Installing Starlink (Satellite Internet) Off-Grid in Portugal

- When we're faced with less than ideal circumstances we're always looking for ways to improve the situation. We've been dealing with pretty poor internet connectivity - via a 4G data SIM - for the last two years. It's time for an upgrade!
In this video we'll go through the whole process from unboxing to installation to having a positive (and hopefully faster!) Internet experience. We'll talk about the costs of Starlink in Portugal, contrast this to 4G data and - of course - compare the speeds of each.
Let's find out if Starlink satellite internet from Space X is any good.
Sitting in a shipping container in rural Western Australia watching your video through starlink. Very happy with the service out here.
If you aren't getting signal from the Starlink router in the house, consider investing in a separate long range wifi router like Unifi U6-LongRange or other brand of your choosing with good long range wifi routers. Hardwire it into the Starlink with the Ethernet attachment, then use that instead of the Starlink WiFi
Well done on the smooth setup, thanks for sharing 🙌
Love this channel. I find both of your voices very soothing. Best wishes from SC.
Your explanations are so clear and informative. Thank you!
What an incredibly helpful video for what I’m going through in Costa Rica right now. The timing could not have been more perfect, thank you so much.
You two are the best at sharing very useful information! Thank you😊👏👏👏
I am considering star link as well. Thank you for your informative video. I always enjoy watching you two.
you both make me happy))) love ur style and humor and free spirit. best of luck dears.
The videos you both make and share here are my desert. I always save your videos for last because they are so enjoyable and down to earth - reality at it's best. Hope you understand the metaphors. God bless you both :)
🤣😂👏👏You 2 are so funny!
The vid , I knew, was comming sooner than later 👍
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks once again for you VERY CLEAR AND COMPLETE explanation of the situation. You both are adorable !
Great video! You had us checking our Internet speeds and trying to budget in changing to starlink. Keep us updated on how well it's working for you guys!
Thank you. Very informative 👏 I really appreciate how you explain things, I'm able to follow & comprehend! Good luck!
Solid set up video. Articulate and interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Hey guys, great vid. I live in central Portugal, with the same problems that you guys faced, and i am really interested into buying a Starlink. Thank you for reassure me of my decision.
I have to agree 100% about the satisfaction you feel when you look at what you’ve accomplished. I am currently looking at recipes for lime cordial and will do it soon. I am in recovery mode now from working on our off grid property, which is a houseboat in the middle of a lake. I prepped and prepped and prepped our motor box, a steel structure 4’ deep into the water and 4’ wide and 6’ long, used 2 part epoxy....so happy that’s done and it looks fantastic, thank god!
Loving your videos...👍💯🤗 your humour is Spot on
Just started watching your channel and I am very impressed what's going on. So now I need to go back, way back in time to catch up but that's ok coz I have plenty of time hahaha. Starlink I have heard is very very good for any remote area in the World and that speed is just amazing!!
By far the funniest video you've done! Thanks for sharing. 😃
We've had Starlink for almost a year now after trying 4G internet and we have no regrets. Regarding power usage, it's the round dish which uses ~150w, but the square dish uses *much* less. We've put a power monitor on ours and the square dish averages ~40w/h over a 24hr period. We still put a timer on it so it's turned off overnight.
Great to know! We’ve considered turning it off at night but then our weather station wouldn’t be able to collect data …. and in the future we’ll need it to run the smart tech in our home
yeah it is definetly a high power usage for an offgrid system
@@LiLBitsDK I follow a vanlifer who has it in Canada, hardwired into his Van, he's very happy 😊
You could put it on a motion sensor... It turns off half an hour after you go to bed...
@@MAKEDOGROW You could get a subnet router to run the local network while the Starlink is off... If you get the ethernet adaptor for the Starlink it need only serve the internet connection and not run the local network...
This video is great! I am currently in the process of MAYBE moving into a farm, also in the center of Portugal and Internet has been a huge concern. I've been keeping up-to-date with Starlink for the last 3 years and I'm so happy they've lowered the prices into a semi-competitive standard, with great results. I was looking for a video that talked about that exact issue and you were bang on! I would very much appreciate if you could do an update of your experience with it or, alternatively, contact you somehow and directly ask my questions! Thank you for the great video and you've gained a subscriber and IG follower!
You're very lucky to get Starlink- we're in Ontario, Canada, and can't get it in our area - Thanks for sharing....
