The big warehouse at the end is a matte painting by Michael Pangrazio. It's massive, painted on glass with the small area clear where the guy pushing the crated-up Ark was composted in. It remains on screen for a long time, which is unusual for a matte painting since the longer you look the more they seem fake. Pangrazio is that good. I had a large poster of it as a kid. It's a little sloppy up close, but it gains in quality if you step back. Too much detail would look fake he said. It took him three months to paint. I was like, "Jesus, this guy is determined" and then when he comes charging out on that horse I was like, "Well this shit just kicked into 5th gear" and during the entire chase scene I was like, "This is unbelievable!" What a ride! Lucas fully understood just what made the Saturday matinee hero of the the 30s and 40s so popular. Took that and translated it into a modern movie and it was instant success. Basically it's the same thing he did in creating Star Wars.
Listen out for the "Wilhelm Scream". You can hear it in your video at 19:12 as that German fella gets thrown out of the back of the truck and onto the bonnet of that car behind. Aaaaargh he goes. In some of those 50s movies the same scream was played multiple times. It is a good scream, to be fair. It was played in 'Die Hard - with a vengeance', 'The Fifth Element', 'Planet of the Apes (2001)', 'The Lord of the Rings (Two Towers)', 'The Pirates of the Caribbean', and many many more.

Romancing the Stone was basically a rip-off of Indiana Jones but for a rip-off it was really good and had a great cast. IMHO it doesn't reach the benchmark that Raiders of the Lost Ark set 3 years before it (I don't think I've seen a single action-adventure movie that has).

A couple of improvised scenes in this: - When Indy is up against the all-black sword fighter and pulls out his gun and shoots the guy, that was devised because Harrison had dysentery and couldn't do the full rehearsed sword vs whip fight. Someone came up with the gun killing the guy as a quick-to-shoot alternative which audiences LOVED. - When the snake falls on Marion's neck in the well of the souls, that was Steven Spielberg's idea (he didn't tell her ahead of time and her glare back at him is real) - When Indy says to Marion on the ship, "It's not the age, it's the mileage", that was Harrison's idea. Also, when Indy and Sullah are getting the Ark, if you look at one of the pillars with the hieroglyphics (I think it's the one on the left in the scene) you can see R2-D2 and C-3PO from Star Wars. Hi. I was 8 when Raiders came out but didn't get to see it on big screen until many years later. It is my favorite Indiana Jones movie and my favorite movie of all time. I became an Indy fan after seeing Last Crusade in theaters at the age of 16 and have been crushing out on Harrison Ford since then. He was, of course devastatingly handsome as Indy and made hundreds of girls hearts a flutter. His tanned physique, that heart stopping smile those gorgeous hazel eyes, the rugged scar... Of course I loved Harrison as Han Solo, too!!!
I just recently started watching your channel, one of my favorite things about it is how you dress the part for whatever we happen to be watching! haha
I can now claim Jen Murray was my first, I have never sat and watched an add for anybody but I watched every second! I hope hello fresh treats you well.
I saw this as a kid when it came out with my family. The theater was so crowded we couldn't sit together. Your reactions to several scenes are how I remember the whole audience reacting at the time. What is that? Oh that's a menacing hanger. :-)
Really have come to appreciate reaction videos as of lately. Some are a bit out there and some don't hold my attention at all. I do look forward to your posts. You are so chill it's like watching great movies with a good friend. Thanks for your work and never stop being you😊
This is some real trivia: Spielberg wanted to make a Bond film, out of curiosity, but Cubby R. Broccoli (famous for producing the spy franchise) turned him down. Whereas George Lucas, without an inch of sarcasm, said "Ive got something better than Bond". And thus came this 1981 film and it spawned 4 sequels through the years. But the 5th instalment, well, that remains to be judged individually.
The first and third movies are the best in my opinion. Temple of Doom was good, but not as good as 1 and 3. I'm one of the few people I know who actually likes the fourth movie. I thought the Russian antagonists were awesome and I loved Mud and Marion's return. The crystal skull has been a serious conundrumto archeologists for a while now... Personally, I thought they should have made a bunch of Indiana Jones Jr movies with Shia Labouff. Maybe a series. But the KK monster just HAD to ruin another franchise and Dial of Destiny was spawned. KK had to kill off Mud offscreen amd screw Indiana Jones as far as she could. Shame on KK. I still have not seen that one.
