My dad taught me two things about the "hidden scribe" tool. 1) you can use it to scribe lines onto a work piece. 2) it's usually the first thing to go missing from your toolkit. I have at least 3 combination squares, and zero scribers! :) Your videos are brilliant, demystifying tools is a great way to make people more comfortable with the tasks at hand and help them become more self-reliant. Keep up the great work.

Honestly I've been doing a lot of carpentry work for well over 30 years. I think I've learned more from this lady in the last five than I did over the last Thirty. It makes all the difference in who teaches you when you're being raised. She should really be integrated into shop classes for teens in High School

You guys need to quit being children and respect the commentator. You need to quit being children respect my comment. Everyday is a new learning experience for everyone. The only thing I didn't know in that whole video was that you could find the center of a dowel that way with that particular tool. So if you girls don't like it, I do have an old timey 2 inch auger bit that you can shove some place and I will gladly lend it to you for free. Then again most of you probably don't know what a bit and brace is. That comes from judging by the way you all hide behind your little icons and avatars and don't show your face.

Just purchased my first combination square (I've always gotten by with the triangular speed square) and the first thing I noticed while inspecting it was the odd pin in the bottom. I googled "How to use a combination square" and your video was the first hit. Thank you for the answer and the introduction to the other add-on options. The protractor will be a major help. I can't believe I'm just finding out about this at 47 years old! Thank you!

My dad taught woodshop and the combination square was one of the five tools he had given me by 1st grade. He showed all the features of each tool and of course the safety rules. I didn't master all his skills but I am going back to my roots now in retirement and using what I recall to tinker and build in my shop. Thanks for showing others these small tips to use tools to their fullest.

I have been using combination squares for almost thirty years and while I knew about the scribe tool, I have never been able to master the insertion of the ruler into the anvil. There is always a sheer moment of panic whenever I have to pull the ruler out and flip it. I own several squares now because I can never get them re-inserted once I remove them. A video on aligning that half moon pin and sliding that ruler back in and squaring it up...that would be something that would change my life! Thanks for all the work you do for us. You are invaluable in this community.

Just loosen the knob a turn or two and push up on it (it is spring loaded) while inserting the blade. May have to turn the knob slightly one way or the other to get the key to align with with groove in the blade.

I hsve an Empire comb. Sq that I’ve been using for 50 years, but I now need to replace as its falling apart, and yes, I knew a bout the scribe, but have always preferred a pen or pencil mark. I am a strictly incidental user. Neither hobbyist, nor woodworker am I. I certainly admire those who are, but I’m more repair what needs fixing type of guy. Leah, you obviously know that you are one of the stand-out builder-teachers on YT. Your lucid and accessible explanations have made me a big fan of yours. At 70 years young, I have an abiding admiration for those who can transform the challenging and formidable into the accomplished! Lead on, Leah!!!!

Leah, you are the best! Incidentally, I ran into a combination tool for the first time today at Harbor Freight (HF).I am working on a project that requires 30 degree angle. Remembering my high school days, I thought of getting a geometric or mathematical set from HF.I was intrigued seeing a combination tool but not knowing how to use it.I knew it will save my problems. So I came to youtube to learn how to use it. The previous UA-camr talked about the scribe tool but for a different reason. He uses it to mark off the points of a straight line as you have on a measuring line.So that way he visualizes along the distance of a straight line on the board. However, I learnt more from you.You went into additional details on how to use the angle finder, how to find the center point of a sphere. Thank you very much. What a great teacher, you are!

Well Jane, I took wood shop in school, and also built a lot of stuff when I was younger using one. My girlfriend’s parents go garbage picking in the rich neighborhoods in Brooklyn. They always bring old toolboxes filled with mostly junk. I just this morning started restoring an old combination square and never noticed the part at the back. I unscrewed it and pulled it out to find a sharp point. I googled what it was, and what it was used for and it brought me to your video. Thank you for making me a little bit smarter today. Not only about that but the other add-ons on a combination square.

I have known about the scribe for decades. I found it in my youth, and asked what it was.
You might also mention that the rulers come in different lengths. I just got an 18" one from Harbor Frt. Tools, as I had misplaced my other one that was shorter. It was really awesome because the length enabled me to make measurements I would have otherwise had difficulty in making with the short ruler..
Also I'd like to mention that on the ones that have a steel ruler, that periodically disassembling the ruler from the body and cleaning out the groove of rust & debris help make it slide easier. I also put a dab of silicone grease in the groove and wipe off all excess. A couple I have do have a small spring on the screw and a tiny bit of lube keeps the spring from rusting & breaking. (I live in Washington State, and you all know we never have any rain here, so the tools stay nice and dry all the time, right?)
To get the "half moon" guide pin back into the ruler groove, I found loosening the knurled nut a lot will enable you to easily rotate the guide "half moon" to allow the ruler to easily slide back in.
    Great video, Leah. thanks.

This square was originally meant for metal working by machinists, they are always looking for a scratch awl or point to mark stuff so one was added to the square. It is such a good tool that woodworkers adopted this square years ago. Sorry just a piece of useless trivia.
