I have both lenses. The Tamron for my Sony A9 and the Sigma for my Leica SL-2. My owners review, Sigma is bigger, but just a half pound heavier, expected since to cover the wider 24mm it has an 82mm filter vs. the 67mm. Both lenses are sharp and fast AF enough. For my SL-2 I like the better manual focus with the 5.7mp Leica EVF. I also love the look and premium feel of all metal Sigma Art, on a $6,000 camera it looks like a Leica class product and matches well with the camera. I would say I am happy with both, but if you have the money get the Sigma Art.
I spent a lot of time thinking about which one to get. But in the end I went for the Sigma because I'm using it mostly indoors on a tripod, so weight and size is not that important. And the minimum focusing distance of the sigma is extremely good when doing product reviews as I do. Also I really love having the 24mm wide angle. And I also love the bokeh. The sigma is such great value for money!
Congrats, can you check front element under flashlight for any dust accumulation ? I was about to buy this lens but then saw dust related complaints all over the internet. There is even a video on the UA-cam explaining how to clean dust already!
@@FarrukhPitafi I don’t have any dust yet. But I only use this lens in my studio and I store it in a cabinet. Even if it has some dust inside it will likely not affect image quality. I have some old lenses full with dust and they perform great. I wouldn’t worry too much.
@@MicaelWidell I know lenses tend to accumulate dust over time regardless of the manufacturer but If dust is being pumped at such a rate as being reported by owners of this lens over various forums then moisture and fungus can sneak in very easily. And that's what I'm mainly worried about. Good to know that you haven't faced such issue yet. thanks
Excellent comparison! Sigma is on my list because I miss those 4mm when I use Tamron lens. I really want Sony GM 24-70mm but the besides a huge price, a minimum focusing distance of 38cm may be a deal breaker for my style of video shooting. Would you agree?
@@TheHybridShooter thanks for the response. Would you say sigma is sharper in 4k video too? I don't care about the photos. I was intrigued to buy GM as you can get 300 EUR off when you buy GM lenses when preordering A7SIII. I was thinking of these GM lenses: 24-70, 16-35 and 24 f/1.4 (the one you have). You can get 300 eur off each of those lenses and save 900 eur.
You probably won't see the difference in sharpness, but the contrast will be much superior on Sigma, especially bellow F4. Honestly, the GM would have to be 300€ cheaper than the Sigma to be even worth considering for me :) Sony just desperately needs Mk II version of that lens.
Thanks a lot for this video, it is by far the very BEST comparison I've seen even if it's 2 years old. I just bought a (Sony A7IV) and wasn't sure if I would return the Sigma 24-70 I just bought to get the Tamron instead but no... it has a cheaper build quality, worse warranty/customer-service, worse sharpness and contrast that another video was saying it was better but it's a lie and also pretending it had better bokeh while that would had been surprising with only 9 blades instead of 11. Then the huge deal-breaker of 4mm less at the wide end... and I couldn't care much about 200$ saving, mostly with the sales of Sigma around christmas. The only advantage was 300g less but when you've tried a 2100g (Sigma 150-600mm) you realize that 540 to 835g is a joke anyway.
Great review. I'm currently on the lookout for an A7III but don't know which lens. I think the Tamron is great but I do think I'm gonna be unhappy with the starting point of 28mm. Also, I've considered the Sony 24-105mm f/4.0G OSS but I want that extra light. The Gmaster is above my budget so I think I'm gonna go for the Sigma. If anyone has advice, please help!!! :)
The zoom lock is actually very handy. My sigma is used and when facing down the lens can actually fall all the way to 70mm or just slide out a little with too much movement at the wrong angle, so especially when travelling it’s nice to have the lock.
I brought the Sigma instead and I am very happy with the performance. In fact I am patiently awaiting the Sigma FE mount 70-200mm to compliment this lens.