@@jenmurrayxo I wouldn't force its proximity on someone who I knew was arachnophobic. I only took my reptiles and tarantulas to schools and scout groups who asked. I'm not hostile toward animals that are helpful in controlling pests and would only hurt me in self defense. I have handled a lot of spiders and was only bitten once when I was about eight by a jumping spider that I accidentally pinched when I closed my hand over it. In recent decades my main interaction with spiders has been to gently take them outdoors when they were found inside.
People rarely contacted me about helping them overcome their fear of spiders or dogs. Ophidophobia, fear of snakes, was a more frequent subject, as I was mostly known for my involvement with reptiles. I took the request as indicating that they were ready to try interacting with the object of their fear.
Loved your reaction! Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones is the best example of that Austin Powers quote: Women want him and men want to be him. Everyone loves Indy! haha
No pet spider or snake for Jen. I was 8 when I saw this movie on a Rented VHS cassette in 1983. My 2 older sisters and I told our parents we where to scared to go to bed after seeing the creepy ark scene near the end of the movie. We convinced our parents to let us watch a Disney movie to calm us down before going to bed. So we could stay up longer. Random recommendation for some light hearted cheesy 80's fun is 1986 Short Circuit. If you haven't seen it. The theme song was stuck in my head for a week after.
The third Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, remains my favorite. This film is one that still sounds weird to me with the "Indiana Jones" prefix. When I watched it, it was still just called Raiders of the Lost Ark. But then, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was still being marketed only as Star Wars, so there is that. I think both got their extra bits to their marketing titles around the same time (though Star Wars had long before appended both Episode IV and A New Hope in the title crawl). It makes sense they'd do it, but it just doesn't seem right when people say it as such, to my mind. At least they didn't edit the title as it appears on screen, though, which is nice.
Obviously at that stage they didn't know there would be a series of films. The main title just reads "Raiders of the Lost Ark". I really see no trouble in letting viewers know it's part of a series.
Your reaction to the spiders alone deserves a tip as does your speed hair braiding 🔥if it was a choice between spiders or snakes I'd have to go with snakes eeeeek both are a no from me . Oh man didn’t see this coming but I’m SO glad you’re doing this series! Lol, “that money’s a bad guy!” Hilarious, but yeah I’m with you on big hairy spiders. Hellll no. Lol, the machine gun noises and the Harrison thirst were adorable to watch. So glad you enjoyed them. Man I forgot how much fun we had seeing this in theaters. We must’ve gone back to see this 1/2 a dozen times.
This was the first movie I ever saw..in a Drive In and is one of my earliest memories in 1981. Marion is a classic George Lucas female character - the "damsel NOT in distress".
I saw Temple of Doom at a drive-in, the 2nd movie was Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan. My mother took me and my best friend, we were either 8 or 9. I think we fell asleep before Star Trek finished, but I remember the bug that went in that guy's ear!
One of my all-time fave films - arguably the best of the franchise and one of the greatest action/adventure films ever made. Ford's second iconic role (after Han Solo) truly makes it his own with a great cast including the sexy and feisty Karen Allen (lucky enough to meet her and she's even more beautiful and down to earth IRL). When I saw this when it first came out my mom took me and my sister into the theatre lobby to chastise us before the screening (we were cutting up) and threatened that we'd be getting punished when we got home. The film was such a great experience viewing it with my parents my mom totally forgot to follow up on the grounding :D ;d Yes by all means watch the entire franchise; you won't regret it Jen. Nice job as usual here.
Other trivia, the U-boat (submarine) movie prop that pulls them over was one of the ones used to film the German movie "Das Boot" which was also being done around the same time.
1. While filming in Tunisia most of the cast got food poisoning and Ford actually got diarrhea from it. and was very ill. The scene where he shoots the guy was supposed to be another long fight scene but Ford was feeling so bad and it was terribly hot so he basically said, "The hell with this" and just shot the guy.🤣 2. Karen Allen played Boone's squeeze in "Animal House" HINT HINT 3. If you don't like spiders you're going to love the next one. It's not the best of the bunch but it's adventurous. Billy is a pain in the ass though. 4. Two overlooked Harrison Ford movies worth a first time/share are: "Witness" and "Force 10 From Navarone" 5. The sand in the ark is the stone tablets turned to sand over time. 6. The ride at Disneyland is pretty cool. Make sure it's one of your first to get it out of the way before the line gets too long. Adventureland.
