I knew Art fairly well and he was a very nice and humble guy. He had incredible hand speed especially using traditional grip and would show anyone the practice techniques he used to build that speed. Two things I recall was that 1. He ALWAYS had a finger exerciser in one hand or the other 2. He said you could get in double the practice for each hand by working them together slamming as opposed to working the left hand and then the right hand.
"...Art also has a vast background in jazz with many notable musicians. Art has performed with Jack Wilkins (Buddy Rich Band), Shirley Scott (John Coltrane, Bill Cosby), Sal Salvador (Stan Kenton), Phil Woods (Benny Goodman), Stanley Turrentine (Max Roach, Ray Charles) and others." -www.drummerworld.com/wishlistdrummers/Art_Verdi.html Just for your information.
Though I'm a big Art Verdi fan (his speed dedication is AMAZING), I should say some things I've noticed. First, we have many little fragments of different days and performances here. Someone could watch this and think "look! This guy was tireless!" wrong, he could not play all these things for 10 minutes in a row like Buddy Rich did SO MANY times during his lifetime.
Second, Buddy usually did transitions between snare to floor tom really fast and hitting a high number of single strokes per drum in the process. Art does not do it. His transitions come from the tom and then he goes down to the snare. This is easier than Buddy's - try it at home... its a matter of coordination. Its harder to make your arms when paralled one to another "travel" empty distances when going from the snare to the floor tom.. snare-floor-snare-floor and so forth.
As a drummer myself, I don't quite get this whole wave of jealous drummers coming over here to slam such a technically amazing drummer as Art Verdi. His speed moving around a kit actually resembles me of Buddy Rich (and thats very rare). I 'd love to see some of these dickheads attempt this stuff as they would fail miserably. Art moves extremely fast, his executions are clean and hes able to mix up many different rudiments into his playing. If thats not technical proficiency I dunno what it is.
Art is a former speed drumming world champion. All of those guys are called World's Fastest Drummer Champ, because the official name for speed drumming championships is World's Fastest Drummer or WFD. Art held the world record for nearly 2 years before Mangini. Verdi plays over 150 gigs a year with some of the top jazz musicians in the world. This is a practice video released by someone else. This video displays practice and is not a musicality display. Everything said here is legit.
uahuaaa Mike Mangini could not even think of doing this. The unique thing he knows to do is his 1200 ridiculous record - ridiculous technique. No volume, no power just "plug yourself in electricity" and you're done. This is ridiculous dexterity. Mangini is not even close. Open your eyes.
Art Verdi is ridiculously fast and LOUD. No one is as fast using traditional grip (maybe Buddy). Thrash/Death drummer couldn't stand a candle to this guy (he plays at full speed for more than 1 minute non-stop. Art is ridiculous).
A lot of people are criticising Art for just being a speed merchant. These vids are of him practising singles - so of course it's all about speed.... But he is a very accomplished drummer. Trouble is, google for him and all you get is stuff about his speed records and 'worlds fastest drummer'. That's the trouble with going for these competitions, I suppose... you get a reputation for being a speed freak that displaces everything else.
Yes kid, people try to judge many things. It doesn't mean they can, it just means they're ignorant. Yes, you can judge all the movies you want. But it still won't be any more than the rantings of a teenage fool, arrogant enough to think he has a real thought. When you focus silliness towards those with thoughts, you waste their time. You should really practice more and talk less. Your hero Mangini likes Art. Maybe you should ask him why. And if tells you, actually try to listen.
Look for Mangini's "traditional grip" single strokes' try and compare to THIS - I just laugh myt ass off. Art destroys Mangini. A whole lot more impressive.
seeing as how he is practicing for being the FASTEST drummer I wouldnt expect him to be that dynamic. Im pretty sure he is better than you people especially if he has played with ray charles and all those other people.
Thats considerably harder to do according to my own experience on a drum kit. Having said that, Art is still a BEAST. His speed, POWER!, Gladstone technique and stamina are astonishing. I've always been a fan. Its a good distraction from Buddy's unfortunate departure from this world... (now hes possibly entertaining "God" and - possibly - teaching him how to play the drums. hehe).
it's not double speed. when you play jazz stuff, toms are usually tight like that. if you think this is double speed, then maybe check out buddy rich because everything he does is for real.
Still the only drummer that I've ever seen that actually, *physically* looks similart to Buddy Rich when he plays. The body postures, size, even in the face a bit (use your imagination), and, of course, that super-human speed! It's too bad the sound quality is so sh*tty, and that that cymbal is in the way of the snare drum. Even still, this video never fails to impress and inspire me.
What's up with people vouching for Joey as the fastest drummer? Joey may be better than me at the drums, but he isn't the fastest out there. Joey isn't all that creative when it comes to drums either. There's not really a whole lot of diversity in his drumming. Take the drum solo where we was on the raised platform. Shit. It was just a bunch of double bass and tom rolls. He's good, but he's not the "best". No musician is the best and any decent musician would know that.
anyone that commented on how he didn't accent his shit or anything are all awful. how can you critique him like that? do you see his single stroke rolls? any of you wannabe drummers out there probably can't double stroke twice as slow with that much precision.
This scopion is just another of the tragically hip who posts cool videos of Townsley and Chambers to show how plugged in he is when he is obviously unaware that both guys love Art's playing...the very guy he slams here...oops. Dude if you hate this guy so much, why do you constantly troll his videos?
he's fast as hell but has like no fucking beat going...it doesn't sound shitty cuzza the room, it sounds shitty cuz he isn't doing anything except going fast...going 30000000000 bpm on a snare doesn't make you good...applying it to a beat and in a fill or something does...it's fucking annoying to even listen to AAHHH haha!!
Hah, I remember watching this video back in the early 2000s and being absolutely blown. It was the first time I'd seen such high speed.
I knew Art fairly well and he was a very nice and humble guy. He had incredible hand speed especially using traditional grip and would show anyone the practice techniques he used to build that speed. Two things I recall was that

