    Brian Lara is one of the most elegant batsmen that this game has produced, his record speaks of that. In this video the first match was against Australia, when Australian team was one of the best in the world. There are a lot of things in cricket, if you do not understand the nuances and the details, it would be difficult for you to understand as how great a batsman is Brian Lara. I believe one of the best batsman against spin bowling.

    Deciding what shot to play depends on the speed of the ball, where the ball bouncers, what type of delivery (that what is the ball been bowled is called) and what form of the game you are playing. Generally the batsman will look at where he thinks the ball will bounce than watch it from the bowlers hand as they have less than a second to make a decision with fast bowlers. Types of bowlers vary from fast, fast medium, medium fast, medium and spin. The ball can swing in the air which is like a curve ball and depending on the condition of the pitch how fast it will travel after bouncing, how high it will bounce. Spin bowlers can make the ball turn left or right from the bounce as swing will happen mostly after the bounce. There is other types of bowling as well. When hitting a ball timing is more important than power as that a well timed shot will travel faster and further than a powerful miss timed shot. That's what Brain was good at timing. If you want to see a batter that has lots of power and good timing check out his fellow countryman Chris Gale he's like the Babe Ruth of cricket. For fast bowlers check out Brent Lee and spin bowler Shane Warne. There is also a video on amazing catches. That should full up your cricket metre.

    At 4:02, you noticed how well Brian places his shot. Very astute observation. Most batsmen favor one area to hit the ball but Lara had the ability to strategically hit the ball wherever he wanted to. Great observation.
    Also, at 05:30, you asked if there were different ways to hit the ball. The answer is Lara reinvented how to hit the ball and usually "posed" after taking a breathtaking shot. Not too many can do what he did.

    Thanks for doing this video. 260-5 means at that point the team has scored 260 runs and have lost 5 wickets (this means that 5 batsmen were out), The highest ever score in one tnnings by a team was by Sri Lanka (952 runs for 6 wickets declared vs India in 1997). I would suggest that if you have time you can check a site called espncricinfo which has lots of cricket news , player profiles and records of past cricket games. Brian Lara, who is from Trinidad and Tobago like me, has two of top records for most runs scored in one innings by a batsman, 400 runs not out and 375 runs. Many cricket experts argue over who is the better player between Lara and Tendulkar. Either way they are two of the greatest cricketers to have played in the last 25 years.

    11:30, the cricket bat is usually made from willow. It has a straight flat face, curved at the sides (for angled shots) and has an almost triangular shaped back, for density and stoutness. You can buy a good bat online, usually for over $100.

  • @gavinscott10

    09:00...It's total runs scored by the West Indies at that point (260 runs). 260-5 means 260 runs scored at the expense of 5 wickets (batsmen out so far). When all 10 men are out, they change innings so the other team can bat.

    Best way to hit
    -Straight down the ground is tad too hard to execute properly, but once you get it right, will ensure a boundary..
    - most players prefer scoring down the leg side (the part of field opposite to the batsman's bat) for hitting sixes because a lot of power can be generated that way ( for example, 5:00 is a leg side shot)
    - Brian lara played a lot of his shots on the off side(the side of field towards the position of a batsman's bat) which was a sign of pure quality.. ( for example,7:35 is an off side shot)
    -Hence it is all about the skills.. skilled players like lara, sachin, kohli, ab Devilliers and hell lot of players, hit all around the park to score runs.

    As a skill I tend to think of the cricket batter as a cross between baseball hitters and fencers, (you know, muskateers), and yes you are right, Brian Lara could read where the ball would end up in a blink of an eye. He could judge just not the direction but the length of the ball. In cricket the bowler is aiming to bounce it once before it gets to the batter, this means the batter not only has to guess how wide or close it is but also has to judge how high the ball will bounce when it reaches him. His shot selection is totally based on that ability to read the length, ie how high it will get to him, ball landing near his feet he's smacking it off a forward step, ball bouncing further away, he'll step back and hit it more sideways or behind. Ps this guy was a run machine, he could concentrate for hrs and hrs and hrs

    12:50 You're absolutely right. In Cricket to be a Batsman you don't need to be big & muscular but have the techniques & skills. You'll see many greatest of the Batsmen of all time have been quite short from Sir Don Bradman to Sachin Tendulkar & as you can see Brian Lara.

