thing at the end. Lastly the look of him worries me, maybe it's just at the time of shooting this clip fatigue was an issue, but I've known Bruce to be always in good health and looking like it. Anyways, hope he's still kicking it like usual, may Iron Maiden continue to be one of the most successful band on the planet for another 250 years.

Bruce is speaking as a business man, both as Iron Maiden being a corporation that travel and play all over the world and also as man who runs other businesses. Now you as an indie musician, do you think you will be able to travel around Europe as easily? Probably not. Can you fly to America, Australia etc to try to promote your music in those countries? Probably not. The English do support brexist so no surprise Bruce supports it as well, but at present, and looking at the deal the UK gov has negociated, it doesn't seem the UK will be in a better position the it currently is as a member of the EU. Man our democracy is broken. Each one voting for themselves and no-one thinking about countries and states as a whole.

He should know history better, he mention the populism and people not happy, yes, that is not due to the EU, that is why Europa was always at war, the EU put a damper on the war and created a diplomatic channel to deal with those disagreements and provided a economic reason for countries that historically would be at war with each other to get along, make commerce and be friends.

Tattooed Millionaire (1990, before he left)
      Balls to Picasso
      Skunkworks
      Accident of Birth
      (a classic!)
      The Chemical Wedding (1998)
Tyranny of Souls (fantastic album after he had rejoined Maiden in 2005)
He came back with a massive hit with maiden in a Brave New World 2000, was their best in years at the time. In summary he came back with a better deal so get your facts correct.

The BEST answer in this whole chat! UK people should have more fear of their own monarchy, taking out worker's rights, than Putin's goverment, who is only defending Russia from U.S. greed. The power at the moment is held by the EU and that's why ppl want out. And funnily enough although Bruce is a businessman that voted to leave, he is in the minority, as most businessmen voted to remain where they can keep wages low by employing unskilled migrants on minimum wage and forcing ppl to have to take 'six jobs for make a living'

+Dave Shortland I agree with you about the powers who rule the EU in this moment (I'm also Italian, so I feel the same way about that politicians who wants Europe to be a government from the bankers and a satellite of the U.S., instead of making her own policies, who make the whole Europe, even Britain, great after WW2)
But I'm not agree with you about how symbolic the monarchy would be. If it is symbolic, why are they here? Symbolic is an old castle, a museum, a system who can made Sex Pistols be banned by the national radio (BBC) just for writing a song that means protest (God save the queen) isn't symbolic at all!
And about payments, the truth is an average worker in England, and the rest of Europe, specially in the 90s of the previous century, never had that problem that they have now to find jobs, and better, good jobs, specially younger citizens.
The solution is a general change of political systems in the whole Europe (parliamentary system worked great when Europe controls their situation, but now the things are different), in order to make democracy more participative to the whole society, and not just governments made by elites. First that, and then. Riunite Europe to make a strong economy, they can be the third, and not the fifth. Businessmen like Dickinson should understand that, specially if brexit is a fact, that means Bruce's opinion is not the minorities opinion, but au contraire!

And he's also right that for the EU there is a new relationship with the UK and the EU would be just fine and go on with it, if the UK would just do what they agreed to do. It is the UK that seems oblivious about it and making a fuss about. There's not even a hundreth of the Brexit coverage in EU media as is in UK media.

Financial experts have, for the most part, said that the UK leaving the EU will damage the UK. But let's listen to Bruce because he says the same thing we believe, despite, like most of us, having no financial expertise.
He literally starts his argument with "I can travel to other countries to perform", which is not what free travel within the EU is about, now is it? As a European Citizen I can travel anywhere within the EU and apply for a job, buy a house and start a family. I pay the same taxes, whatever the equivalent of the NHS / insurance, etc.
So I am not quite sure what Bruce is implying with regards of "travelling", so I will leave it up in the air.
As for the UK having options for trade, that the UK does. But you will have to trade by WTO tariffs if you leave the single market, meaning trade will be more expensive. Making trade deals with countries isn't something you do overnight either. Whilst both the EU and the UK will lose several benefits of the UK leaving the EU, the UK stands to lose more than the EU does.

That whole bit about having no problems with touring is incredibly short sighted. How do bands start out? Bands freely moving between countries on tour has created a diverse scene of independent music in Europe, surely that's going to become a whole lot harder with Brexit? Most independent bands based in Europe do not tour outside of Europe because the visa's alone are unaffordable. It's a real shame people of his kind of status don't recognise this, as it could be about to become really complicated for bands that don't have private jets to get in and out of the UK on tour.

@@scottkingofska For a band from the UK to go and tour the US it can be up to £5,000 in visa costs. That's an extreme example, but it's one that prices out a lot of bands from doing it. It's also not just the expenses though, it's the layers of complications it adds too when you want to hop between countries. The pit stops idea is a good one I think, as there's lots of benefits like building a more of a fanbase within an area rather than spreading it thin. I imagine that may well become the way!

    • @lakingpin6370

Bands need to build up a solid core audience in their own country before considering touring elsewhere. Hard graft needs to come first, have a day job during the week and then drive up and down the country playing any pub you can find. Do this for 4 or 5 years and if the band is any good it will have a loyal following, by which time they should be able to embark on a tour, it's worth trying to get on the bill of an existing tour which may help with costs and planning etc. But to get to that point takes a lot of hard graft and dedication, something that isn't always recognised in the current " i want it all now " world.