Really impressed by that Starlink speed. Lived in Spain for some years on a mountain and internet (cable) was horrific there (1MB). Hope you lot get to enjoy it more now the speeds have gone up.
The speeds are good until the service gets over subscribed...
Caution. It has been reported Starlink can beam wine from your home directly to Mr. Musk.
🤣🤣🤣
🍷🍷😂
Then I would pee in that bottle.
It is only Moscato wine though😉.
😂LOL 😆
Congrats on your new Starlink internet. I agree with Gnoll's comment. You can get your own indoor/outdoor mesh WIFI system such as Unifi. This will help get wifi throughout your stone house and yard. All one network as you go through your day. There are some good videos, which will be easier for you to watch now!
Starlink wired ethernet adapter and a POE (Power over ethernet) injector - then you can put a simple outdoor wifi base station at up wherever you want coverage - limited to about 30 meters of cable length ! We use 2 outdoor units for our property and no problems!
Thanks for the content.
Great content, thanks… good luck with it…😊😊 might buy in Brazil for myself..
10:08 I *CRACKED* up 😂 .. You guys are too funny together! ❤
Really glad for you two, you will love it, we've had ours for almost 7 months now, and very little issues, we are very pleased, outside of the $110.00 price increase. 🍷🍷👍💚
What country are you in? Price increase??
@@Techa-lo2dc in the u.s. it was $99. a month, now it's $110.00.
In northern Alentejo some friends put a transmitter in a church tower and sent a signal 5km to the top of a water tower to a solar powered antenna/transmitter and then sent the signal 2km further onto the property to a receiver. The solar system for the water tower was by far the biggest expense. Since you are only 2km if you have clear line of site from the village to your land it is very possible without a midway point. If you have a hill blocking the signal then it gets a bit more tricky and costly but still possible. They have 500/400 and are extremely remote. If only you were their neighbors it would be so easy to put a signal on your land. They laid over a kilometer of fiber line when they expanded the electricity grid so 300 down/200up in a 100 meter radius at the 8 power stations around the land. I was getting speed tests of 200/100 at 150 meters from an access point we put 7 meters up a tree with clear line of sight. The slower speed tests had a lot more usage on the system from the initial 500/400 numbers, 100 people vs 30 people using the wifi. If you want to expand down the road to fiber I could help you out, just shoot me an email.
I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Great video. Thank you!
Few weeks back I was admitted into Poole Hospital. Poole Hospital WiFi will not allow the viewing of UA-cam!! As I could see the telephone mast on top of Poole Hospital from my bed. I purchased from Amazon a TP Link Hotspot device . The same as yours. Amazon delivered it to my hospital bed. I set it up which was a bit of a trouble due to two undocumented switches on the back. I had excellent WiFi speed as expected and was happerly watching youtube when the consultant did his rounds. It was entered into my hospital notes that I had set up my own internet hotspot!! I have a 14" Samsung Tablet.
Currently I am paying £27 per month for fiber broadband in darkest Dorset UK. I obtain 48 Mbps download and 19 Mbps upload.
Did the hospital try to charge you for the private internet?? Or shut it down!? I have 11 inch tablet! So versatile!
@@Techa-lo2dc In every UK NHS establishment there is now free wifi. Whilst waiting to see my GP i read the papers on my phone. In hospital papers and email is acceptable but not video.
I'd never heard of Starlink looks a strong option. Thanks for the info.
I lived in Ireland in the middle of nowhere with bad reception of 4G (dropped often to 3G) in a location surrounded by lots of trees. I bought a cheapo Chinese 4G router and an external directional antenna and got great reception. The directional antenna (approximately 20 x 30 cm) made a huge difference. The antenna was even directed towards nearby trees and had no issues.
Yeap if you have 4G reception then starlink is overpriced usually, starlink is competitive when there is no 4G
For low reception 4g a dedicated antena is usually a decent solution...
@@pinheirokde router Router Huawei B818-263 if you have 4G + external antena. It will be about 30-40 Mb/s. But never 200 in the middle of nowhere.
@@andrzejlososowski8143 I said if you have decent 4G... In that case and IMO the (at times) speed advantage of starlink is not worth the price, we are talking 3x per month.... On top of the antenna.
Glad this worked out for you.
That is brilliant , it should make a huge difference.
Great vid, very useful 😀
Been using Starlink for a month or two. Works great. Plus you own equipment- can take it with you.
