Your gardens are the neatest and most organized. So envious to be in a climate where you can grow all year round. To be able to harvest salad greens whenever you want is a dream. Look forward to every video you put out.

Hey Folks, hope you are both well. Any chance of a quick run through your drip irrigation in a future garden video please? Also, with carrots, we have found that interplanting with leeks completely stops carrot fly, onions didn't work but leeks did. All the best to you.

We didn’t film the irrigation setup at the time, but we did do a write up and live walk around in our members club.
We’ll probably do a YT video when we do an upgrade to the system - including hooking it up to our well and rain/grey water collection, but that’s a couple of years away yet

Your portuguese accent is improving so much, well done!! The word couve is a tricky one to know the gender, because it doesn't end with "o" (male) or "a" (female). It's one of those words the you just need to memorise the gender and it's a female word, which means if you write an adjective after the noun couve you need to write it ending with and "a". So it will be couve roxa.
    Chard is acelga. 😊😊😊

Oh man you can never get out of a garden center without buying much more than you came for. Theyre just the best shop. Things that came into my mind watching this video: I really like to grow kale and black cabbage over winter. They can easily handle cooler temperatures and frost, look beautiful and taste great. If there are nettles on your property you might look into making your own nettle manure. Really easy to do and might be a good addition to compost as a diy fertilizer. Hope the carrots will work. Many people say that they dont like being transplanted and are better direct-sown. Guess youll find out ;)

@@flowersflowers473 ye you should keep it covered and position it wisely (not next to houses or regarding wind direction). But its manageable and worth it.

Good luck with your labeling. I gave up on plastic labels and a Sharpe on all outside garden plants. The sun faded them out here in Tennessee and after a few weeks, it was like I had never written on them. I only use them for starting my plants indoors or on the porch now. I invested in some good stainless steel labels and a garden pen from Amazon for the garden; they work really well. Hope you have better luck than I did with the plastic ones. Your garden looks really nice.

Loved your portuguese! Your accent is very very good!
    Just a little correction, FYI:
Couve roxa (not roxo), couve is feminin, like cebola, despite not ending in an "A". The words ending in "E" are very tricky, some are male, some are female, there's no rule...
Francês only has one accent (you got it right the first time, lol), the "hat". The "Ç" can only come before an "A" or an "O", never before a "E". Because the regular "C" before an A or O sounds like a "K", so you need to use the "Ç" to sound like "SS", instead of "K". A normal "C" before an "E" always sounds like "SS".
And lastly Coração, does not have an "U" in it. (some portuguese people make that mistake as well, don't worry :) )
I'm very proud of you! Your Portuguese has come a long way, and I can't believe you can actually write quite accurately.
Oh, Pimentos and Pimentas.... both exist... Usually we use pimentAs to refer to spices, like black, white, green, etc, peppers. And pimentOs to like bell peppers, padón peppers...
I guess pimenta/s is for the ones you grind and use as a spice, and pimento/s to the ones you can actually eat the flesh.
Keep it on! Love your channel!

    • @mishinha
      @mishinha Рік тому

yeah! My "guess" is that pimenta, being a feminine word, refers to the smaller produce whilst pimento, being masculine, refers to bigger items. 😃

You mentioned how your collard greens grow so fast. Do know that Portugal has the perfect soil to grow collard greens. “Caldo verde” soup is popular in Portugal. It makes a very healthy soup, made with collard greens. Also, if you cut them up, add some water and a bit of flour, your chickens will love them. This will keep your chickens healthy. Love your show!

Can’t remember if you have an oven. Here in Canada we grate our zucchini (courgettes), squeeze out excess liquid, then bake zucchini bread or chocolate zucchini cakes. When it was too hot and I couldn’t stand to turn on the oven, I’d grate the zucchini and freeze it, to pull and bake in winter. Never occurred to me that you can make wine with zucchini!!!!!

Great work again! Why not plant in between existing plants. And carrots can grow with almost anything. Plant root veg together with stuff that grows above the soil. That way you have much more space. Also the broad beans can be sown much closer, like 15 cm each way. But your garden looks great! Wish our growing season as that long! 😊 ……ah, saw later you did some of it😅

Love your relaxed attitude and methodical approach! just a fyi don't stand on your no dig beds and a lot of the annual salads etc you can just cut at ground level and let the roots break down and open up the soil. This is also the best option for legumes as they fix nitrogen from the air on their roots, so leaving them is more beneficial. Keep up the good work! much

Fantastic garden progress!!! I learn so much from your channel. My winter garden consists of 3-5 feet of snow and ice!!! So my fall gardening consists of planting trees and bulbs. The rest of my gardening continues in the Spring. I start plants/seedlings inside in mid-March. Plants go outside end of May/early June. Do you plant rainbow chard??? It is so pretty!!! I am planning to build a garden cage totally wrapped in fine wire caging to prevent critters from raiding my food sources!!! I am thinking of attaching a greenhouse/garden shed to the end of my garden cage. I love how full and rich your gardens look!!! I have plenty of compost made from my forest but I also add compost from the garden shop for the same reasons as you. 😁❤️❤️❤️🎶🎶🎶👍👍👍👏👏👏🍂🍁🇨🇦

Compost comment. I'm sure you know this but I shall say it anyway. Nettles are packed with nutrients which is why people make nettle tea. But, they are also good for adding to your compost pile as they will release those nutrients as they break down. They are also gòod for putting into planting beds/holes/troughs or whatever. Cut some of the leaves off a shove a bunch of them under whatever you are planting. Voila ! a natural slow release organic fertilizer for free. Comfrey has similar properties. Thanks for the info about moles and alliums, I counted 60 odd molehills in the lawn recently.

