When experiencing feelings connected to trauma, you probably got a lot of unhelpful messages like “just let it go.” Or, “Concentrate on the positive.” These are common strategies to try to deal with the trauma of the past. The trouble is, these lead to bypassing what needs attention and can delay the process of healing.
When we try to “just let it go” we can end up with an inner voice that says things like, “what’s wrong with me that I can’t just get over it?” This type of inner voice often develops in response to outside pressure to chin up and keep going no matter what. And it can add shame and self-blame onto an already painful situation.
This kind of dynamic is often part of our response to trauma. Somehow, on the outside, we got the message that we shouldn’t be so upset. We shouldn’t feel so hurt. We should, in fact, just get over it. No matter what it is…
When so many of us have been pushing ourselves to just get over it, it’s a truly radical act to stop and simply acknowledge that something’s hard.
What happens when you acknowledge how hard it is? It can be a truly great relief, like laying down a burden you’ve been carrying.
But Ann Weiser Cornell has another option. Let her tell you about one of the kindest things you can do for yourself…

You're welcome, Lily! I'm so glad this is something you can revisit, and the healing way to be with what's within you is so important, isn't it?

I heard by chance when I came home from shopping because it was the next video... sounds very good and meaningful. It really isn't a solution to force ourselves to only think positive when there is so much stored in the background...🙂