  • @gavinscott10
    @gavinscott10 6 років тому

    08:22 To answer your question..it's always better to hit it with the high arc. The goal is to hit it high without letting it touch the ground AND over the boundary (edge of field). That would give you 6 runs. Equivalent to a home run in baseball. If you hit it across the field, but the ball bounces all the way AND goes over the boundary, you will get 4 runs.
    - When the umpire waves his arm horizontally, it's 4 runs. When he raises both arms high above his head, it signals 6 runs.

  • @gavinscott10
    @gavinscott10 6 років тому

    He occasionally danced down the wicket (track) to attack the bowlers. Very rare indeed. If you look at other batsmen, Chris Gayle, for example, you would notice they stand in one spot and hit the ball. Brian had the ability to move around before the hitting the ball and knew exactly where the spinning ball would be regardless of who was bowling it.

  • @mohankumaras
    @mohankumaras 5 років тому

    Only thing that matters is you hit the ball away. Batsman adjusts his body position and his bat swing to hit the ball. Some people are really good at getting into good position to hit the ball to the maximum benefit. If the ball reaches the boundary (rope or the triangle barrier around the ground) it counts as 4 runs, if the ball directly lands outside the boundary it counts as 6 runs. If the ball stays inside the boundary runs are scored by running to the other end. So hitting the ball to the boundary is the more lucrative option. That boundary is atleast 70meters away (76yards). So you need a lot of power to hit the ball to the boundary. AB de Villiers is amazing because he can hit ball beyond the boundaries in any direction. Especially behind himself because to get the body position right and to time his shot while generating the required power is impossibly difficult. You need super human reflexes to do that and he does that consistently. You must remember that ball is coming in around 90miles an hour or faster, and he has about half a second to react. He is just super human.

    Brian Lara, best West Indian batsman. In Top 3 best batsman ever in the world.
    He was very flamboyant in his batting style. He liked to please the crowd and treated spin bowlers with disdain. If he was as serious with his batting as Tendulkar was, he probably would have had a higher batting average but Brian didn't really care about averages. He was just there to entertain and destroy all bowling.

    So there's no correct/ incorrect way to play shots (especially in this day and age, where improvisation is a great strength). Though a coach would probably tell you to keep your head still and above the point of contact, get your front foot out of the way, and play with a straight (vertical) bat.
    Lara was known for his repertoire of shots. However, AB DeVilliers is someone who's on a whole different level, when in comes to range of shots.
    A ball bowled to the batsman without it touching (pitching, it's called) the ground is called a full-toss. They are very easy for batsman to pick up, and are usually put away.

