Hello dear, this is great information for me because I'm planning to start planting more vegetables in my little garden including cucumbers, Thank you and many blessings♥♥♥🧡
Crazy warm during these Santa Ana winds in Orange County. I put some kitchen scraps in a raised bed in November and got 25 winter squash plants coming up. I took out most because I needed the room for onions. I left 2 plants for an experiment. They are looking so good and I have a “fruit” on one. Crazy!
I LOVE the tip of pre-warming the soil!! Seriously, I am this many years old and just heard that? How have I ever missed this - that's almost life changing! 😃 Fabulous and Thank you! PS - so jelly I am having to wait to catch up with you southern gardeners. Toe-tap, toe-tap, toe-tap.
Hi Ceecee - Glad that soil-warming tip hit the mark-it's a total game-changer! Sending some sunshine your way while you wait to catch up - you’ll be planting in no time!
If you want some early cucumbers Kim, there are some varieties out there that are short, quick cropping. I have sown some Polish/Ukraine native ones. London, UK Zone 9a. Not recommended obviously for colder climates, until later. Maybe look for Canadian varieties where you are but in a dry area. If i were to wait for 60f/ 15c at night, we would never have any squash in the UK! 50f/ 10 c is more than plenty. You just need to check the varieties local to you. They are more adapted to the climate that you are in. If you understand the variety you want to grow, then check the climate too and not just temps. If you live in a humid climate, then baking soil for seed is a better option to avoid fungus gnats. Also for humid areas, put a layer of vermiculite on top and don't spray the surface. Bottom water too to avoid dampening off. I also think if you have AC or radiators on, in winter, it plays a big part in drying off your plants, also inconsistent temps, when on a timer. Heat mats are great but be careful where you place them as on a South facing window it can cook them. Anyway, hope you are safe from the Hughes fires. Weather is crazy atm, with the deep low cold temps in Texas, etc. Not sure if you were aware but it developed in 200mph jet stream about to hit Ireland and UK as i type. West Ireland is set to have 100- 120mph winds and then cross the Scotland/England border. It is an extreme weather event. Met office only upped the status to a red alert lunchtime Thursday, hours before, When they knew about the 200mph jet stream earlier this week, which could have given people more time. Like with all weather events, i hope that it is minimalised as much as possible. Take care and stay safe!
Our frost dates this season set everything up for failure 🤦🏾♀️ first and last are supposed to be jan 4 and Feb 2.....instead we've been getting cold fronts since late November......and counting
I’m so sorry this season’s frost has been so unpredictable-it’s so frustrating when nature doesn’t play along. But your effort and resilience are what make you a great gardener. Even tough seasons teach valuable lessons, and you’re growing through this, too. Keep going-better days (and harvests) are ahead! You’ve got this! CK
It really depends on the temps where you are, but for cukes & squash, I usually start seeds about 3-4 weeks before the ideal temps hit (nights are consistently in the high 50’s to 60’s and days are in the 70-85°F range). For me, that's usually towards mid-late February! Keep me posted!
Hi there! I love your videos they are very informative and easy to follow (: I have a question - you say to take your seedlings off the heat mat after they germinate... does that go for all seedlings? Is this the only time you use a heat mat?
Thanks so much, Nicole! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos! Great question-yes, I usually only use a heat mat to speed up germination for cucurbits when the house is cooler in the winter. Once they germinate, I usually take them off since they grow quickly and don’t need the extra warmth. When the house is warmer (75°F+), cucurbits usually germinate just fine without one. Peppers and eggplants are a bit different-they really need that bottom heat to germinate well. Tomatoes can go either way. A heat mat can definitely help when the house is cooler in the winter. Tomatoes also grow slower than cucurbits, so the extra warmth can help them along. The main thing is to keep an eye on your seedlings and adjust heat mat use (for warm-weather seedlings) if you notice their growth slowing. Don’t be afraid to experiment-it’s all about trial and error, and you’ll totally get the hang of it. You’ve got this!

Yes, you can.Keith! Cucurbits like squash do really well direct seeded. Just make sure those outdoor temps are in the ideal germination range, as I mentioned in the video. I like to get a jumpstart with indoor seed starts, then direct seed more once the weather warms up. You’ll have a great time growing squash in your Smart Pot!

Ça donne envie de semer, mais il faut que j'attende encore un peu. Il fait encore trop froid dans ma région. Formidable, à bientôt 😊

In Southern California what month should we think of starting squash?

I’ve started flowers so far, broccoli/cauliflower/cabbage hasn’t germinated yet.
Great job! Keep an eye on them! Keep it up - Kim
