    Aziraphale: “We should oversee him as a nanny and a gardener”
    Crowley, who has been taking care of plants for who knows how long: “I’ll be the nanny.”

    • @stellar783
      @stellar783 5 років тому +315

      Fact is, it’s based of the movie the omen where the nanny to the antichrist arrives as a devil in disguise after the death of the first nanny. Sure, there were probably no nanny deaths in good omens, thankfully, but they still went with a similar touch.

    I didn't interpret Crowley's shoving Aziraphale against the wall as anger so much as fear. Unlike in the church scene, where there's no way to pass that action off as demonic, in the modern day Aziraphale labeling his actions as 'nice' means he loses all demonic credit in the eyes of anyone watching, because an angel approves of what he's done. The violence is to put him back in 'demonic' territory, assuring anyone watching that he's not having a tender moment with the angel, nope, nothing to see here. It also gets Aziraphale to shut the hell up and watch what he says in public.
    You'll note Aziraphale is startled, but not at all afraid of Crowley, because despite the surface violence of the action Crowley isn't hurting him, the 'slam' is gentle enough that his head doesn't hit the wall. Contrast Uriel doing the same thing later on. Context and trust is everything. They've been around each other long enough for Aziraphale to instinctively know that Crowley isn't going for the throat, he's quite relaxed even if he's taken off guard. He's not even trying to get away, which means it really doesn't occur to him that Crowley might discorporate him just to prove a point.

    • @TheNamelessNarrator
      @TheNamelessNarrator 5 років тому +231

      I think Crowley had a fear for a lot of it that if he let more of his kindness show without even realizing it then he could put himself at risk of true death, since a kind demon has no use in Hell.

    1. In the book, Crowley looks like a young man with dark hair who wears good suits. In the show he looks like a middle-aged man with red hair who wears whatever you wish to call that.
    2. In the book, Crowley lives in a white flat, with a white leather sofa, plants throughout, and a computer that he upgrades every few months. In the show, he lives in a black flat filled with some kind of miasma, all the plants are in one room, and he owns a ...throne... with a desk to match. In both, he owns the original sketch of the Mona Lisa.
    3. In the book, he has a bookcase, and all his books are in alphabetical order. In the show, he doesn't read books, though he has one on astronomy.
    4. In the book, Adam has an older sibling. In the show, he is an only child.
    I think that most of the other major differences have been covered in the previous 400+ comments.

      I love the way Crowley's flat is described in the book, but it's probably good they did something else with it in the show, not just to be more modern, but because HEAVEN has an all white design in the show. Can you imagine the potential fan theories about Crowley pining for Heaven with his all white flat if they'd gone with that in the show? Probably too distracting. Though interesting, to be sure.

      The book just doesn't treat the reader like an idiot. For example, the book just describes a war correspondent that's very successful because wherever she goes, a war breaks out. And you know who that is. It doesn't need to be so in-your-face.
      I still love the series though. The book has better story and humor, but the series has David and Michael's chemistry. I think the two complement each other in a nice way.

    I didn't really feel like the part where Satan really showed up really did much. He was so huge and scary and defeated in 5 seconds. I didn't like how Satan was all father-figure like. It really felt like he was going to ground his kid.
    I liked it slightly better in the book where it was less 'Adam defies his father by saying "You're not my dad"' and more emphasis on Adam just changing all of existance.
    But I generally did like the series quite a lot.

      @@wardabatool717 not really. I mean if they WERE the gardener and Nanny in the book, and by that logic, the tutors as well, there are then two things in the book that don't make sense. If Crowley and Aziraphale are both living in Warlock's house, why do they meet at public museums and loud CONCERTS and crowded buses to talk? A big house like that, both of them there, and you're telling me there's not one spare corner they could compare notes? They need to go OUT to talk? Also, why would Aziraphale call HIMSELF "my little team," and not take full credit for influencing Warlock? And if Book!Crowley was the Nanny where did he get a dog named Rover from? Crowley can barely keep his temper with houseplants, we know he dislikes horses, and he has a DOG randomly? I don't buy it. Also I'm fairly certain Gaiman has confirmed that originally he and prachett weren't thinking of the Nanny as Crowley in disguise when they wrote the book, but it came into the adaptations because it's funnier if it's literally him.

