  • How should a Christian react to “cancel culture”?
Chances are that if you’ve been on social media or listened to the news in the past year, you’ve heard of “cancel culture.” Cancel culture is that practice of boycotting a person or group of people because of controversial actions or opinions. While it might have a fancy new name, this is nothing new to history. Every time period has had some individuals or practices that society deems as controversial or questionable. But are we supposed to practice this kind of behavior as Christians?
Today, Fr. Mike talks about cancel culture, and how we as Christians are called to respond to it.

The late great Roger Scruton observed that society needs confession and forgiveness because it means someone has the humility to admit their wrong doing and the other has to sacrifice their pride to accept the humility. Our society has lost that.

Thank you so much for speaking on this Father, I love listening to you. I love St. Faustina, she's taught me a lot. God's mercy is "greater" than His justice. We should emanate mercy much more than we try to be "just." Correction and forgiveness is greater than punishment.

    • @chrisdaniels3929

Justice is much more than revenge or plain punishment.
Justice is about fairness, equal treatment of all and helping people live together in peace.
Desmond Tutu and the efforts for justice in S. Africa's move away from Apartheid spring to mind. Oscar Romero is another voice of justice.

Yes! Father Mike nailed it. Especially at the end with the word “exclusion.” Every time I hear the words “promote inclusion,” all I can think is this is usually said by a person or group that will cancel someone for any disagreement to their ideas and values. Correction as opposed to cancellation is the key. Thank you, Father MIke and Ascension Presents for all you do!

Canceling is closing the door on forgiveness which goes against what Christ taught. As Catholics as stated in the Catechism we are obligated to correct an error of our brother or sister in regards to the faith or moral doctrine. For instance if a brother or sister says that abortion is acceptable in a woman being raped this would be in error in which the Church Fathers were against abortion in any circumstance and is considered a sin by the Catholic Church under the Commandment of You Shall Not Kill.

After I prayed, I felt inspired to tell people that the heartbreak of a woman who is rejected by her partner/husband/boyfriend is also heartbreaking and painful, but they carry their child to birth. Jesus says those who call Lord, Lord will not be saved unless they do the will of the Father. Paul says there are many things he has yet to teach the young church, but they are not ready for it yet. He visits Peter in Jerusalem to ask if he is teaching correctly, and Peter reminds him that the people are to take care of the widows and orphans. (Paul did not spend 3 years with Jesus learning.)Jesus's words are the words you need to study the most.

I think you should be the keynote speaker in the upcoming bishop's conference wherein the bishops will hopefully consider what to do about politicians who are bringing condemnation upon themselves by their behavior of receiving the Eucharist unworthily. The extent the Church fails to address this behavior is the extent the Church knowingly brings condemnation upon itself.

Don't be afraid of that, embrace it, because Jesus and Christianity are morally superior since He is the only one true God, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and the only way, truth, and life of salvation. So many places you look in this world, people are upending their communities over preferences and superficial reasons. I had watched a video before this of a guy apologizing for taking something out of context most likely due to the language barrier. There was a kind of self-cancel going on by going around in circles trying to justify your own opinions. For example, someone accused the guy reacting to the video of calling someone autistic or saying something is stupid implying that someone is stupid, the rebuttal to this argument was that emotional appeal of “you must hate me because…” No one can think objectively anymore because the opinion is all that matters.

Thanks Father, Mike. Although it’s difficult at times, forgiveness is one of the most important elements in our walk as Christians. If I understand correctly, you are pointing out - where do we draw the line of tolerating someone’s behaviour and correcting them while keeping them in community?
I see a risk at us saying, “it’s okay to ostracise someone for XYZ type of behaviour.” We then can become self-righteous and hurt the kingdom of God.

Nail on the head, without an existential power greater than you and capable of forgiving you you can neither be held to account nor be given grace. Mankind is flawed and thus seeking reconciliation for our wrongs through the eyes of man is flawed since your flaws cannot fully be forgiven by a flawed being.

