I have a stock chassis clod that I've done twin jconcepts regulator steering kits with dual 35 kg servos. For shocks I went with a set of traxxas emaxx shocks with 3 hole pistons and 30 weight oil. The truck also has ball vearings, steel anti rotation brackets, and steel pinions. It still retains its old school looks but runs and drives so much better with these mods!
Whoa! You can't get more retro Tamiya ''Old School'' then a Clodbuster I still could remember the mid 80's TV commerical in which the kid keeps saying ''IT REALLY DOES IT!!'' which I tried my hardset to look for that commercial on UA-cam but no luck at all. Awesome job on the driving of this classic monster truck I love the yellow paint job your friend did on it it really makes it ''POP!''👍👍😎😎👍👍
Hi there. Oh I don't remember Tamiya ever being on TV over here. I know that there were videos that ran in some hobby shops but I think that was too high tech for our local shop 😂 Yeah this looks great in Lunchbox yellow. Many thanks indeed for your great feedback. Best wishes to you 😁👍
The Clod Buster is such an awesome platform to work with. In stock format, it's bouncy, rattles, and screams 80's! On the flip side, you can modify the heck out of it, get it screaming fast with good handling and nice supple suspension and build yourself a nice handling monster truck. You can't go wrong with it, either way.
Hi Fil. Yeah each to their own and all that. It's great that there are all these products now that allow us to hop up these old designs. Like I was saying in the video I think I'd leave a Clod mainly standard and have an LMT as a modern basher. One day maybe if I save my pennies. Thanks for watching mate 😁👍
Hey Pete, another cracking video sir! That clod looked lovely in that custard yellow colour! Quality seeing it up against the mighty blackfoot and lunchbox, looked like a fun afternoon. You brought up a very good point regarding modifying your clods.... There's pros and cons to both sides as you correctly pointed out. The only solution is to get two, one to hop up to the max, and another to keep stock!! 😂 I have an original 87 bow tie that has been modified in every way possible - Aluminium dampers, aluminium sassy chassis, carbon suspension mounts, carbon servo mounts, aluminium body posts and chassis brace, twin on axle 35kg servos, aluminium high torque servo savers, working headlights etc etc. I think the only bits left that are Tamiya are the wheels, body and diffs! It is an absolute beast, and weighs an absolute ton! Got a showcase video of it on our channel if you are interested in meeting it in person mate! But, like you say, it's not really a Tamiya any more..... so I bought a super clod kit to build and keep totally stock..... Sorted!! Either way, these are great fun to blast about. All the best fella. 🍻 👍 👍 👍
Hiya. Oh I've not seen your Clod vid but I'll seek it out. I think that back in the day there weren't any alternative big monster truck RC's so it was a case of modding the Clod as much as you could to get what you wanted. I just think that now there are ones available that are just a load stronger and quicker that you might be better with one of them for bashing about and have the Tamiya for nostalgia purposes. If my friend does the upgrades to his Clod then he's going to give me the rest of the bits so if I can get hold of the other bits then I'll have one of my own 🤞 Cheers for your great feedback as ever mate. Best wishes 😁👍
@@PeteWylieRC I can definitely see your point mate, especially if you already own some big, tough, fast brushless Traxxas models etc. Sounds like a cool little project, or should I say, 'big' project if you get the chance to build something up from your mates unwanted pieces..... lots of ideal stomping ground for a clod in the New Forest! 👍 👍 👍
@@PeteWylieRC Sorry dude!! 😂 A dirty company to say the least..... Never had one, never wanted one, never will have one!! I will stick with my Tamiyas and Kyosho's.... even if they do break all the time! 😉 👍 👍 👍
Hi there. Oh yeah it's the old GoPro on a stick in one hand and RC remote in the other hand method of videoing. Usually works out pretty well. Many thanks for your great feedback. Much appreciated 😁👍
@@PeteWylieRC Thanks for sharing your technique. I was thinking you had a 2nd person that could run fast or a 2nd car. I think I will definitely give it a try but on a nice flat surface at low speed. Take care and enjoy the hobby. 🫶
I had seen these upgrades, which make the Clod a very precise racing machine. I'm intersting in the steering sets, for a better handling. But as long here're no competitions like in the US the chassis for me is a price overkill. Brass or metal can be put into the original chassis, becaus the servo can be removed. But thanks for doing this video, it'll help for my plans.