    Yes, you got a lot of things right. Good job for a new viewer of Cricket!
    Yes, Cricket is a very temperamental and technical game as opposed to Baseball which is more of a power game. There are a thousand different things that one needs to perfect before you can be considered a member of the elite club of the likes of Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar (who btw is called the god of Cricket). The sheer beauty and grace of Lara's shots makes you want to keep watching him all day.
    Yes, the 'straight drive' as it is called, that goes in the general direction of the bowler is a good shot to execute because that will give you 4 automatic runs (most times). Of course not every delivery can be hit a straight drive and the batsman has to read the ball and make the split second judgement as to where it can be hit for maximum benefit. This is where great batsmen like Lara and Sachin stand apart. There is a specific type of straight drive call the bowlers' back-drive which goes right at where the bowler has bowled the ball from, taking advantage of the bowler's follow through action which prevents him from stopping it. This kind of back-drive is both advantageous, in terms of automatic runs accrued and also helps gain a psychological advantage over the bowler.
    Yes, in Cricket one doesn't have to be a big man to be a great batsman. Both Lara and Sachin are not very big. Lara is taller than Sachin but he is not very big by West Indian standards :) Cricketers need to have stamina and strength, of course, like in any other sport but most of the shots that are shown in this video are the more perfectly timed ones. The shots where the batsman has been able to 'middle' the ball on the bat which then utilizes the natural "stroke" of the willow of the bat that makes the leather of the ball bounce off giving you the added advantage of an accelerated shot. (all this happens in one smallest fraction of a second btw)
    Yes, temperamentally, Cricketers are generally more composed and less visibly aggressive (as compared to say Soccer or Baseball ot Americal Football) on the field due to the nature of how technical the game of Cricket is. Cricket originally was and still is called a gentleman's game. But that depicts only the exterior of the players not necessarily whats going on in the mind. :)
    Last but not the least Brian Lara ("the great" if you will) is the man to have scored the most runs in a single innings in Test Cricket. He scored 400 not out against England in 2004 and the record still stands. Here is a list of most runs scored in an innings by players around the world (stats.espncricinfo.com/wi/content/records/208504.html).
    Here is a list of top Cricket bat brands (www.trendingtopmost.com/worlds-popular-list-top-10/2017-2018-2019-2020-2021/highest-selling-brands-products-companies-reviews/best-cricket-bat-brands/) and here is a picture that shows the contours of a Cricket bat. The only thing I knew about cricket is that the ball they use is REALLY hard so imagine if you get hit by a 80mph Hard ball. You're done. It's a wrap.

    balling only throw no bouncing ( in cricket any type balling apply in right way )
    base only hit , no variation ( in cricket any type of shot apply according to rules )

      Allure Vision hi just to answer a few questions you had raised regarding the game of cricket.
      In regards to the bat been curved if you take an closer look at the rear end or back of the bats that is actually the case and bat sizes tend to vary in accordance to the batsmen's preferentials.
      With regards to Brian Lara going deeper in his crease that's known has an playing of the back foot the reason for that technique is to grant the batsman time to either counter or play an bouncer or short ball.
      Basically an short ball is an bowl or type of bowl used by an fast bowler where by he deliberate bowls the ball so it bounces short on the pitch so it's difficult to hit or negotiate for the batsman has upon arriving towards the batsman it's already rising. The back foot shot is an defense or an counter to short balls in general if an bowler decides to bowl full or yorkers where the bowl will bounce just in front the batsmans crease or stumps the batsman should play on the front foot.
      In general terms if the ball is short back foot is the way to go but it makes it tricker to generate power but it gives you a little more time.
      In relation to is better to risk going for an 6 or 4 it's ultimately dependent on the match situation.
      Risk=Reward 6 maybe two additional runs but risk being caught especially if you don't time your shot or don't get the right connection with ball. Most times you'll see teams chasing scores in T20s(120 balls a side) trying to score sixes if the game is going down to the wire.
      The highlights you were watching were from test matches(the 5 day format) which is why both teams were dresssed in full white and ball is red(in one day cricket it's white) .
      In terms of highest scores in test cricket it was set by Sri Lanka against Keyna if i'm not mistaken (1006/8). One day cricket(300 balls) it was 438 chased by South Africa after Australia set an insane total of 435. In T20s it's 272/5 by Australia against Sri Lanka.
      I might be a little off with my totals but i'm certain most of them are pretty close as for individual totals go Brian Lara owes two: 401 not out against Kenya in a test match and 500 not out in a first class match the man is a living legend.
      If you're thinking about continuing your interest into the game of cricket you should check out another West Indian by the name of Chris Gayle he holds the record for most sixes in the T20 format and most individual 100+ totals in the T20 format.
      There's another South African Batsman by the Name of AB DE Villiers his known as "Mr 360" for his ability to hit the ball anyway in the park and holds the record for the quickest hundred in one day cricket against the West Indies ironically enough.
      If there's anything further you'd like to know I'd be happy to help to the full extent of my knowledge lol.
      It's good to see an content creator so diversified or open to new ideas very encouraging.
      PS: In terms of running individual runs between the pitch it's limited to 4 (same as the boundary) been binge watching your videos keep up the good work.
      Apologies for any grammatical errors i'm typing on my phone
