It's here! The next episode of "Could You Survive the Movies"! Quick note: the last 3 episodes of the show will be out starting Dec. 16th for FREE. It'll be the same schedule; an episode and BTS for free every Monday starting on the 16th. I really hope you're enjoying the series so far! One little bit of trivia is that I wanted to shoot every episode in the aspect ratio the original film was shot in. So this one is in anamorphic which is why the frame is more narrow than a usual UA-cam video. Ok, enjoy the show!
Jake you should be so proud of yourself. This is great. It's really well made, very entertaining and informative. Congratulations and I look forward to seeing more 😊👍
Yeah, when I saw that the Mad Max episode didn't get that many views (it got a lot, but not any insane amounts), I was sure CYSTM wouldn't turn into a series. Fortunately I was wrong.
THANK YOU for involving Captain D in this series. His is the greatest (and proportionately, LEAST known) youtube creator. I hope he gets a big bump in viewership from all these collaborations. he deserves it.
I _REALLY_ hope this brings a lot of people to Captain Disillusion's channel. He really deserves it! One of the best, highest production value channels on UA-cam.
Was a horrific way people died in that. I shudder to think what a 40 foot wave of the stuff would be like. On a side weird note, I wonder how good the plade smelt like after the nuke went off in Fallout 4.
Small detail in this brilliant episode: I absolutely LOVE that you added film grain to match the rough film stock in the original movie. Little details like that are AMAZING!
The cyclotron, which is the type of particle accelerator connected to the proton pack in the movies isn't that complex. To start, you need Hydrogen gas, because that is the source most if not all particle accelerators get the protons or electrons from. Remember H1 or Hydrogen 1 gas (Yes there are 3 types of hydrogen atoms) has 1 proton, and 1 electron, but 0 neutrons. The hydrogen gas is transferred to an ionization chamber, typically for something small like this, you might use a 2 stage ionization chamber. Meaning the first stage uses magnets to pull some of the electron out of the orbital shell, but the second stage is to confirm the ionization of the Hydrogen gas. This consists of a gas discharge tube, where hydrogen is fed through the left side, and contained in the glass tube while electricity flows from the bottom and shoots at high velocities across the tube to the top, knocking the electrons out of the hydrogens orbital shell. Then a negative electromagnet or magnet, pulls the protons towards it, while a positive electromagnet pushed them down to the center of the cyclotron. The cyclotron is a chamber typically made of a metal or any non conductive material. inside, there are 2, hollow, D shaped electrodes called "Dee's" which have a gap in the middle of the 2 electrodes. There is a lid on top of the chamber, and then 2 giant electromagnets are placed on the top and the bottom of the cyclotron. Those 2 electromagnets on the top and bottom stabilize the proton so it doesn't bounce around in the chamber. Keeping the chamber a vacuum is required, this prevents the protons colliding with air molecules and other bits of material and debris. Then you connect a RF oscillator (Radio Frequency Oscillator) that runs at 10MHz (10 Million Cycles or Oscillations per second) to the each electrode, so when 1 Dee is positively charged, the other is negatively charged. So when the proton is in the cyclotron, starting at the center, the proton is pulled towards the negatively charged Dee and repelled by the positive dee. This repeats until is spins fast enough and is shot out of the end of the Dee, out of the cyclotron.
Little nitpick about the proton packs: for accelerators 5MeV refers to the energy per particle, so a single proton hitting you would impart that amount of energy (enough to induce a nuclear reaction in a single atom). The total energy of the beam is that energy multiplied by the number of particles (or beam current / beam intensity). When you cross the streams it's the number of particles that grows, not the particle energy, so the beam would still be 5MeV, but at a higher intensity. Also you mention in the space of a few seconds that the protons would travel about 30cm, and that you can't see the beam. In fact the reason they would only travel a short distance in air is that they lose all their energy ionizing the air. Ions emit light when they recombine, so depending on the beam intensity you could see a (probably blue) glow.
Absolutely FANTASTIC! .. Captain D did his part brilliantly. I did wonder which GB character he would play. Well Done Everyone, can't wait to see the next episode.
Nice video, as always ! I just have one problem, 5 Mev is the energy of a single proton in your flux, so combining 3 flux will just make 3 time as much 5Mev proton, not 15Mev protons. And also 5Mev for a proton is not much so you won't have too much range, but it only takes 13.6ev max to ionize hydrogen so 5Mev protons are definitely in the ionizing radiation range and so are quite dangerous in big quantities. And speaking of quantity, you could have a 2kw flux of 5Mev protons wich would be visible because it woulld ionize the air, it would burn anything it crosses, and also would be a instantaneous cancer ray.
This show really reminds me of when I was young and watching all these blockbusters with my father, a physician. I always asked him wether all these crazy things were actually possible and most of the time he simply told me... no :D
just started and i'm already laughing. "i'm Jake and before i started busting ghosts, i had two loves of my life: science and movies." ah, yes, i can clearly see that paranormal exterminator is the next logical step...
I love that UA-cam now has Hollywood size production value... This is insane... Thank you Michael for creating Vsauce and making sure that Vsauce2 and Vsauce3 are doing great..
Absolutely love the video! Jake and CaptainD are both amazing! Edit: but oh my god, UA-cam Red does not care if the content creators are being nice and providing free episodes because they screw up the formatting. The video plays glitchy so you have to leave and come back, waiting for an ad each time, until you are lucky enough to not have an ad ruin the formatting.
It's crazy how the design for the Proton Packs was actually somewhat accurate. Also, I would love to see an entire movie with these three as the Ghostbusters.
8:39 I love how they said it like the reason they can’t film a giant on set is not because they don’t have a way to magnify a human but it’s because of the square cube law
I think the other problem you would find with marshmellow would be that it is not only viscous but it is also really sticky so worse than just flowing off the skin very slowly it would almost certainly immediately begin to congeal and stick to the skin as the skin is so much colder than it's melting point. Similar reason why sugar products are often responsible for the worst burns from accidental cooking spillages such as caramel or toffee.
One thing I think they missed is when the marshmallow exploded was the amount of air cooling it would receive when travelling from 34 meters in the air. Even for the ghostbusters on the roof in the movie they are a general 15 meters away from the marshmallow man and when it would explode the marshmallow would cool as it travelled through air pretty rapidly
The 'Kevin's video' and 'Sara's video' links in the description go to unrelated videos of theirs. 'The Card Game You Can (almost) Always Win' and 'Airpods PRO Unboxing'
Electron-Volts are a measure of the amount of energy each particle carries, so combining three 5MeV streams makes one 5MeV stream with three times the number of particles.
If you overlapped 3 proton streams that are 5MeV, you wouldn't get a stream that's 15MeV, you would increase the beam current not the beam energy. The beam would still be 5MeV.
Love the show. Just a slight remark. The protonic energy of three separate 5 MeV beams would be exactly the same as 3 combined... meaning still 5 MeV and not 15 MeV. The protons do not get accelerated from each other. In other words, you could remove the edited part at 8:12 to 8:20 since its wrong. Cheers!
I don’t get how this is a UA-cam original yet they aren’t showing up in my feed 🤔 However wonderful job on this one Jake! Very informative in a cool way!! 👍🏻
This video is not in my subscription box, UA-cam is actually mental. I'm paying for this and subscribed and I have to find it through recommended? Ridiculous.