I have Sony E PZ 18-105mm you think it's worth upgrade to Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG? I use 18-105 mm as my main lens but it can't seem to catch true colors in low light... what do you think?
The best reviews and comparisons as always my friend, I own the Tamron and I love it, However, I prefer shooting with primes but it's nice to have a standard zoom just in case. Best Regards!
@@TheHybridShooter exactly when you have time primes are great but the diff ranges the zoom provides is really convenient keeps you from doing anything unnecessary
Nice comparison. I shot with the Tamron for a year and a half on the a7RII and then a7RIII and at first was really high on it, but the sharpness at 70mm always bugged especially recently when I found shots I took at 70mm unusable in my opinion which soured me on the Tammy a lot. So I decided to pick the up the Sigma and so far I've been really happy with it, though it sucks that I had the 67mm Freewell filters for the Tammy and the 24GM. I'll have to pick up 82mm for the sigma now... but at least I'll be able to use them on the 100-400GM with a step up ring, so there's that.
Interesting comparison as I've managed to snag a Sony A7ii for a VERY low price and it will come with the kit lens 28-70 which is OK from reading reviews but I'm after a F2.8 weather sealed lens to pair with the A7ii. I'm primarily a Fuji shooter so this is my first FF camera and as I'm quite invested in the Fuji X System I don't see myself really fleshing out the Sony E Mount system excessively. So it's either the Tamron or the Sigma lens. The Sigma lens is quite a bit more expensive where I am, about 35% more expensive for the Sigma. I find with my X-T3 I run my 16-55 F2.8 the most. I can afford the Sigma or Tamron but as a value proposition as well as capabilities wise. What would you purchase for an older Sony body like the A7ii? I really wish the Tamron was 24mm at the wide end as that is a focal length I like using as I mostly shoot landscapes and architecture.
Great video! I have the 17-28 and 70-180 Tamrons, but I have tried the Sigma 24-70, and would like to get that instead of the Tamron 28-75. Also, 3:47 : there are Sony cameras that do have a MF/AF switch, but only the A9 and A9 II, as far as I know.
Great review! Thanks for sharing man! (yes, I`m late here :). I'm really thinking about to change from Tamron to Sigma, I miss these extra 4mm and my zoom ring is really hard, I can change the zoom when mounted on the gimbal (maybe I have a defective unit). I have one (problem dumb) question for you: I saw you have 2 different sizes of VND instead using step up ring. Do you think step up ring from 67mm to 82mm is "too much"? Im asking this cause I'm really considering to do tthat (67-82). Any thoughts? Kind regards, gold content here!
Man this is so damn tough. You can get the Tamron for $1000 cad but sigma costs $1600 cad for sony. And after watching this video I'm even more unsure if that extra $600 is worth spending :(
Thanks for this great review! So you don't see any difference between the autofocus performance in video? Some of the reviews that I saw Sigma as bit slower in video.
Hi William. Long-time viewer here. Thanks for this helpful video. I have a question... I accidentally formatted both SD cards (Lexar 128GB) in my a7iii late last night! There were about 30 irreplaceable images that I had not yet transferred. Sony's formatting is notoriously unrecoverable!! I've tried several recovery apps (including Lexar's) with no success so far! I'm a Sony Pro Support member but they will only help if the cards are made by Sony! Have you ever successfully recovered data from SD cards formatted in a Sony milc? if yes, please share your method! Thanks in advance!
Hi William! Great reviews, many thanks for the research, very informative!!! Mind a quick question: I have a7III with a tamron 28-75 and Viltrox 85mm 1.8 (for portraits) combination, which is already not bad in my humble opinion. I do only stills (people mostly) However I am tempted to sell both to buy sigma dg dn 24-75. I would welcome your opinion and experience - is it worth doing so or should I stay with the current set up? Many thanks in advance
Definitely excited to see this video, from you. Which you did a perfect job covering all aspects, and I couldn't have asked for a better video. I bought the Tamron, because it was available well before the sigma. Shooting with the a7r3, on top of all your other reasons, I would prefer the sigma. Tamrons still a great lens, though I find myself never using it. 17-28 and 70-200 are my main used Lens on my 2 cameras. I think partly because the 28mm isn't wide enough, as most my shots on the 17-28 aren't at the wide end. On that note as well, I would also prefer the 14-24 sigma, VS the 17-28 Tamron, as again 17 isn't 14, and at least in my case, the 17-28 is more of a 24-28 filler.