Great reaction! Seeing a young person watching these old movies and having such a good time really takes me back to the good old days, Thanks for posting! Best wishes for you and your channel.
Other good adventure movies in this style would be Stargate, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, The Shadow, The Mummy (1999), John Carter (2012), The Fifth Element, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), The Green Hornet (2011), Romancing the Stone and Flash Gordon (2000) all have a 1930s/40s pulp action/adventure vibe similar to Raiders. Characters like The Phantom, Flash Gordon, The Shadow, John Carter and Tarzan were foundational in creating the pulp action/adventure genre.
Die hard fans might recognize ROBERT NEVIN who played the medical examiner in JAWS lurking in the background at the very end scene discussing the location of the arc. WATCH FOR HIM!
Anyone else think the noises made by the wraiths sound like echo location. They're immediately reconnoitering the area to find anyone in the vicinity. A couple of them zipped about the captives and obviously saw them tied up and eyes closed. The bad guys just stand there like fairies are surrounding them when in fact they're being sized up for dinner. Totally clueless that they are TOTALLY outgunned from the start. Love, love, love it. Saw this in theater when brand new and no idea what was going to happen. So much fun. Love the group experience of movies in the theatre.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Right ON!! Your sincere enjoyment during the heart-pounding action, your genuine awe as the scope of the story unveiled and your APPRECIATION of Harrison Ford's skill as an actor kept ME smiling throughout your entire reaction. Fun reaction + fun movie = fun time. Thank you! This movie is one of my all-time favorites. And John Williams' score is top-notch. IMVHO, this his 2nd best score behind what he wrote & conducted for movie that starts with a capitol "S" ...Superman (that's right, I said it).

Such a fun and fantastic film. Watching you swoon over Harrison Ford was delightful. This is what adventure movies are all about. Glad you enjoyed it, Jen.
Harrison was extremely sick with dysentery during the Arab swordsman scene, which originally was planned as a full fight sequence. He told Spielberg the only way he was going to last the day's shoot was if he just shot the bad guy. Spielberg thought it funny, and shot it that way...
We watched your full commentary on Patreon while we were also viewing the movie simultaneously, it was like you were right there lol. Jen!!! I was thinking about you today because I was watching a movie and had the same reaction you had to Harrison Ford. I love your unfiltered honesty in sighing and commenting on how handsome he is. Some PC people just will NOT admit any attraction to anyone because, well, they're PC. I was watching a Hallmark movie with an actress I think is drop-dead beautiful, so much so that I found myself doing what you did, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe how gorgeous she is," sighing and everything. Funny thing is she's one of the second-bananas who always gets cast as the best friend of the protagonist. Her name is Amy Groening. I pretty much have trouble following the story when she's on the screen. So when I was teasing you about running some of the movie on "loop," I was actually relating to myself. Can't wait for your next one. Later, Gator!!! :)
I've been a subscriber for a couple of months now and I have to say that you became my favorite reaction UA-camr. You don't over-react like many others so your emotion look and feel genuine.
Possibly the best movie ever made. The almost-perfect mix of everything!! Adventure, action, humor and romance. The special effects are 2nd to none. I remember seeing this in a theater in the early-summer of 1981, in Tucson, AZ when it 1st came out. This movie is just a good as it ever was and never gets old!!
Another rewatch done for you and your channel, Jen, I really enjoyed seeing your reaction again. I'll do the others in the series tomorrow morning, as I need an early night so, I'll say, good night, sleep well and sweet dreams, Jen. 😊
Really happy you've gotten around to the Indiana Jones movies. The next one, Temple of Doom takes place before Raiders. Sort of confusing as the timeline messes some people up who never seen the trilogy. Each movie should be viewed as it's own enclosed story as there really isn't a continuation of an overall story like Star Wars or Back to the Future.
Oh wow, "I take it back the monkey might be a nazi" is one of the funniest things I've heard a reactor say 🤣

Such a hunk!! 🥰🥰
I love history and learning about war history. Hitler was very interested in the occult for some reason.
I just recently started watching your channel, one of my favorite things about it is how you dress the part for whatever we happen to be watching! haha
Thanks, I'm having fun with it ☺👍
I can now claim Jen Murray was my first, I have never sat and watched an add for anybody but I watched every second! I hope hello fresh treats you well.
Definitely add the classic 80s adventure ROMANCING THE STONE to your list, Jen.
