Thank you for putting up this video. Very informative video for a beginner like me. Not only in terms of where to look for deer, but also on equipment, water management, and other hunters, cold, dangers of the country (live in Victoria as well), and disappointment. I know that I need to enjoy just being out there and be ready for probably seeing nothing on my first trips. And still not give up. Thanks again.
Thanks mate that’s a nice bit of the world you are hunting in. Shame no action for you . You do put in the hard yards. Thanks for a quality video and commentary. Till next time cheers. take it easy.
How longs a bit of string? I could go on for hours on this one! But the short answer is for Sambar personally I would recommend a solid 180gn projectile from a 30/06. This will give you enough gun for shots up to say 350m. If you limit your range to 250m you could comfortably use a 308w 7mm08 etc. Having said that any of the legal calibers will kill Sambar reliably at sensible distances if the shot is placed perfectly. Think like this if using small caliber count out running shots, rear end shots, long shots and hard angling shots. IMO one of the best calibres for stalking sambar is the 338w but the 300wm and 7mm rem mag are up there to. Its horses for courses no one would reliably shoot at distance with anything less than a 7mm rem mag and most would be running a 300RUM or bigger for 500m + but sambar have been shot dead at these ranges with 308w and even smaller calibers before. With sambar bigger is better but not if you cant accurately place your shot!!!
@@chrischerrington9340 rusa are smaller and a 243w would take care of them. Though it may not be legal in your state. 22 250 are usually capable of great accuracy so a neck or head shot would do the job if only hunting for meat