    @Nanou197373 5 років тому +5

Brucey, I admire you, your band and your music, but... The reason why you've never had any trouble touring anywhere in the world is because the UK shares hundreds of bilateral agreements from within the EU that have been built over the last 50 years, and coming out of the EU means they'll end and would all have to be renegotiated one by one. You can't apply the logic of the 1960's to 2018, it's not at all the same context and the UK enjoyed so many concessions within the EU that has precisely helped it get to the top ranks of the world economy, but since Brexit was announced, it has sunk to the bottom of the G7 growth forecasts. It's like tearing half a centuries of laws, regulations just to spend money remaking the very same thing with the label "UK" on it, meanwhile, the world will be moving on while the UK is stuck into having to remake everything it has willingly chosen to abandon: It is not a punishment like Bruce says, it's by choice, removing itself from all treaties (that's what Article 50 does & clearly says). The EU therefore takes the UK out of all the treaties, as per article 50's request. Having a lot of money, being a huge band will not make a whole lot of difference to you, but for much smaller bands relying on extensive touring where every penny counts, they will be delayed by extra paperwork and lost time & money to do so. The falling Sterling would also make everything much more expensive. If you want to look at the failings, it's the current Tory government & their despicable legacy, their lies, their corruption, that has been responsible for the country's problems, not the EU. As for the claim that the UK has always been a trading nation, fair enough, but then why is it choosing to come out of what is the largest trading bloc in the world with a seat at the negotiating table to make rules? It does not make any sense at all. If you look at who are the largest economies to trade with, the political climate of "America first", then Russia and China, the UK is dwarfed in size by being on its own. Besides, in the context of a global economy, the rules are now increasingly global too. Having total independence is a pure fantasy; every country in the world has established similar close ties to their closest market. The EU's the largest and is on Britain's doorstep. Brexit is removing the UK from all the treaties without replacing them by anything, so he's wrong to say that after the withdrawal agreement, there's some sort of automatic new relationship with the EU: no there is not - in the case of no deal. After March 29 next year, it'll have to redo everything from scratch to re-establish every treaty that the UK's withdrawing itself from: in other words, it's only the beginning of decades of Brexit mess.

I disagree with him on Brexit (my biggest problem isn't even that it's happening, it's the arseholes in Government trying to deliver it), however it's good to see someone who's legitimately thought it out, instead of just shouting about borders or whatever. Up the Irons, as ever!

I have no skin in the game as an American, but philosophically I believe Brexit is a good idea. All the benefits of free trade and technology sharing, etc, can be had without the need for foreign bureaucracies dictating rules and regulations to citizens of independent nations. Economic cooperation is of great value and can be had without the political merger the EU represents. I'm curious to understand your reasons for not supporting Brexit, while I agree it has become a mess in the way its been handled thus far.
I did go to university in the UK and I've always been interested in international politics.

The Hobatron that’s because you don’t listen. Go speak to a commercial fisherman and let him tell you how the EU has fucked him. You need to wake up and see the EU for what it REALLY is not what they tell you it is.

    • @stubones

Scott Charney you idiot bandy around xenophobic as if it’s actually a major reason anyone voted to leave that Eu shitpile. In 20 years time countries will be clamouring to leave that globalist disaster.

    • @TheHobatron
      @TheHobatron 5 років тому

@@stubones It was a major reason. The poster that Nigel Farage promoted showing a line of refugees with the caption "breaking point" was a big thing during the campaign. The unfounded fear of foreign people pouring in and therefore idea of "taking back control of our borders" was a big factor for many people. Unfortunately, the xenophobic rhetoric promoted by Farage and his supporters caught on.

A lot of respect for the man, but i'm sorry if he thinks that the UK will continue to be the 5th Largest economy going forward he's very much mistaken, We're already slipping as a result and things WILL get worse before they get better. And getting global trade deals with a slowing economy and a hapless shambles of a government is going to be tricky. I find it remarkable that he voted this way considering the UK is a major player in the aviation industry too.

L'Obs your description is Incorrect, the UK will still be European, it just won't be part of the EU. Europe is a large continent and the UK will still be part of it, just as Switzerland and Norway are part or Europe even though they are not part of the EU

I can not understand why Mr. Bruce Dickinson says that the EU restricted the UK's ability to relate to the rest of the world and that getting out of it, will improve that point. I am sorry to say that, I think Mr. Dickinson is only repeating some of the fallacious arguments used to convince the British people to vote to leave the EU.

I've always loved Iron Maiden's music, regardless of politics. Knowing Bruce is pro-brexit is the cherry on top. Rock on!
Btw, Putin is anti-globalism so, not sure why he threw in that last Putin dig.

This aged like milk. These days Dickinson is moaning about the results of what he voted for.
''The prices of food and energy prices will go down if people back brexit'' - Boris Johnson 2016
As per Putin, he's headlines everywhere and not smelling of roses. That's on top of the tory party taking campaign money from Russia and partying instead of leading the country.
