    One problem, you needed to replay the shot more! ha, such a shot! Another tip for gully shooting is I make a landmark where I took the shot from so you can also work out a reverse path, can be big help in thicker scrub. Cheers mate

    650m shot taken on a large game animal known to absorb bullets well. It would have immediately been lost it in that country if the shot placement was off. And it appears you don't take the meat out? Perhaps the reason that stag was even there is that others have glassed it from a similar distance and figured (1) too risky a shot, and (2) too hard a job to get all the meat out from that location, and so let it live another day. I know they're introduced/pests etc, but surely a voluntary ethic amongst Sambar hunters of trying to recover substantially all of the meat means more deer and better hunting for everyone?

    • @ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
      @ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Sebastion thanks for taking the time to express your thoughts. My opinion on some or your view differ however so Ill take the time to respond.
      Would you shoot a stag @ 200yds with a 300wm ?
      My rifle/ammo combo has the same energy @ 640yds as the 300wm 200gn @ 200yds, so although I agree Sambar are tough and can absorb bullets well there are not invisible either.
      The statement of losing the stag immediately from that distance in that country if the shot placement was off is impossible to predict but for arguments sake the country was quite open so I may have been able to shoot him again quite easily and extremely steep so any wound would of caused him to move down almost certainty., but who knows because that didnt happen he was dead the second he was hit, didnt twitch a leg! I agree that someone may have seen him and said too risky for a shot, but what is risky to me isnt always risky to you or another hunter so what is risky? a deliberate analyzed confident long range shot from a competent rifleman or a off hand moving animal shot @ 100yds from a hunter that gets out a couple times a year? For me knowing my abilities and my equipment there was little to no risk in taking this shot.
      The recovery of meat is always a conscious dilemma but for remote style pack in hunts its not a viable option so would you rather no one shoots deer that far back in and just let the government cull them from choppers?

    • @sebastionbach
      @sebastionbach 3 роки тому

      @@ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventuresThanks for the civil response. Agree we can't say whether or not it would have been lost. If you're confidently and regularly hitting within vitals at that range (and your results speak for themselves), then I take your point around ethical shooting being all relative to the shooters skill. To your point on the meat, it appears some or most of your backpacking hunt videos are trophy hunts with either only the head or backstraps taken. I acknowledge you're in tough country and you've done the work to get there, but yes, I would rather someone who intends on only taking the head to not shoot a stag and leave it to get bigger for someone who is willing to do the work and make full use of the animal. The animal's death outcomes are not just (1) you shooting it, or (2) heli culling. The other is that someone who is willing to make use of the meat kills it. I'm sure many shooters pass up large stags in hard to access areas for that reason. In a way, you're playing by a different rule set to other Sambar hunters. You would have seen US hunting shows where they spend the 2-3 days hiking in and out from downed game to extract the meat. Why shouldn't we honor the animals death in that way as well? Even the ADA's "Fair Chase Hunting" guidelines say "Don’t waste. If you are going to take an animal, it is your responsibility to make full use of it. If you can’t do this, should you really be taking the shot?" and "Being a trophy hunter does not excuse you from also recovering and using the meat."
      The ADA recognize that our social license to hunt is in part based on the premise we use the meat. In my view, that social license will eventually be challenged in this country, and publishing videos endorsing head-hunting won't help the cause. I doubt we'll agree on this, but I think it's a good discussion to have.

    • @ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures
      @ZebrasSambarhuntingAdventures  3 роки тому

      @@sebastionbach I can only assume you don't backpack hunt? I know of no one that recovers meat from the areas I hunt. I know a lot of people hunting these areas. So therefore you would have no deer shot in these areas by hunters which would inevitably end in culls.
      The Americans recover meat as part of their Laws requirements of Fish and Game . meat must be presented and weighed along with other details. I know this as I've hunted both Canada and Alaska.
      Australia has guide lines of an organisation or codes of ethics which leave it up to the individual to make a conscious decision what to do. I doubt our government will ever stop hunting of deer because of hunters not utilising the meat. They are more than happy to cull them from the air with no utilisation of the animals what's so ever, trophy or meat. I don't hide from the fact that I trophy hunt stags, what you don't understand is I let more go than what I pull the trigger on.