I saw this as a kid when it came out with my family. The theater was so crowded we couldn't sit together. Your reactions to several scenes are how I remember the whole audience reacting at the time. What is that? Oh that's a menacing hanger. :-)
Must've been awesome to see as a kid & in theaters! ☺👍
Just started your video, and love the vintage door to your room. This room looks like a southern bed and breakfast. Love it!
Oh thanks! My house has lots of character I love! 👌
Really have come to appreciate reaction videos as of lately. Some are a bit out there and some don't hold my attention at all. I do look forward to your posts. You are so chill it's like watching great movies with a good friend. Thanks for your work and never stop being you😊
Thanks Bob! 👍
😊😊😊
If your friends/patreons have horror film requests, hit me up if you want a heads up. That's my forte.😊
I would love to see You react to "The Neverending Story"!
That’d be almost like a reaction of someone’s reaction. Lol. Gmork approves.
Me too
Yeah, people say: "The poor monkey!" And I say: "It was a NAZI MONKEY."
This movie is utter perfection.
Agreed! ☺👍
"Makes me want to put a braid in my hair" ... 3 seconds later: A braid. How is that possible? 🤔😂
21:06 Did Jen just “what a baby!” Indiana freakin’ Jones?!?!
🤣🤣
Another couple of great Harrison Ford movies are Blade Runner and The Fugitive!
"The Frisco Kid" was an underrated Western comedy starring Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder from 1979. It deserves a reaction.
The spiders that creeped you out are Mexican red knee tarantulas, a fairly docile species that were popular pets in the '70s and '80s.
Oh my goodness I could never have one as a pet 😱
@@jenmurrayxo I wouldn't force its proximity on someone who I knew was arachnophobic. I only took my reptiles and tarantulas to schools and scout groups who asked. I'm not hostile toward animals that are helpful in controlling pests and would only hurt me in self defense. I have handled a lot of spiders and was only bitten once when I was about eight by a jumping spider that I accidentally pinched when I closed my hand over it. In recent decades my main interaction with spiders has been to gently take them outdoors when they were found inside.
I really wish I could learn to love spiders, but it seems impossible!
@@jenmurrayxo I am sorry that anyone must suffer this phobia, as they are pretty much everywhere outside Antarctica.
People rarely contacted me about helping them overcome their fear of spiders or dogs. Ophidophobia, fear of snakes, was a more frequent subject, as I was mostly known for my involvement with reptiles. I took the request as indicating that they were ready to try interacting with the object of their fear.
You’ve seen the Lord of the Rings movies?
…Sallah is Gimli !
That guy with the glasses is named Toht, courtesy of the Kenner Indiana Jones action figures from the early 1980s.
Hitler was indeed interested in supernatural artifacts. Glad you picked up on that.
Loved your reaction! Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones is the best example of that Austin Powers quote: Women want him and men want to be him. Everyone loves Indy! haha
Oh so true!! 👍👍
Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, and Jurassic Park = Speilberg's holy trinity
Need to see Jaws this summer!!
Love this classic as well! 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 It has a sort of the 1940s Republic Serial vibes.
20:21 - Belloq: "Idiot! Idiot!"
Lol so cute!! ☺👍
MVP always Boston when he's chilling in the background what a good boy 😊 kicking off September in style cheers Jen for being awesome and continuing to be awesome you're the best 🔥💙🔥💙
Thanks Ian!! ☺️👍
Must've been a blast to see in theaters! ☺👍
Awesome! One of my all time favorite movies.
Total classic 👍👍
This was the first movie I ever saw..in a Drive In and is one of my earliest memories in 1981. Marion is a classic George Lucas female character - the "damsel NOT in distress".
Marion is awesome!!
@@jenmurrayxo Watch 'Starman' with Jeff Bridges. Whether he comes around or not, she's in that.
I saw Temple of Doom at a drive-in, the 2nd movie was Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan. My mother took me and my best friend, we were either 8 or 9. I think we fell asleep before Star Trek finished, but I remember the bug that went in that guy's ear!
A couple of alternative movies of the time are “ Allen Quartermaine” and “ Doc Savage the Man of Bronze “.
"Hovitos." Loosely translated, "Storm Troopers of the Jungle..." I believe.
Really?!
@@jenmurrayxo They shoot like 'em... (PEW! PEW!)
"That monkey might be a Nazi" may be the best sentence ever spoken on this channel.