I have an a7iii and the Tamron trinity. Mainly down to that cost:performance scale. I think I spent $100 more to get the 17 28 and 28 75 than I would’ve for the sigma (but it wasn’t available, and I definitely didn’t have the budget for the Sony g master. A lot of my shots on the 17 28 are above 24mm too, but I love using it wide when running after my toddler or using the camera as an expensive webcam. What’s great is I don’t think there’s a wrong choice with these lenses.
Great comparison as usual... When you say both of these lenses have "linear response" for focusing, it means that (in manual focusing) for a given distance, no matter speed you go to turn the ring it will go at the same point ? (if I want to put a follow focus on it for exemple)
There is nothing to calibrate on mirrorless cameras. That was only issues with DSLR cameras because of the inconsistent distance between the sensor and focusing module.
Hi William, greetings from Berlin. Great comparison as always: thorough, clear and well argued. I am still shooting with the m43 GX9 + PL12-60 (and X100V - my daily camera), and am curious about entering full frame eventually for travel zoom needs. (It won't be soon though - I'm waiting for a rangefinder-style FF camera.) I am also curious about a Fuji kit for this purpose, with the 16-80 f4. I would be very curious to see a comparison video between this A7 full frame kit vs the Fuji APS-C 16-80 kit, vs the m43 12-60 kit. How much detail and sharpness is to be gained by each upgrade in sensor size, and between each of these great lenses? It seems the crop sensor lenses benefit with longer reach and less weight, but sacrifice light gathering. But how much does each factor matter? This must be a big question for many of us, and I bet you would make an excellent comparison video of all three options.
Thank you! Unfortunately, I am not able to get all of that gear together at the same time, so I am not able to do that. I intend to make a comparison in the future when I will have comparable FF and APS-C lenses.
@@TheHybridShooter Ah, I understand. You don't own the GX9 anymore? Or GH5? I might sell it if I get a Fuji ILC; I recall you were convinced by the X-T4 over Panasonic. I'm not convinced to get a Sony.
Your comparison review helped me to consider third-party bright standard zoom lens which is suitable for my a7s! Thank you. I'm going to buy SIGMA one: little bit smoother bokeh and 24mm wide angle. Does SIGMA perform macro capabilities even at 70mm?
Hi, I’ve now watched this video 4 times, I’ve just sold my Sony 24-105mm f/4, I was going to purchase the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art “but” now there’s a new kid on the block the Samyang/Rokinon 24-70mm f/2.8. Do you have any plans on doing a comparison between the Sigma and Samyang? Please help me out, Regards William
Just bought a used Panasonic G9 with 14-42mm and 45-150mm Lumix zooms (until I get the A IIIS). What lenses please? Will the Sigma work on the G9 with an adapter. Doing mostly video. Thanks again. I have been watching your chan today for hours.
I sold my 24-70gm and got the sigma for my a7R4 simply because sigma is way to sharp and resolves 61mpx way better than 24-70GM, may be GM has a litle litle better AF, but anyway sigma is a better choice for hi mpx sensors! Thanks for the review!
@@TheHybridShooter As does the 70-200GM, i also got tamron 70-180 instead of 70-200GM, and again, tamron way too sharp and AF is faster, for half price and weight, only one important thing is missing is OSS
I don't think so. 70-200mm GM is completely different case, that one is extremely sharp, sharper than the Tamron. Lack of OIS above 70mm is instant deal breaker for me, GM is IMO worth the extra price and weight.