Always happy for more Captain Disillusion content, no matter the form
He just released an extended version of his cameo in this episode on his channel! Rush over and check it out! It's AWESOME :D :D

@@nicosmind3 Lighten up, Francis.
Sorry to assume, but I feel like this is Jake's dream project and it makes me happy to think how thrilled he is to see it completed.
Yeah, when I saw that the Mad Max episode didn't get that many views (it got a lot, but not any insane amounts), I was sure CYSTM wouldn't turn into a series. Fortunately I was wrong.
Ilya Holt I think it wouldn’t been picked up if it wasn’t for UA-cam shifting their Originals strategy this year.

Never thought I'd see the glamorous set of Captain Disillusion in 2.39:1.

Great one guys! And that Captain Disillution cameo was amazing also.

I wish I had a time machine so that I could like this video one more time.
Could you explain how a Time Machine would help?
But if you liked it in the past, you wouldn't be able to like it again in the future.
We will wait with impatience! :)
If you overlapped 3 proton streams that are 5MeV, you wouldn't get a stream that's 15MeV, you would increase the beam current not the beam energy. The beam would still be 5MeV.
Would it be similar to a parallel circuit where the voltage doesn’t change but current does?
Would something else increase? Joules?
You just keep doing all my favorite movies. Do Tron next!