Lol! 🤣
"I don't believe in magic and a whole bunch of superstitious hocus-pocus" hearkens back to Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope...
I enjoy watching your reaction videos and I’m so happy you watched my favorite movie of all time. This is the movie that made me love movies.
Boy... Your editor is really good, too...!
Oh neat, I want to see that movie too! 👌
1. While filming in Tunisia most of the cast got food poisoning and Ford actually got diarrhea from it. and was very ill. The scene where he shoots the guy
was supposed to be another long fight scene but Ford was feeling so bad and it was terribly hot so he basically said, "The hell with this" and just shot the guy.🤣
2. Karen Allen played Boone's squeeze in "Animal House" HINT HINT
3. If you don't like spiders you're going to love the next one. It's not the best of the bunch but it's adventurous. Billy is a pain in the ass though.
4. Two overlooked Harrison Ford movies worth a first time/share are: "Witness" and "Force 10 From Navarone"
5. The sand in the ark is the stone tablets turned to sand over time.
6. The ride at Disneyland is pretty cool. Make sure it's one of your first to get it out of the way before the line gets too long. Adventureland.
Thanks for the info William! ☺👍
Great reaction! Seeing a young person watching these old movies and having such a good time really takes me back to the good old days, Thanks for posting! Best wishes for you and your channel.
You needed your protective blanket for the spiders scene.
Yes!! 😱😱😱
Hitler did have some interest in the occult, but it was more Himmler and the SS. There were a lot of esoteric occult beliefs among high ranking nazis
Is crazy that the final scene, alone, inspired an entire TV series (called "Warehouse 13").
The Ark will make a brief cameo in the fourth movie.
Caption fun: 'Indiana Jones hates steaks, I hate spiders. A match made in heaven.'
Bahaha
The 2nd one, Temple Of Doom, is actually a prequel since it takes place a few years before Raiders.
One year before.
The Mummy coming Tues! 👍
Die hard fans might recognize ROBERT NEVIN who played the medical examiner in JAWS lurking in the background at the very end scene discussing the location of the arc. WATCH FOR HIM!
Need to see Jaws this summer! 😎👍
8:23 "There's a lot of history, there!"
Well, he is an archaeologist...
IMVHO, this his 2nd best score behind what he wrote & conducted for movie that starts with a capitol "S"
...Superman (that's right, I said it).
Thanks David! I really did have such a blast watching this one ☺👍 John Williams is the greatest!!
@@jenmurrayxo If Hollywood had not ended up being what it is,
you should have become an actress. Your reactions are effortlessly fun.
You're almost like an extra character from the movie. 👍
My favourite film of all time since I first saw it summer 1981 and it blew my then 10yr old mind. The perfect hero in the perfect adventure. 😁
Must've been so awesome to see as a kid!! ☺👍
18:49 I just heard Ford ad-libbed that line because he forgot what he was going to say. It just works so well!
Such a fun and fantastic film. Watching you swoon over Harrison Ford was delightful.
This is what adventure movies are all about. Glad you enjoyed it, Jen.
What a fun reaction.....Really enjoyed watching along
Thanks John!
Be sure you watch the next movie, "The Temple of Doom" it's actually a prequel to this movie that takes place a year or two earlier in the timeline. It's my favorite Indiana Jones movie as great as this one is!
Awesome! The watch alongs are pretty cool! Definitely want to watch the trilogy ☺👍
So thanks to the whip scene in the opening, its why garage doors now are required to have an eye to stop it from closing on people.
Another fun reaction. Glad
You enjoyed it. Other excellent HF movies to check out:
Witness
The Fugitive
What Lies Beneath
Really want to see The Fugitive! 👍
It's cool seeing the younger gen watching the movies us genx grew up with....I didn't know one kids mom that didn't like Harrison Ford..lol...he was the shit back then n still is today🤘👍✌️
Yes... Hitler was totally into anything occult looking to conquer the world.....AND Indiana movies have the best "punching" noises out of all movies ever made 😅
If you’ve never seen Witness, that’s a great one and The Fugitive.
Want to see The Fugitive soon! 👍
Thanks Christopher! Glad to hear I'm not the only one swooning over beautiful people 😆👍🥰🥰
I've been a subscriber for a couple of months now and I have to say that you became my favorite reaction UA-camr. You don't over-react like many others so your emotion look and feel genuine.
Thank you! So glad you're enjoying chilling & watching with me! ☺👍