Yes I think that there are improvements that can be made to this without going all out with the expensive upgrades. The steering is a bit vague on the stock truck. Hope your project goes well. Many thanks indeed for your great feedback 😁👍👍
Hiya Pete! Great video as always and cool to see you out having fun with a Clod! I'm in the same camp as you, I love mine in stock form and as it's the Gray special edition it's gonna stay as it is! But I also agree that there is so much you can do with these trucks, whatever floats your boat is fine with me! That's the great thing about this hobby and long may it continue. It was no surprise that in most of the collisions with the other trucks, the Clod came out better! You go some awesome footage out there, somehow your GoPro captures made it look a lot faster than it really is! Hope you do get one mate, maybe we can go Clodbusting together one day! Cheers mate! 😎👊👍
Hiya Mark. Yeah I know this hobby isn't really about value for money but all those big upgrades come with big price tags and I think you'd be better with a modern truck really. Doing the upgrades is good for tinker time though so each to their own like you say. Oh yeah my Blackfoot had its servo saver broken in one of those crashes and it was a high torque one at that! Yeah when I looked at the footage I thought that some bits looked speeded up but they certainly weren't. Be interesting to see what happens with Rob's twin brushless setup in his. Carnage I reckon 😂 I might end up with a Clod one day but currently I have no shelf big enough for it 😂 Cheers for your great feedback mate. Best wishes 😁👍👍
Hi Pete, so nice to have Nicks Clodbuster on your channel, it’s certainly and beast of an RC! Oh how rude, comparing sizes 😂😂😂 seriously, a lot of RC components to upgrade and like you said, cost effectiveness compared to the Losi and perhaps even the new Arrma GorGon? 😊😊nicely done though, very informative 😊😊as always 😊😊best wishes 😊
Hiya John. Yeah it's great to feature this one as it's a classic Tamiya. Yes I think it's more cost effective to get a modern truck but there is the fun of doing all the upgrades. The Gorgon is really good value but fairly basic and 2wd. Would certainly consider it. The LMT is the one I really wanted since it came out but can't justify the expense at the mo. Many thanks indeed for watching and your great feedback as ever. Best wishes to you 😁👍
Hiya Craig. Yeah it's quite an impressive beast but with some weaknesses. Would be good to get one although when I borrowed this from Nick I had no shelves big enough to put it on! Cheers for watching mate 👍👍
I also run the Hobbywing 880 with dual Dynomite 20T brushed motors, however Ive only been running on 2s. Would like to upgrade the stock ACOMS servo to something a bit stronger. Was thinking something 25kg to 35kg, thoughts? Keep in mind using the stock steering setup.
Nice one! I love the hop up part of the hobby, however there is something to be said about getting a kit for the kit. I agree with you could just get a better stronger RC for similar upgrade money. But to each their own. :)
Hi there. Yeah you could end up spending serious money on this and end up with something completely different to how it started. Like I say in the video I think I'd go for the LMT if I was spending that much on a monster truck. Like you say, everyone has a different view and it's great that these products are available. Many thanks for watching 😁👍
Yeah she is a beast all right!!! True that steering seems a little wobbly that I would work on a little bit. Other than that? I agree, fix the small things and keep on running. :) Another fun one bud. And you sure do get a feel for that size difference, seeing it next to the lunch box. :)
Hiya Nick. Oh yeah the steering has rather a lot of play. I'm not sure it can be a whole lot better with the servo in the middle on the chassis. You can see why people do the mod to put the servo on the axle. It's still rather good fun as it is. Many thanks for watching mate. Best wishes 😁👍
Hi there. Yeah I enjoyed the unsophisticated handling of the stock Clod. Oh yes my poor Willy did look a bit tiny and pathetic in comparison ☹️ Many thanks for watching 😁👍👍
This is the first time I've seen a Clod next to a Blackfoot and a Willy. I didn't realise they were that big. Oh, and why's that lady holding up the fence @1:49 ???
Hiya Derek. Oh yes this really is a whopper. It's a similar size to my Arrma 4s really but taller. When I was looking after Nick's one while I was doing the video I didn't have any shelves it would fit on so it had to just stay on the desk. Many thanks for watching mate. Best wishes to you and yours 👍👍

Hiya Dom. Yeah like you say the body shell wouldn't survive many fast crashes or probably many not very fast crashes. I am thinking that if I can raise enough money by selling some other RC cars then I might get the Losi. It's about the only RC that I'm really yearning for at the mo. Oh yes it's always good when your friends let you have a go on their RC cars, unless you inadvertently break them 😬 Cheers for watching mate 😁👍👍
Hi there. This belongs to my friend and he says he got the paint from Halfords so it's automotive rather than model paint. He can't remember exactly what it's called but there are only a couple of yellow options available there. Possibly Ford? Thanks for watching 😁
Once I've upgraded this clod pete you can have the chassis and whatever else I don't need as all the parts will be shoved in a box never to be seen again as I said to you the other day you can have them and you will just need to source some axels etc and you will be good to go
Hi Pete, quick question for you. Do you know of any vgc HPI Firestorm flux truggy's going anywhere at all. Would even consider the brushed Firestorm to upgrade to brushless, or even a Firestorm roller. Only looking for good condition really. Cheers mate.
Hi there. Well as it happens I've got a fully functional Firestorm in good condition and also a roller with no wheels or electronics. The runner has been converted to use a Traxxas spur gear and clutch plates because of the lack of HPI spur gears. I also have a spare Traxxas spur. I do love it but I don't run it so much these days in case I break something that is difficult to get hold of. I'd consider selling it and the roller together.
