Hey Doomie- You're really coming into your own style with this video. I'm very glad to see you building up your strength with your own style. Congrats! What's coming up next?
This was the nearest mall to Fort Eustis and I would try to spend some of my weekend there when I was stationed there in 1996-99. Thanks for the video.
I enjoyed this video, but I have to correct you. The area you're generally referring to as 'Hampton Roads' is the Peninsula part of the area, spanning from about Williamsburg to Hampton. Hampton Roads is actually separated into the Peninsula, Southside, and the Middle Peninsula (counting Gloucester) two large bridge-tunnels and the James River Bridge. I hope you continue to make content, keep it up!
Just like this mall Milwaukee Wisconsin has three strong malls total still going. You went to see Southridge but there’s also Brookfield Square in Brookfield and Mayfair in Wauwatosa.
That was r go to mall in 1992... Stationed on the USS Enterprise in N.N. Shipyards. We'd ride the bus up Warwick or Jefferson. R barricks was in the old Hunnington High School downtown N.N. Wow. Cant believe irs been that long ago... I'm so ooooold!
As far as Belk goes, Dillard's kicks it's ass anyway. I live only around Belk stores, and I drive 100 miles into Knoxville to hit up that West Town Mall Dillard's if I need a department store fix.
Tilt is cool but I miss the old arcade, way more retro feel to it. Hope you ate at Sakura Elite or Umi Sushi, best fast Japanese in town. Not joking. Sakura is kinda legendary to my and my friends, it's the only restaurant in the food court that has survived long term. I just remembered that they rebranded to Suki-Hana, but it's the same people. Thanks for these btw, makes me a bit nostalgic for home!
Dooms: how about the Military Circle Mall over in Norfolk; did THIS mall contribute to that mall's decline? (Heck, for all I know, MCM is now closed...well, either way, what're your thoughts, Doomie?)
Military Circle is further away from Patrick Henry, and its primary cause of death was crime. However, we will see if Patrick Henry Mall contributed to its decline when we come to that mall.
Well, it is our only mall. On the other hand, with the other malls closed, it has gotten the attention of a lot of less than desirables due to this. Once Coliseum closed, we started getting fights and shootings at PH. It really put a strain on folks just wanting a relaxing shopping experience(like me, I have an extreme anti social disorder, too crowded, I'm out!). The days I find it isn't packed, I love to go visit some of the stores that I loved to shop over the years, that are still there at least.
Th whole Hampton and Newport News area is becoming an undesirable place to live. It is a shame. I was stationed at Langley AFB in the mid 70's and this was a nice area back then.
@@DrummerDanVa I was born in Hampton, grew up in Poquoson, just around the corner from Langley. It has changed a lot, but there is a strong push to keep some places nice and not let them change.
I live in Tabb, Virginia, which is located in York County, Virginia, and if there is little traffic and I catch most of the green lights I can arrive at Patrick Henry Mall in under ten minutes. This was a pretty good video with quality commentary. However, I would respectfully disagree with one major point you mentioned. You said Mercury Mall didn't have any major tenant stores. Actually, when it opened in 1967, it had a wildly popular Montgomery Ward store that some locals preferred to Sears stores and J.C. Penney stores. The Montgomery Ward store later moved to Coliseum Mall. From a local's perspective, many of us consider the "Glory Years" of the mall from 1987 through 2006. Two AMC movie theaters were there next to the food court, so needless to say we spent many hours of our lives in that particular section of the mall. Later an Old Navy store replaced the theaters, but that store has now moved to the nearby Jefferson Commons strip mall. I haven't shopped there in years, and the food court and the overall look of the mall are almost unrecognizable to me now, although it still looks pretty nice. Most of the old food places and many of the original stores we frequented are long gone. Thank you for the video.
I’m always surprised my hometown mall is still kicking with all the other malls dying. Good management
That song at the end is the most 80's music I have ever heard outside of the actual 80's.
Props to management and owners. It’s a nice looking mall and seems to have a good list of tenants
Wow a journeys and cinnabun. Nice history and walkthrough 👍
Even with the pandemic, this mall seems to be doing well. You should really make another video of this mall!
The yellow glow/lighting sure does echo the photographs taken in the 70s..which had the same tint!!!
When I was growing up they had 90s music playing thru the mall and there was a theme song “Patrick Henry Mall! Is your faaaamily mall!!!!”
Hey Doomie-
You're really coming into your own style with this video. I'm very glad to see you building up your strength with your own style. Congrats! What's coming up next?
Up next will be Upper Valley Mall. After that is Four Seasons Town Center, and then McKinley Mall.
Great mall. I'm sad FYE is gone. That was my fav FYE. But the mall looks great
Anchor wasn’t torn down in 2005. It was reframed and finished out for the new lifestyle center wing

At 1:05 in the video, the narrator identified PH mall as being in Hampton - it is in Newport News.

Its sad to see how empty it is. I remember when you were lucky to find a parking spot and inside was sholder to shoulder

Brookfield Square is showing some cracks as the food court is half vacant. They really need to fill some of the vacancies there.
GNC and Bath and Body Works. RIP.
Great looking mall with a lot of life

This mall is great. The coliseum mall back in the 90s was good but scary.
Yeah! Virginia/Hampton boys!
Glad to know that Richmond area isn't the only area in Virginia that doesn't have a Belk anymore.
As far as Belk goes, Dillard's kicks it's ass anyway. I live only around Belk stores, and I drive 100 miles into Knoxville to hit up that West Town Mall Dillard's if I need a department store fix.
Sold some lids their.
Reminds me of Brunswick Square mall in NJ.
That's true because me and hubby went there after we got married back in 1990. I loved it.

Weird seeing a mall I go to often in a video
Great Video of a healthy looking mall.
When is the Quenby mall video coming? Idk if you can film there are some medical and government places there

Thanks, D; I'll eagerly look forward to seeing THAT one; It hasn't been looked at for quite a while, at least a year, I'm thinking..

@@MatthewWest0037 We love Poquoson. Go to more school sporting events there than Hampton.
Fairly boring design in my opinion. I guess if one area mall is going to survive, this one has all of the stores needed to do well.

Looks like a nice mall but I am seeing some empty space in there. Payless shoes? I know that store is gone now.
Nice mall I like it
Really wasn't my favorite mall. A lot of my friends liked it though. I like the other malls in hampton roads better
That was a cool video. It reminds me of the Woodbridge Mall in Woodbrigde, NJ. Its as big and cool as this one.