I have Tamron and noticing green hue on all pictures I take with it. Always have to correct colors in post, even when properly white balanced. Going to replace it with Sigma.
I haven't looked through all the comments, but it seems clear to me at 6:18 (70mm comparison) that the Tamron lens was focussed forward of the subject. I imagine that if both lenses had been properly in focus it would be easier to compare them. I don't say this just because the Tamron looks soft. look also at the background!
No. It is just softer. I always take multiple shots using both AF and MF, it is not misfocused. You can take a look at other reviews which confirm that Tamron is softer towards the long end.
Thanks for the quick response, how do you explain that the wooden furniture in the background is so much more out of focus, the depth of field should not be shallower with the Tamron
I have the sigma and its heavy and big which is not a issue except when your wielding it around and don't want to bonk anything.. its like a Thor hammer.. but its great!
I Will have to buy the Sigma for my A7iii. I also used your link to buy the Luminar, but when I edit at picture the picture looses the shadows when I export?? The black crushes 🤔 can you help me with that? Thanks for all your great videos 🙏
I'm not sure what causes that, I remember that it was supposed to be fixed about 2 years ago and I haven't had any issues. They have good customer supports, so you can try send them an e-mail.
@@TheHybridShooter thank you 💪🙏 I will contact them, maybe I missed something, I am a lightroom user and have not spent much time with the new Luminar yet ☺️
Wow this video couldn't have come at a better time.. I'm leaning towards the Sigma for the extra 4mm on the wide end and made in Japan (quality) before watching this video.
Tamron 17-28mm took my heart. But I was reading sigma sells kits to change the mount type from E to L... So you're not stuck with the same brand camera for ur best upgrade that took more than my heart lol I should've went with sigma 12-24 instead
Image Quality is pretty much the same and it basically comes down to if you want to pay more $ for that extra 4mm & premium build. I went with tamron mostly because I have other lenses for wider shots. Either way I love your videos! Thanks for sharing :)
You're welcome! Sigma is still optically superior in "extreme" situations, but I generally agree. I also have 24mm GM, but I want to avoid lens changing outdoors as much as possible.
The Hybrid Shooter you’re def. right! You put a lot of work in going through the ins and outs and various edge cases. I trust your line of thinking more than mine :) - I’m saving up for that Sigma 100-400. you should check that out if you haven’t already! I would love to see your feedback on that one day
i own both.. the main problem still that variable aperture thing... it gets darken when changin focal length which u must constantly change other setup like ISO / shutter speed
For me the Sigma was way sharper and very noticeable at 70mm. Tamron is terrible at f2.8 70-75mm. Unacceptable imo. Sigma is near prime level sharp across the zoom range.
@@TheHybridShooter At f2.8 images can be very soft. Stop down to f4 or 5.6 excellent sharpness. But very disappointed at f2.8. I have the Tamron and will replace with Sigma.
That is not a matter of opinion. The weight is adequate for 24-70mm F2.8 full frame lens, so it might be too heavy for you, but not too heavy for what it is.
I literally said that it is not a matter of opinion in general terms. Your comment didn't specify what you meant, so I am definitely not the one who "has to give my head a shake lol".
its weight is almost the same as Sony's 24-70 GM 886grms, Sigma's 850gr and yes Tamron is lighter by about 550grams... so 300 grms heavier... but paid off with more sharpness and 11 blade aperture...

Great comparison as usual... When you say both of these lenses have "linear response" for focusing, it means that (in manual focusing) for a given distance, no matter speed you go to turn the ring it will go at the same point ? (if I want to put a follow focus on it for exemple)
Thank you, yes, it is not speed sensitive.
Thanks for this video, sigma ticks the boxes for me. Would this be a significant upgrade from the Sony 24-70f4 I currently have?
Yes, it would be a huge upgrade.
Did you need to calibrate sigma or was it good straight from the box?
