  • This is the tenth in the series "Strange Tales Told by a Dubliner". This story represents a foray into early medieval Ireland. In the world of the 6th-century bards or professional poets, Christianity and Druidism exist uneasily side by side. Seanchán Torpéist, the chief poet of Ireland, is challenged by Guaire, king of Connacht, to find a lost epic about the pagan heroes of the past, the Táin Bó Cuailgne. He searches Ireland and Gaelic Scotland for it without success, but a helpful monster (torpéist) tells him that the last storyteller who knew it, Fearghus Mac Róich, is dead. He must call upon Ireland's holiest saints to raise this man from the dead and get him to dictate the story to him.
The story contains the opening paragraph from the Táin recited in Old Irish twice. The listener need not understand this to follow the story.