Can you tell me some speeds you got ? I may buy it too

Considering a Starlink installation in central PT myself (Pampilhosa da Serra) so this video was perfectly timed... Muitos Thanks!! I'm curious about how long the wait was from the time you ordered until the equipment's arrival. Love the channel! -Pete
Took less than 2 weeks from ordering (shipped from Germany), we were amazed! The monthly billing starts 14 days after they dispatch
@@MAKEDOGROW Very good to know... thanks guys!
We had great excitement here in NZ last Christmas. The kids were in the swimming pool in the evening and suddenly started pointing at the sky.....look at that! What's that? Starlink satellites flew right above us, a line of white lights and they seemed so close overhead. An amazing sight to see as they arced out to the East.
Actually not overly expensive if it works and is semi portable. In Michigan, USA. Connecting to fiber optic about 25ft/8m “house to curb” was about $260 usd and $53usd monthly for the first two years. Once the discount expires it’s almost $75usd.
You are very fortunate, as we do not have the service of Starlink here in South Africa.
Interesting video with a successful outcome yay xxx
I would try to put the Rooter (lol) in that giant attic then the wifi may even work at the tent, of course after you get electricity in the house. Nice upgrade but that is the slowest upload yet that I have seen from Starlink users. Cheers
Thanks guys! 🌀💚🌀
We are currently at 54 mbps in an area outside of Houston, TX. So that is amazing that you're getting 211. ($114 a month)
I’m in Norfolk, Virginia, USA and with my wireless 5G network I’m getting 185 mbps download and 27 mbps upload. So for your circumstances you’re doing pretty good. By the way, I pay $50 US dollars per month for unlimited download at these speeds.
Cracking video, very informative and love the way the lady was the one that went up the ladder to install lol.
Maybe check out some of our other videos, I do more than go up ladders 😃
@@MAKEDOGROW I have dipped in and out but up to date. Like the way you are staying as true as possible to conservation principles with product and materials allow.

@@johnweir1875 I’ve not found any conservation entities here, though they might exist in places like Tomar (the castle there is UNESCO registered and in the old town the original facades of the buildings have to be maintained).

Nice! I’ve been wondering how well it performs in rural Portugal. Thanks!
Great video Kylie & Guy. Most of it went over my head as I'm bereft of technological wisdom. I just had a little chuckle when Kylie calls it a "router" and Guy calls it a "rooter"
British pronunciation (all English-speaking countries other than America/American directly influenced countries?) pronounce router as "rooter". From our point of view a "row-ter" is a woodworking tool for carving odd curves.
Don't get me started on bouy!
@@Neilhuny so you're saying in this case that Australians defer to the American pronunciation rather than the British
@@Neilhuny Interesting note, the word "route" is pronounced differently in the US depending on region. Some say "root" others "rowt". 💕
@@robine916 Wow, I didn't know that! I'm surprised and impressed, Robin.
Brett I strongly suspect that this Australian deferred to the many American viewers she has, though to be honest, I don't know for sure that they would choose to say the "rooter" version.
@@Neilhuny After thinking about it, I realized that I, personally say root for a numbered road/highway ("root" 66) or "which 'root' should we take today?", and "rowter" for the internet connection! LOL
Your interaction always makes lol, keep moving forward, but now you can do it faster.
Wouldn't have clue how to to set it up, even watching you both.
*Whoosh all that went over me head... but still good to watch and learn. Hope it all works out well for you. In NZ we are slowly being forced off our Copper phone landlines for Broadband etc over to Fibre Broadband. So for me it may mean a new Modem (at a cost) if my one is not acceptable and get new landline phone/s to replace my ones that are only a few years old. Then no longer able to ring out for emergency's or 0800 and 0508 numbers as old phones are connected to the copper line. They expect everyone to own smart cell phones (using data), but they haven't taken into account that there are many oldies or rural folks that have landlines or wont be able to get fibre laid to their homes.! The joys of technology..!!!!.*
Same in Aus... You can still connect your old phone to the new fibre modem... But the speed increase isn't much for most people. We went from ADSL at 20mb to NBN at 45mb and no noticeable difference at all.
Very COOL, guys!!
With that success I think it’s time for a wine…👍🤣
Cheers from Oz🇦🇺💕
Very cool!
thanks for the great video. I am also in Portugal and looking at starlink - did you order directly from Starlink?