There is nothing to calibrate on mirrorless cameras. That was only issues with DSLR cameras because of the inconsistent distance between the sensor and focusing module.
@@TheHybridShooter I'm just switching to mirrorless from nikon dslr and I didn't know that, thank you for clearing this out for me:)
I have the GH5, but no M43 lenses.
Which is faster in focus speed Sigma 24 - 70mm vs Tamron 28 75 mm for video?
Basically the same.
Do they support steadyshot?
Im planning to buy zv-e1 and i want a lens works with dynamic steadyshot
Yes.
Your comparison review helped me to consider third-party bright standard zoom lens which is suitable for my a7s! Thank you.
I'm going to buy SIGMA one: little bit smoother bokeh and 24mm wide angle.
Does SIGMA perform macro capabilities even at 70mm?
You're welcome! Yes, it still has 1:4 magnification at 70mm.
@@TheHybridShooter
Thank you for letting me know!
Hello) What lens did you use to film this indoor video(03:10 for example)? Thank you
I think that it was Fujifilm 50mm F1.0.
Hi,
I’ve now watched this video 4 times, I’ve just sold my Sony 24-105mm f/4, I was going to purchase the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art “but” now there’s a new kid on the block the Samyang/Rokinon 24-70mm f/2.8.
Do you have any plans on doing a comparison between the Sigma and Samyang?
Please help me out,
Regards
William
I will probably make a review but not anytime soon.
@@TheHybridShooter 👍🏻
Just bought a used Panasonic G9 with 14-42mm and 45-150mm Lumix zooms (until I get the A IIIS).
What lenses please? Will the Sigma work on the G9 with an adapter. Doing mostly video. Thanks again.
I have been watching your chan today for hours.
Depends on what you intend to shoot and your budget.
@@TheHybridShooter under 2K and doing video indoors and out. Slow action, product reviews and people. Thanks again.
Hi, on one of the footage from Tamton you wrote (OSS on/ OSS of). How you turn it on ? I cannot find it anywhere:/
That is a mistake, it should have been just StedyShot, not OSS.
@@TheHybridShooter ok, so anyway. I didn’t know about stadyshot neither. Does it influence in video quality? I’ve never used it
@@CARabinVideography That is Sony's name for IBIS, so yes it definitely does.
Great review thank you for doing it. My sigma arrives on Monday.
I sold my 24-70gm and got the sigma for my a7R4 simply because sigma is way to sharp and resolves 61mpx way better than 24-70GM, may be GM has a litle litle better AF, but anyway sigma is a better choice for hi mpx sensors! Thanks for the review!
You're welcome, I agree, 24-70mm GM really needs Mk II version.
@@TheHybridShooter my copy wasnt that good, and thats a problem for a lot of people with 70-200 gm, backfocusing and lack of sharpness
@@TheHybridShooter Did you try 70-200 on a7r4? it doesn't resolve hi megapixel sensor as does the tamron for sure
can I use this sigma lens on nikon Z 7 mark 2 ???
No, there is no Z-mount version.
greetings from Greece!
i've heard that Sigma 24-70mm came dusty very quick from inside i mean, is it true?
There is some amount of dust in my copy from 7/2020, but it is not critical.
I have Tamron and noticing green hue on all pictures I take with it. Always have to correct colors in post, even when properly white balanced. Going to replace it with Sigma.
What camera are you using it with?
@@judyjackson7321 Obviously, because it is not as sharp... It's not "more out of focus", the lens just renders less texture.
Which version of Luminar are you using?
@@TheHybridShooter Luminar 4 ☺️
@@TheHybridShooter it looks like a million in the program but the exported pictures have lost all details in the blacks.
Chose tamron cause of weight. For a heavy traveler every gram counts. Awesome video!
Thank you!
Thanks for that review, it was very useful!!!!
Always my pleasure!
Best review yet. Thanks!
Thank you!