      It isn't obvious in the book. Moreover, there's even a phrase that the nanny and the gardener left being much surprised, and were replaced by the two teachers. So, thinking logically, it sounds silly that A and C engaged some people/creatures when they themselves could have been under surveillance of their headoffices, but the book has it like this. Probably the authors tried to change it, but a phrase from a previous version remained unnoticed.

As I do when meeting someone who's obviously British, I commented that in my youth I'd spent a couple of years living in England (instead of America), in a little place called Peppard Common, north of Reading. Mr. Pratchett was the only person I've ever met who knew it. Years, and many readings of "Good Omens" later I came to imagine Lower Tadfield looked a lot like where I'd lived, especially the chalk pit. (And yes, Peppard Common is in Oxfordshire.)

    Yall forgot to include the entirety of Crowley mourning his husband's discorporation 'cause he thought Aziraphale died (maybe because he thought it was hellfire). Which includes the whole, "SOMEBODY KILLED MY BESTFRIEND!" line, and the whole "giving up and getting drunk at a local diner" scene.
    Loved that, thank God they scooted that into the mini-series...

    While the nanny and the gardener were never EXPLICITLY called out as being A & C in disguise in the books, I always read it that way, even before the movie came out. The nanny and gardener were so comically good and evil, and so perfectly fashioned for their role that it was kind of hard to imagine that they were actual people. Most people in the book are a bit naff.

  • @heathersanders5592

    Another big one is Aziraphale wasn't as whiny in the book and he and Crowley were much more open about their friendship, they weren't constantly trying to hide it.

    • @lovetolovefairytales
      @lovetolovefairytales 4 роки тому +1

      Well they had to add drama somehow. Also, they were a LITTLE angsty about their friendship in the book, like when Aziraphale wants to call Crowley when he works out who the Antichrist is but worries for several hours (if I remember correctly) that it would be "wrong" to do so. I think the only version their friendship was completely chill and angst free in was the radio play. They literally didn't worry about getting caught at all (except for one line about "would your side give me assylum/Ha nope, yours?/nope, sorry dear") and it's kinda cute how calm they are about it.

      cai I've done waaaaay too much reasearch on this and it really depends on which specific religion one practices. Some say archangels are below all the other specific ones with the normal angels (the two terms being practically interchangeable), whereas others have them right at the top, only second to god.

      In the book, there were four hells angels that rode with the original horsemen and became the "other" four horsemen. When they were cut from the tv show, it did not make sense for them to be included in the relevant prophecy. I cannot remember if "three as two..." bit was in the book but it is an accurate representation of shadwell et al.

    Interesting fact: when you see the escalator scene, you can see both aziraphale and Crowley walking on water. They both have faith. Not only that, focus on how Crowley sinks in the water. Since he’s a demon he’s lost faith. But for aziraphale he’s always have faith. It’s just like how in the Bible Jesus is walking on water.
    Just thought that was interesting uwu

    • @lovetolovefairytales
      @lovetolovefairytales 4 роки тому +1

      They probably weren't though. Aziraphale makes it fairly clear he's not the gardener by saying his "team" is responsible for Warlock's being "too normal" and he does it in a corrective manner after saying "my influence". If it was him, he wouldn't have needed to correct himself. And while Crowley had a big part in that Nanny getting hired, as he even considered hurricaning her competition for the job away like the Nannies in Mary Poppins, he doesn't seem to literally BE her in the book. She has a different character/personality from him as well as a big dog (Crowley isn't shown as being a "pet person") that followed her everywhere. I figured she was just some random Satanist Crowley hired in the book.

    • @emilypillow3407
      @emilypillow3407 5 років тому +6

      Aziraphale literally credits Warlock's upbringing as the good influence of his "little team". Very much implied that nanny, gardener and the tutors were people under their employ, and that Crowley and Aziraphale watched from the sidelines.

    • @lovetolovefairytales
      @lovetolovefairytales 4 роки тому

      If Crowley was the Nanny in the book though, where did he get that random big dog the Nanny owns that we never see again after she leaves? And couldn't he and Aziraphale meet up in Warlock's house to talk if they were both working there, instead of on buses and in cafeterias? It doesn't make sense in book!universe.