    Father Mike,
I just finished listening to Day 173 and was a bit confused.
The widow folloed Elisha and ended up with enough oil to sell in order to eliminate her debt and have enough to live out her life.
When you said something like “If I had known the end of the story, I would have gotten more vessels. But isn’t that a desire for more than you need? Is that Greedy? I know that God gives me what I need and not necessarily what I want.
I love your voice when reading the bible. It is very comforting. Your joy in the LORD is obvious, and I hope others hear that joy and want it to.
Thank you for your kindness and willingness devotion to share the Good News to others. I pray for the Bible in a Year family and you each night, and I pray that those who haven’t heard the Good News will be exposed to it.

    Fran Lemley

Am I shunning someone who has been emotionally abusive to me? I don't talk to them anymore. They have been hyper religious, controlling, shouted and yelled, told me nobody in our church is interested in me and I should just shut up and listen, that I'm gluttonous because I made sounds of appreciation while eating, told me that I kneel wrong at Mass (I have a spinal problem), that I pray wrong, made me cry on Easter Sunday because they spent an hour in the car lecturing me on the way to Mass, and the same on the way back, says that anyone who goes to the ordinary Mass as opposed to the Latin (which I love) is turning their back on God. They finally told me that I'm not a real Christian because they doesn't like my newly adopted dog (who they never met.) I used a neutral pronoun so as not to shame them. But I feel bad because they're family and I love them. I don't want to judge, but I can't tolerate the constant emotional abuse - this just touched on what's been going on. I can't stop feeling bad about it, but I feel I have to protect myself. Am I guilty of cancel culture?

The person Paul called to excommunicate in 1 Corinthian, has a sweet ending; in 2 Corinthians 2:5-11, he asked the Corinthian church to call him back, so the community can forgive and comfort him. Arguably, the method the church use is similar to cancel culture, but the key difference is what's next after a person is cancel? Does he always remain "cancel"? Or should we give grace? At the end of the day, Christ asks us to forgive our brothers/sisters for not just one time, not 7 times, but 77 times. This is truly a mystery of God, not that it's so difficult to understand, but we choose not to understand.

    Hi Fr Mike!
I like how you shed light onto cancel culture, our call to reflect Christ in the world, and your encouragement to us to act with more grace, truth, and mercy to others.
Towards the end, you discuss correction culture and as I understood, you see it okay to kick someone out to correct them.
What I am wondering is - where is the line drawn between correcting and cancelling and where it’s accepting? What actions make it acceptable to kick someone out vs what we will tolerate in our community?
Also - How do we mitigate the risk of ostracising someone if we want to “correct” them? (I saw parallels between the example you used as a time out at the beginning and your example with the man and removing him from the community.) Since we are all sinful and in need of God’s mercy, is there an alternate option where we can correct someone and keep them in community? (I think of how Jesus showed love and acceptance even to the tax collectors and other sinners.)

This might vary from case to case, but always start with assuring the other person that they are loved by your words and deeds. That way we hope that whatever we do to help them correct their actions won't be perceived as over-criticism.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🤖 Introduction to cancel culture and its definition.
01:25 🛡️ Cancel culture involves boycotting or shunning individuals or groups based on controversial actions or statements.
03:01 💼 Modern culture lacks objective truth and grace, making it ill-equipped for effective cancel culture.
05:18 ✝️ Christians should condemn actions and ideas, not people, as they recognize their own imperfections and the need for grace.
07:37 💔 Cancel culture lacks both truth and grace, offering only exclusion, while correction culture provides truth, grace, and restoration.

But by treating someone as an unbeliever, aren’t you excluding them from society and thus canceling them? How is that correcting them? Thanks

Unlike cancel culture, which aims to ruin someone's life (get them fired, dox their location, etc), correction only prohibits a person from participating in things that require them to be in a state of grace (so basically only reception of the Eucharist). Some serious objections warrant excommunication from the Church.