Good to know I'm in a village in Italy a farming community but quite urban. I've lived in Portugal before too Lisbon. Anyway what keeps me in my house here in Italy Is I have a very good reliable internet for my house costs 29 Euro a month. When I'm out and about I have a mobile service which costs 50 Euro for six months unlimited (I've never gone over) So internet does factor in where you live, I'm a UA-camr so I'm loathe to change that
i live in the middle of nowhere in the campo alentejo portugal. For 10 years internet (Vodafone) was a problem until I bought a Nighthawk M1 Netgear mobile router and unlimited data from nos (nos kanguru unlimited 30€ per month). No more problems with the internet. A mobile router has its limits. Keep that in mind.
We had a nighthawk in London but had loads of issues with it, that’s why we changed to TP Link. Perhaps it was an older model ….
@@MAKEDOGROW i have the Nighthawk for 4 years i only have an Android phone and tablet and no computer or laptop. now that the starlink has become cheaper, my interest in a starlstarlink has also grown.
@@MAKEDOGROW Mobile data modems are hugely dependent on local congestion and conditions. Sometimes they work great, sometimes not... My 3g usb modem used to be great somedays and not others (during peak times). Now I use my phone 4g hotspot when away from home, so far no problems.
HELLO KYLIE & GUY...GOOD TO KNOW, SHOULD I LAND THERE AS AN EXPAT IN THE FUTURE...ALL THE BEST...🙏🏻;)
I’ll be thinking of you guys every time the starlink rockets takeoff, which is weekly, and nearly rattle the windows out of my house here in Florida.
I am getting 900mbit/900mbit next month, can't wait, currently on 45mbit.
That thumbnail is epic
Hi, you should also get a set of wifi extenders to get greater mobility. They are not expensive.
Better to get a full local network and wifi router so that it functions even when the Starlink is off. They might end up with a local server/storage etc. I know everything is cloud based these days but it's better not to be if your internet service isn't cheap as dirt...
Could you please do an update video on how it is performing through the rain season? Thank you and love your work.
We probably won’t do an update video for a while, but it has fared very well. The other night we had heavy rain, thunder and lightning…. all while sitting comfortably watching YT 😀
There have been a couple of random offline outages, but 5 mins later and everything was back online
Lovely.
It`s great to open new stuff boxes.
Starlink 🤩 to the stars and beyond 👍🏼
Thats a real game changer. I think worth every Penny. Upload and download were great. Is there anyway of improving that latency? I would be very interested for you to show some updates after a few weeks/months .
For us latency improved over time, presumably as it takes a few days for it to find the best position. We now consistently get 30ms, though we're in East Anglia so might have a better choice of satellites to connect to vs Portugal. Latency has also been significantly more stable than 4G which seemed to take a nosedive at any hint of weather :D Would be interested to see an update on this after it's settled!
Latency is dependent on the distance to the nearest satellite and the congestion on the network. Latency is only a problem if you use the internet for real time interactions such as video calls or gaming... IMO... What else is latency sensitive?
I follow a few people on YT who live off grid in Portugal, and every single one who's got Starlink are very happy with it. Really glad you got it and that it's working for you too 🙂
many of then are installing starlink with fiber connection available in their location (1G download/400 megas upload or more) with very low latency 3ms-6ms... most of the poor villages/aldeias in Portugal are now available with fiber connection, project called - RNG - Redes de Nova Geração...
That's because most of the people that are off grid are rural. They are upgrading from 4g or less, to satellite internet... A big step up.
I've been interested in Starlink for a long time (available 2023 in my area of the US). Thanks for your video, you guys are great! I know you both work some online, will either of you be connecting to a corporate VPN? I need to connect to one for work and would love to know how the latency affects it. I know non-Starlink satellite internet doesn't do well with a VPN.
VPN should work fine over Starlink... But some enterprise software are very latency and speed dependent... Usually there is a work-around that work will if you are prepared to try.
Starlink generally has good speed, but not necessarily good latency... So test it out...
thanks
Starlink is a great service for people living outside city infrastructure... It's not for everyone, but great for those who need it...
The starlink service is going to change the world, it is opening up the internet and all the knowledge to everywhere on the planet.
It also means that for remote areas they will have a monopoly in every country.
Don't worry about the tractor noise in the background, I didn't notice it at all. Let us know how Starlink is going in a few months. Cheers! People think Starlink is expensive but they forget that you get 100x the speed with only 2x the cost in rural areas.
hi guys. am living in uae. we have learned how to deal with heat and heated buildings. there are roof /walls solar reflective coatings. might be you want to try one. it seriously reduces the heat-up (speaking of heat in your shed.)
I attend UA-cam University also 😂❤. Great place to learn and be entertained.