....seriously we just went over this. This guy has the world record and has been holding it for two years. He's not speeding up shit

Dammmm! What the hell is he doing? Trying to have a brain-annerism!!

Richard Nixon on drums?
Hahahahaha! Sounds like an old air compressor I used to have. LOL. Good job dude.

what about mike mangini for hands and tim waterson for feet? ( i know that art verdi isnt going for a feet record....but still)

Art has a record of 220 single strokes in 10 seconds (that would be more than 1.300 in a minute... an absurd).
His bare knee bothers me, BUT he is an excellent drummer and Speedy, Can he drum up more gigs for the rest of us drummers?
no offence to anyone , but is nothinf but noise.Sure hes fast, but whats speed when the durmmer sounds like shit.
@jetfreak4 I dont think being able to hit all the drums in rapid succession makes you as good as Buddy Rich
he is boring... arghhhhhhhhhh this is not for me to be a good drummer...he is not versatile and fresh
Does this guy always where the same outfit when he practices? (this is across multiple days...)
maybe he purposefully did that for the vid? to keep it consistent or something
Respect. 5 stars....
All you crude haters need to be moderated.
this is two videos that are 14 minutes long so this guy is slow
He doesn't drum bad it's just that speed is useless in music.
@Nigrantis Well, that ain't completely true. I think you can be sure he can do some pretty relaxed 32' notes :)
im only nineteen and my hairline's faster than his
okay... so who gave the epileptic a pair of drumsticks?
bet your neigbours love you hahaha good stuff
"Pre arm workout, dude."
WOOOOOOW
vary faaaaast. XD
it's not double speed. when you play jazz stuff, toms are usually tight like that. if you think this is double speed, then maybe check out buddy rich because everything he does is for real.
Now this is what I call ear rape
@jeffreythedrumma yes he did, lol
i saw another fastest drummer, some kid on a little pad, was nothing compared to this
Because it sounds horrible?
hahahaha. fucking nice
Wat the hell man!
Fuck, i would hate to be his neighbor o.0, Now lets hear some eigth notes lol

LOL
wtf?
UOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
clean you house, wear some clean clothes.
LOL
@VoltageEntertainment It was recorded one month before I went into the swedish army for a year
Your most excellent playing is so intense that it literally takes my breath away!! All of your videos are, by far, my favorites!!
that was really fast jazz , old school of fast drumming improvisation
He got so fast from drinking that 3&1 oil on top of his dresser!
WOW1 I thought I was fast. Kudos Art. You are the fastest I've seen.
Very good .. but buddy rich was way faster
this sounds like when I get on my buddy's drum set and just beat the hell out of it.... He's way faster than me...but just as shitty...lol
That was incredible!!!
Now lets see him lay down a groove.

I'm pretty sure Gary Thomas is faster than this.

Jesus Christ...this is guy is as good as Buddy Rich.
he is not the world fastest drumer mike mangini is it

Hes fast, but it doesn't really sound good.
Ok, you go pick up some drumsticks. Either that, or shut up.
Holds two titles: Fastest & Dullest.
