For people deciding between the Sigma and the Tamron, I just wanted to add to the conversation that the Tamron is weather sealed - combined with the lighter weight, makes it easier to hike/travel with.

I owned the Sigma 28-70 for about two months after selling my three year old Tamron 28-75 and before buying the new Tamron 28-75 G2. My experience is the small Sigma was not noticeably better than the Tamron G1, only slightly lighter. Sold it and am now shooting with the Tamron 28-75 G2 because it seems to offer a bit more sharpness, smoother bokeh and is only marginally heavier than the small Sigma. My experience is not scientific, only anecdotal.

I saw so many reviews saying how sharp the sigma 24-70 is. As someone having used now two copies-it sharp in the dead center, that’s about it. Outside of the center third it’s sharpness drops horrendously.
Not sure where so many people see “sharpness” with this lens. I’d like a lens that I can align a subject on the third line and still get a very sharp image. Not so with the Sigma. The Tamron on the other hand is exceptional.

I can't speak with too much authority on the Sigma 28-70 bc I haven't tested that lens for review yet, however the Tamron G2 really stands up to the Sony G-Master and SIGMA art, making it a pretty incredible lens for its price point. I don't think you can go wrong either way, but if you're someone who plans on sticking to one brand over the other in the long run that may be the determining factor.

Well, for the price difference the Sony GM doesn't even exist! I hope they release an updated, smaller version in the $1300-$1400 range to actually compete with Sigma. Looks like Samyang just released their 24-70 and yet it's 300g HEAVIER than the Sigma and Sony??!! Not sure why anyone would choose a heavier option at this point in the game. Seems like the worst choice of all for me personally.
Tamron seems like a great choice if you aren't totally in love with 24mm. I'm personally waiting for Sigma to release a new version that doesn't have dust issues and is hopefully at least 100g lighter. I love compact lenses but the more I get into photography, the more willing I am to carry bigger, premium lenses around. We'll see what new announcements we get in the coming year!

@@kevinrtres I owned the T 28-75 since its release in 2018 then sold it a month ago. Briefly tried the Sigma 28-75 and in my anecdotal experience it did not produce better images than the Tamron but it was somewhat smaller/lighter. Sold the Sigma and just picked up the Tamron 28-75 G2 and my initial impressions are it's better than its predecessor most noticeably in smoother bokeh and slightly sharper IQ. It's supposed to focus faster too. I'm still within the return window for the T28-75 G2 and am contemplating the Sigma 24-70. For my frequent run and gun style I think I'll stay with the much lighter Tamron G2 and look to primes when I need ultimate separation.

@@tomirwinphoto I have been caught up with exactly this conundrum - 24-70 vs the new g2. Just like you I also like the separation and the crispness the primes give - I think I'll sit on the fence for a while longer.

    • @tomirwinphoto
      @tomirwinphoto 2 роки тому +2

@kevin ruiters My decision was based on the fact that the differences in image quality among midrange zooms is minor in comparison with that of a prime lens. Currently the Sigma 24-70 is only $50 higher than the Tamron 28-75 G2 so my decision to go with the new Tamron was not about price. The Sigma is 50% heavier with maybe a 2% improvement in IQ or maybe less. The light form factor of the Tamron made my decision. I've got 3 primes for when I need more "pop." Sigma Art 135 1.8, Sigma 85 1.4 and Rokinon 35 1.4. Also have the Tamron 17-28 and 70-180.

The auto-focus is so good on all of these lenses, I don't think any of them will present a problem there. Rather, if you are looking which is best for video, consider the weight difference in the Tamron along with the updated features in regards to manual focusing options it presents. If you want something light-weight for video, that also lets you pick A/B focus points, and has good control of focus breathing, the Tamron is a really good option. 1. As heavy or heavier than the lens I already have
    2. Within a couple hundred bucks of the Sony (I live in Japan and used gear here is still expensive for Canon and Sony)
    3. Without OSS
So every time I want to get a smaller 24-75 range lens...I end up just sticking with the 24-105. There's no good option for FE, especially since the Zeiss midrange is so poorly designed that it's soft in the corners.

I’m not trying to be rude but I don’t see why tamron has the a and b point focus for focus pulls. I’d be hard pressed to see anyone who actually shoots something that requires a focus puller use a focus by wire lens. Also do you have to plug it into a pc to set the points every time? Just seems like a gimmick (may be useful to someone I guess). Professional film sets buy matching lenses so they don’t even have to move the focus pulling system to fit lens gears since that eats up time on set. Using a laptop every time you need to adjust your focus points sounds like a hassle..

ever notice focus breathing so to say when filming outdoors? ive been getting crazy focus pulsing in the corners as of late with the a7III and tamron first gen 28-75

  • @SayWhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Strange.... some tests show sigma is softer in corners some that tamron. I would say take SIGMA if you need wide angle.

The Tamron is the better overall build. It is far better weather sealed than the Art. The Art can't use the MF ring for Iris. It can't program focus pulls. It can't convert to linear MF for controlled rack. How this is seen as a disadvantage for the Tamron eludes me.

Yeah, seems to me if you shoot a lot video, the tamron is the way to go by a mile.

I had both Sony GM and Sigma 24-70. I got rid of Sony because I dropped it pretty heavily and official Sony service couldn't fix it beyond a warranty period (it was cheaper to buy a new one). Since I was tight on a budget I had to buy Sigma 24-70mm and that thing drove me crazy! Sigma is not Sony GM in each single aspect! I do landscape photography and for that purpose Sigma is just too bad. Non-plain focus of Sigma was just inappropriate for my work. It needs to mention how much dust it sucked for literally 2 trips to woods, not a desert. I know Sigma upgraded that lens with better dust resistance, but I did not want to buy another crapy lens and sold it to a video guy, who was more than happy (got a feedback from him in quite some time). I hope to buy a new lens for 24-70mm and really don't care about getting as wide as 24mm because I have another gm which is 16-35mm. 16-35mm is far superior than 24-70mm GM on the wide end anyway. I need to test new Tamron and may be I will buy one eventually. I like that Tamron does not sit still and issues upgrades to such popular products.

Nothing really changed! The cheap light Tamron is the worst of the 3. You pay for what you get, except Sigma ART series lenses beats all others in build quality and sharpness 97% of the time at just about half the price. Cheers

This week picked up the Tamron 28-75 G2 after having briefly owned the Sigma 28-75 and having owned the T 28-75 G1 for over two years. Of the three my initial brief use of the G2 is smoother bokeh and sharper IQ. It's supposed to focus faster too. Contemplating the Sigma 24-70 but the Tamron G2's IQ and significantly lighter weight may have me keep the new Tamron. My experience with the Tamron G1 was that it was very well made and was as good as new after 30 months of use.

@@tomirwinphoto I'm a novice photographer upgrading to Sony full frame after 11 years on a Nikon d3100, all your comments have been so helpful. I was set on the sigma art until I read all these comments about dust so not sure what to do now.
