I have both book and audio of How to think like a Roman Emperor. He narrates the book and it flows so beautifully. His voice is soothing and you sink in deep. Marvelous gentleman
I'm very surprised to hear that Donald thinks Marcus wasn't writing his meditations up to his death. I've always interpreted the final entry as the acceptance that his life would be coming to a close shortly. Either way, great conversation, probably my favorite of yours Chris.
I’ve listen tho Marcus Aurelius meditations on a loop. It is truly amazing how much insight he had on the human psyche. I liked how he called out some men for trying to act like women lol 😂
Be careful with is parenting advice. "I should not ask, how do I keep my child from dying, I should ask instead, how do I not care whether my child dies". Yikes. You don't want your son turning out like Commodus.
@Echo I missed that part, that's a good point. Although, when they make a movie about his most famous son and he's played by Joaquin Phoenix, you have to take a step back and ask what went wrong.

Maybe Fronto asked Marcus to check his grammar as a test? Perhaps he purposefully made mistakes to see if his apprentice would pick it up. It's just an angle I thought of.
In the past we had philosophers who were warriors, statesmen, religious sages and the like who through their life experiences philosophised their views of life to the masses. Sadly, we now have "thinkers" from toffee nosed backgrounds from universities who pretend to know philosophy but have none of the battle-hardened experiences of life philosophising for us. Unless one has battle hardened experiences of life and believe in God I don't take these modern day secular Godless philosopher wannabes seriously.
I doubt Marcus was actually madly in love with Fronto. There's one modern scholar who speculates they had a love affair but I think the evidence is very weak indeed and it's much more likely, as most historians assume, that Marcus is simply very effusive in expressing affectionate friendship. At one point, e.g., he compares his love for Fronto with the love he has for his own mother, not something you'd normally say to an actual lover. I think Marcus just loved his family and friends.

This passage might be read as evidence of romantic love between them but on the face of it Marcus appears to be, perhaps, responding to a sort of literary exercise. And, at least as I recall, Marcus and Fronto do show, in passing, that they also refer to affection for family members in terms that might seem quite effusive from our modern-day perspective.

I want to respect and learn from this guy but there's just a mental block around learning from someone who claims to study stoics very closely but is clearly over weigh and a glutton with food.. so you don't follow the stoic teachings... Ok
