    Many thanks for your lovely Video of Broadstairs, I was fortunate enough that my Grandparents moved there in the early 1960s, and they gave me some terrific Summer holidays, I can remember those holidays as if it was yesterday, It's always lovely to come back to and no visit is complete without a visit to Morellis 😊

    Broadstairs is just lovely and you have captured it so beautifully. Its charm and its antiquity, stole my heart immediately.
    I have lived in London for the past 60 or so years but I dream of seeing out my days in either Broadstairs or Folkestone. Yesterday, I was unexpectedly offered a wee social housing property in Folkestone, tucked just behind the stunningly beautiful Leas. The flat is somewhat tiny and nothing fancy, but hey, it just might be the new home for me - let's see.
    Thank you for the wonderful videos. They are charmingly lovely and beautiful beyond 🥰

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 роки тому +2

      Wow that would be so nice - London has changed so much over the last 60 years, it'll be nice to escape to the seaside. Folkestone would be great, and easily a bus ride to the other coastal towns for a day out. I can't wait for the lockdown to end so we can head out again.😀

    I stayed in a convalescent childrens home in Broadstairs in the 1960s. I was only 6 years old. One of the recollections is getting on the beach with acess through a small tunnel. I don't even know the name of the home I stayed in, but remember it was a huge place. Children slept in dormitory and we had pea and ham soup every night for supper !

      Hi, just did a little digging, and it sounds like you stayed at St Mary's Convalescent Home Broadstairs. I came across this - thanetonline.blogspot.com/2009/01/st-marys-convalescent-home-broadstairs.html - I hope your time there was okay, Broadstairs is a beautiful place, I hope you got to see the best of it. I use to go st. Stephens college in North Foreland (behind the lighthouse and Stella Maris ). Use to go to Stonebay for long walks and l loved every minute of it ❤️ lovely memories. I recall that the steps in NF that took you to Stone Bay were based on the famous 39 steps

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  2 роки тому

      Hi PA
      What an interesting fact, so I had a little dig about and I found this on wiki
      'John Buchan wrote The Thirty-Nine Steps while he was ill in bed with a duodenal ulcer, an illness which remained with him all his life. Buchan's son, William, later wrote that the name of the book originated when the author's daughter was counting the stairs at St Cuby, a private nursing home on Cliff Promenade in Broadstairs'
      So the book gets its name from those steps. Now I never knew that - Learn something new every day 😍
      Do you get a chance to get back at all? If I get a chance over the winter/spring I may pop down and put something together for the channel to fill in some of the gaps in my Kent Coast wanderings
      Anyway, take care, stay safe, stay well.
      Gary

      @@OurWorldForYou that is awesome. I haven’t been back to NF for a very long time. SSC closed in the 90s and I believe the land has been turned into exclusive houses? Not sure..

    I would spend two wks holiday there from mid July, 30 yrs ago, so I should be there now. There's nothing bad to say about the place and as you say, it's a throwback to a different time. Unfortunately, Rooks the butcher's is no longer open. Oh how I loved their apple turnovers.

      Hi, so glad you liked the video. It is a wonderful place, and doesn't seem to change much (I guess it does, but its heart remains the same). Such a shame about Rooks, it has left a hole in many a Kentish high street - another sad victim of the pandemic.
      We do need to head back, but we'll avoid the school holidays, to 'discover' a few more of Kent's hidden gems.
      Thanks for taking the time to comment; glad it brought back fond memories. I now can't stop thinking of apple turnovers 😋

      Hi Karen,
      It really is, and on our recent travels to Well & Salisbury, we found a link we either forgot about or just didn't know. The late Prime Minister Ted Heath (1970-1974) was born in Broadstairs and returned a few times. We spotted a couple of paintings and a photo of him in later life at Broadstairs.
      We want to pop back, but we'll avoid the peak of summer; it can get a little busy.

    "Down the hill to Broadstairs
    Have you ever gone
    On a Summer morning
    When the bright sun shone?
    John and I, and baby
    Went there yesterday
    In the sea to paddle
    On the sands to play.
    When we left St. Peter's
    Very gay were we;
    Baby in her carriage
    Dolly on her knee;
    John and I the horses
    Without whip or rein.
    Down the hill to Broadstairs,
    Swift as any train.
    Up the hill from Broadstairs
    Slowly did we go
    Singing like the sailors
    "With a Yo! heave ho!"
    Climbing up the hill-side,
    In the sun so hot;
    Tiread and very weary
    To the top we got.
    Back again at Broadstairs
    Someday we shall be:
    Building sandy castles
    Paddling in the sea.