@@MAKEDOGROW Well, that's a first. A shortage of nettles. We are in mid west France and it's nettles a go-go here. We have an especially lush and vigorous patch on top of the filter bed for the fosse.(septic tank). I'm hoping that the forthcoming chickens will munch on them, the interweb fountain of knowledge assures me they do eat nettles so we could have some rather chubby chicks. Should you feel so inclined, you can see the nettles and much more ( collection of hens, construction of chicken run, pizza oven, raised beds etc) on my soon to be launched channel. 🙂

So enjoyed this video as I'm off to sunny Qld all winter this year and will be putting my beds to sleep, so I got my 'fix' of winter veg sowing and planting. So happy to see you placing boards over your carrot seeds - just don't expect anything green when you lift them. Your pathetic looking sprouts will be more white and yellow and somewhat flattened. But within a few days of light they'll be upright and green - suggest you prop up the boards for a few days to acclimatise them.
Hard to tell but I tend to think you may be sowing your seeds a bit too deep which can affect germination - a 1/4" is extremely shallow.
Just thought I'd also throw in that you don't need to be concerned about pine bark on your paths and acidity. Yes, pine bark is acidic, but the amount likely to leach into the ground is not only minimal, but your alkaline clay soil may even benefit. If you were directly mulching around alkaline loving plants, then that could be an issue. So if it's cheap and readily available, keep on using it - it's never been a problem for me, and if I recall correctly, not for Charles Dowding either. Love everything you're growing over winter but I didn't hear you mention swedes - they're a favourite of mine. Oh, and I love that you're leaving roots (mostly) to feed the soil - so few people seem to do this - such a waste. Well done you two- looking forward to your harvests and how well things went.
Lastly, re: your beans - you significantly disturbed that soil and with it being alkaline, would not have suited beans. Suggest adding a generous amount of compost where you plan to grow them next season as it's the best way to gradually lower the ph. All the best.

On the legginess of your plant starts, I purchased a two pack of LED shop lights that put out 5000 lm and use about three dollars worth of electricity per year. Think this could easily work with your solar system, and negate some of those issues. They were about US$25 for two, so about $12.50 to cover 3 to 4 of Charles Dowding‘s CD 60 plug trays. That’s what I use for my starts.

Hi there 😊 chard is ‘acelga’. I think Agriloja has already garlic bulbs. Not sure if it’s far from where you live. Your Portuguese sounds great! Tip pimento - veggy / pimenta - spice … then you can add after the type. Pimento verde 🫑 pimenta preta (black pepper)

This is my favorite way to freeze cabbage.
    Homemade Freezer Cole Slaw Recipe
A homemade freezer cole slaw recipe made with fresh garden cabbage, sugar, vinegar, and water. It is seasoned with celery and mustard seed.
    Serves: 15
    • 1 medium head of fresh cabbage
    • 2 cups sugar
    • 1 cup white vinegar
    • ½ cup water
    • 1 teaspoon celery seed
    • 1 teaspoon mustard seed
    1. Grate the cabbage or put through a blender or food processor and drain well. Place in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
    2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, vinegar, water, celery seed, and mustard seed. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Let cool.
    3. Pour over cabbage and stir to moisten.
    4. Refrigerate for 6-8 hours and allow flavors to marinate.
    5. Save out enough for 1-2 meals and place the remainder of the coleslaw in freezer bags or plastic containers and freeze.

    The garden looks great!
In my experience (limited to growing garlic in the Netherlands) supermarket garlic grows just fine when you plant it. You may indeed have to fill it in the fridge first as Portugal has less for days than the Netherlands does.

A tip for better germination of carrot seeds I learned recently, is to put them in a little of moist sand in a glass jar or in a little box. Leave them for 3-7 days, they will start to germinate and can then be sowed. Also the sand helps with equal distribution when sowing, because it is easily visible…

    @MAKE. DO. GROW.
I'm sorry I only saw the video now. I wanted to tell you Guy that it is not good to put so much pressure on a young seedling and in general on plants that are planted. Good watering will already tighten the soil to the block of the seedling and remove the air. This way the plant is more likely to put out new roots faster. Strong clamping will make it difficult for the plant to develop roots. I made several attempts in this matter and this method is very successful. Thank you very much and I hope you will help with this tip. Iris from Israel.

On wood chip - we are in SW France & by chance came across an arborist who wanted to get rid of wood chip on a regular basis. Apparently disposing of wood chip is an on going problem for all arborists (at least here) as they have to pay to dump it. He was more than happy to give us a much as we could take - it was a win win. Maybe check with local arborists?

if you want the wood chips/pine bark to break down throw a few handfuls of urea or any high nitrogen product such as chook crap over it. works wonders.

Someone's got OCD in that garden!?. Lol So neat and tidy, better than my living room!. You might want to look into regenerative gardening or living soil. You never have to weed. You just chop and drop or, use it as mulch. Test your soil microbes, make compost tea and spray this all over, under and around your garden. You will see a massive difference in a few weeks. keep up the good work all the same. Rick

P.S. Carrots should be planted from seed and left in one place. They don't like being replanted or moved once in.

Decades ago I ran across Square Foot Gardening. Although I did not have a space problem and had no intention of double digging, I learned a lot about companion and succession planting. BTW, my father always added sharp builders sand to his carrot bed because they like porous soil.
Guy, if you are gender confused, when it comes to languages, try German. We have three genders which make even less sense than the ones in Romanic languages.