That doesn't sound too bad. We are paying 50€ for a 100Mbit landline. You get more than twice that for a little higher price.
It's deffo better value for money than 4g, I'm on voxi which is Vodafone and it was spotty when I was travelling round portugal, luckily I had downloaded the maps off Google, saved my ass.
Hasn't your Aussie wife told you what "rooter" means in Australia? Every time you say "rooter" not router I'm in fits of giggles 😀😀
Same here... In Aus...
Normally when I do things, they go sideways - the last two upgrades arrived without a particular cable in one case, and a charger in the other.
Not much far away from where you guys live, my parents have a small house in a village in Mação. When I go there I use Vodafone's 4G LTE and it works great, and I was using about 10GB a day, only with 2 or 3 bars. ADSL on these places is usually a scam. We have had terrible service from MEO. It doesn't help the area is classified as a NC (No competition) zone. They don't make any effort to even fix any malfunctions
I think YT is finally trying to help your channel grow. So many others have hit 100K subs far faster than yours. Keep or get happy or happier for your videos so they get more hits. Just a thought.
Really pretty poor your initial measure. I´m always measuring the internet speed, and I knew the Castelo Branco area to be lousy. In Tigre in Argentina I had 20 Mbps, a company promised 50, but it was fake. In Barajas in Madrid I measured 50. I selected Coimbra just because of this issue. Here I have 50 Mbps guaranteed since December 2021, with peaks of 140. In Lisbon - Saldanha I measured the same values, but in the suburbs of Lisbon you´ll get lousy values. Madeira seems even better with 500 Mbps. Your Starlink values are impressive, and your cost is very atractive. Thank you for the report. ¡Congrats!
Great content, as this shows Elons business's are way ahead of anyone else. This will encourage more people to adopt.
Starlink is most beneficial to people in rural areas. City use might sound good at the start but eventually the network will get congested and speeds will drop. This has already happened in many USA cities.
Hey Guys great Video. We live in the Algarve and got online to order directly after watching. However it doesnt matter how may ways i try to configure it ,the site wont accept my address........any hints, and how long did it take for your to arrive. Did you order a ethernet adapter too
We had the same problem initially with our address, but then we used the Google maps plus code and that worked.
Took about 8 days to arrive, from Germany. We didn’t get the Ethernet adaptor but will get that when we move it to the house (just using WiFi for now)
Interesting. I have 3 and a half G connection and get like 8Mb and is stable enough.
I'm paying like 80 eur for two unlimited accounts and a sim copy inside an AliExpress router. I can work, but when in the afternoon my daughter arrives and starts with Netflix, sometimes the user experience drops.
Not planning on upgrade for now (unlimited data in the phone gives amazing flexibility for a teleworker), but it's sure a very interesting option!
gotta love it...starlink for president
The Starlink ping of 102ms ( as seen in your video ) is very high. That might be a problem with live streams like Zoom or Teams and the like. Let us know if video calls work fine despite the latency. Cheers
Starlink latency/ping is always high... It has to go 500km into space and back to ground before it reaches the internet... I'd love to know how this works with zoom and video calls etc.
You could buy a WiFi booster to extend it onto the garden just need power to run it but you have that
I live in the middle of nowhere in the US and they haven't opened the cell that would allow me to get a StarLink. I now live with (and pay for) three hot spots, one for each of the big three providers
I am positive that Starlink (Elon Musk) could lower the monthly fee by at least half and still make a profit. The lower the fee the more subscribers he would get.....
You are the 2nd UA-cam creators that I watch that have resorted to Starlink. For the monthly cost I hope you get great reliable service.
Hugs from 🇨🇦
more people in the same area, will hurt the connection quality. In some area's there is a waiting list. Just waiting for more satelites.
Starlink is not making a profit yet! The cost of building and launching satellites is still very high. It will only make a profit if it gets into the high frequency stock trading market, where it can charge thousands for its services.
@@glenn65 a waiting list means that either there is not yet any ground stations in your area or that the service is already oversubscribed! The second is bad news and the first is the precursor to the second🙃😆
@@Techa-lo2dc There is , not yet, satelite coverage, in that area.
I know from people in the US, they order starlink from a "non waiting list area" and then move it to their area
(where a waiting list is) , the result is : lower internet speeds, up and down.
Most professional traders already use fiber internet, which is fast enough for (automated ) trading.
With the war in Ukraine and last week Iran, Elon Musk gave this area's priority, because internet is a problem there.
It’s beta, that’s why it’s expensive.