TOP TEST ..thats what i want to see! Keep on going
Thank you!
Liked and subscribed after seen a lot of comparison videos.. great review
Thank you! I appreciate it.
Thanks for that video!
I hesitated between the Sony 24-70 GM and the Sigma. I think the sigma is better for its price! 😄
Just picked this up! Beast of a lens!
What lens did you get? 🤔
@@jespero94 The Sigma 24-70 F2.8!
@@danieltan9999 awesome!
+1 for the Tamron, it's a bit cheaper and a bit more popular, but if money isn't an issue, Sigma is a great choice too.
Does the Tamron lens really have OSS? Or you just wrote the wrong word OSS which should be IBIS?
It should have been steady shot, which is Sony's name for IBIS.
@@TheHybridShooter Okay then, so the video sample mean the Tamron lens is not stabilized right? But it's the IBIS of the A7iii body
yes.
@@TheHybridShooter Thank you,
Keep up the good work 👍 I love your channel
I have heard about a dust problem of the Sigma (dust getting behind the front element)... did you experience anything like that in your test?
This copy is only a couple of weeks old, so no yet.
@@TheHybridShooter what about now? any dust?
excellent video to watch!
Thank you!
Great review!
Hello bro, great, helpfull reviews, greetings from Poland.
Thank you!
nice comparison!
Thank you!
too many sigma have the dust problem, a big mistake by Sigma, I don't know whether to choose the new Tamron G2 or the Samyang 24-70
It has been fixed in later copies.
@@TheHybridShooter really? Do u know the serial number?
Welcome to Ninh Kieu night market in Vietnam!
If you can only choose one, which one is your choice ?
Sigma!
super video man
Thank you!
Hi bro, i see one picture in Viet Nam, Ninh Kieu Market. Wellcome to VietNam. Great review!!!
Thank you!
I couldn't tell which one is better because both looks amazing.
Wow this video couldn't have come at a better time.. I'm leaning towards the Sigma for the extra 4mm on the wide end and made in Japan (quality) before watching this video.
I like the path Panasonic took with their 20-60mm. You really notice a couple of mm at the wide end
I like the focal range, but there are some optical compromises.
Went for Sigma, because for me the 24mm vs 28mm makes a huge difference when only carrying one lens around.
amazing comparison. Sigma will be better for me :)
I would love to see your feedback on that one day
The Tamron which I own wins for me simply because as stated in the video it’s smaller, lighter and cheaper.
Yeah, it depends on the preferences and compromises.
Budget wise Tamron is good
Tamron 28-200 pretty much gives you 28-70 2.8-4 and 70-200 4-5.6 at a lower cost. I'd get the Sigma and 28-200.
No, it certainly doesn’t.
i own both.. the main problem still that variable aperture thing... it gets darken when changin focal length which u must constantly change other setup like ISO / shutter speed
For me the Sigma was way sharper and very noticeable at 70mm. Tamron is terrible at f2.8 70-75mm. Unacceptable imo.
Sigma is near prime level sharp across the zoom range.
Tamron is definitely not terrible at the long end, that is still outstanding sharpness around 75mm. Sigma is perfect, Tamron is very good.
@@TheHybridShooter At f2.8 images can be very soft. Stop down to f4 or 5.6 excellent sharpness. But very disappointed at f2.8. I have the Tamron and will replace with Sigma.
I disagree, I am still very happy with the sharpness at F2.8. The fact that it can't match Sigma definitely doesn't mean that it is soft.
Great!
Sir,
always clear with ur review
50-50 is not option
Tamron !!!!!!
The sigma is just too heavy. Personal opinion
That is not a matter of opinion. The weight is adequate for 24-70mm F2.8 full frame lens, so it might be too heavy for you, but not too heavy for what it is.
The Hybrid Shooter I literally said it was my personal opinion in my original comment. You need to give your head a shake lol
First comment!
Congratulations!
