i've skated since the late 90s and this is the first time ive ever heard Tom Penny speak hahahahaha..a tom penny sighting was like spotting a unicorn back in those days lol
fr when I started skating back in oh... '98 or '99 I was like a fiend for Penny footage cause I'd see all his decks, wheels and shit in CCS were always top sellers even though he was pretty much inactive at the time, well on film anyway
Yeah it's crazy how little people hear him speak yet he sounds really smart and insightful. I could understand not talking much if u don't got much to say but with Penny it seems like he's got boatloads of knowledge up his sleeve. Would love to hear more from him.
You can hear the quality of his character in his voice, a very nice person so they say. If you listen carefully and observe, he sounds like an old thespian stage actor who has been there and done that, able to come in and nail the scene in one go.
My favorite all time skateboarder, cleanest skating style ever imo. I have seen him skate a few times back in the late 90s at demos around southern cali and once at a competition, he was not in the competition though, but, at that competition he didn't bring a skateboard and had loafer shoes on ( like docker dress shoes ) higher than a kite too, well anyways, he borrowed clyde singletons board and was doing his HUGE signature tricks on this massive wise mans ramp fatter and cleaner than anyone was doing during the whole competition and he was in dress shoes using someones board lol.. Talked to him that day too and back then he had the deepest voice I ever heard before still til this day that I can remember, I could not understand really anything he was saying either. But he was certainly high as heck.
I did actually get to meet Tom Penny once at Huntington Surf Shop in Huntington BEach, CA. I can't even explain how much I love this guy's skateboarding style. So, standing there, with him, I was blown away. The amount of times I have watched his skate videos and rewound them to watch again and again is uncountable. Just watching this guy's skate parts and this interview helps me to really appreciate life. Tom Penny is worth more than a thousand words. I never skated with him in person, but to have skated with him at the old HB park would have been like climbing Mt. Everest for some people- it would have been that surreal to me. MUCH RESPECT TO TOM PENNY!
Didn't realize that was his first cover. That was the first skate magazine I ever bought. Remember bringing it home and how excited I was to look through it. Wish I still had it but I think it fell apart after several years.
I remember the first time I saw his picture in a TWS mag, it came with a little description saying "Tom Penny,...you will hear a lot more about this guy in the years to come." or something close to that. The picture was a massive switch ollie over a wood construction barrier. Well after all these years the description couldn't be more right. Tom's influence and contribution on street skateboarding is something to remember.
This man is soo amazing had the chanse too have a beer and smoke a jay with him in barcelona in may this year the happyest day of my life just chilling on macba drinking and talking shieet love you man peace from norway
Had opportunity to skate with him in uk in 90s from 91 onwards. I remember thinking if him and rowley got to America, they could take over, and they did. The thing with uk in 90s, if u managed to skate to a high level there, then you were definitely a good skater. Even the better spots could be crusty as hell. It would make you a better skater.
Had the pleasure to see him skate at a flip demo 10 plus years ago. Was in my early twenties at the time and remember standing next to him waiting to drop in and he just gave me a nod and cruised off will never forget that.
I seen him on the Feast Tour in Tinley Park. He didn’t skate but he came in for a few mins in a side door. I just happened to be right there. My friend got a pic with him and he signed my flip “friends” shirt. I’ll never forget
Wow as a man of few interviews this was wonderful to hear him speak really clears out all the questions I had and shined a positive light just great stuff!
Don't know how I missed this. Once again - thank you Transworld. Also I'm really glad that I seem to have gotten his last message before hearing the interview. Even in responding he was thinking like "come on it's obvious, I take it easy and have fun that's it."
That era had some super gnarly talented skaters. Ali Boulala,,Greco,Muska,Kasper,Gall,Getz,Carrol,PJ,Appleyard,, that era clearly took skateworld by storm..I'd say Tom penny was right there @ the forefront with those dudes..and I left out like a 100 rippers like Marko,Creager and Senn etc.... wish they coulda skated now with the big money,, Penny and Wray deserve more then just 40 year olds respecting them on message boards....
skating has changed in different way's then we think..I'm 25yrs old and i still rock the penny/smolik/gershon look..they were my favorites..and still are among the 100s of pros that have dominated, I now go to the skate park (and i suck pretty bad) do my little kickflips and nolies and pop shuvs nose slide the box bomb almost waist high ollies on the pyrimids and the 13yr olds even if there 10 times better than me shit 100 times they stop what there doing and watch and give me props for landing just anything. my clothes are 3 times the size of there's and they like the style..ask about my shoes and how long i have enjoyed the sport. i stand out now and its cool. guys my age then and now talk shit if you cant flip into a grind down a set..and your not worth talking to..it sucks. everyone i grew up with quit skating yrs ago and im trying to teach my kids how to ride arround and just have a good time tricks come l8tr on when your ready..live free and skate...for FUN..not the $...peace..
Definitely brought being humble to the game. And that is why he is one of my favorite pro's. So glad I got to experience the full hype of Penny growing up in the 90's. He influenced every skater's style either conscious or unconsciously. I know I started skating different after seeing him for the 1st time in a 411. Best times in skateboard history, imho.
I had that Transworld mag with him on the cover when I skated in 7th grade 15 years ago, I remeber him, he was so dope with style in the videos, He still rips tho, kills it
Best fakie roll way EVER!! Tom Penny WAS A HUUUGE influence on me. I'd say Jason Lee was the 1st skater to show me what 'STYLE' meant and Tomy Penny was the evolution of that.. *Pretty much now it wasn't about backside flips over a manhole, it was backside flip over the manhole without the sketch. And that only comes from repetition... **For that I'm in debt.... ***Tom,Penny and Supra PLEASE make throwback shoe to the eS days...Man those eS shoes we're sooo D.A.F.
Tom Penny was THE legend when I started skating in 96 in the UK, such an inspiration. This is the first time I've heard him speak! Reminds me of my mates. That style tho!!
He majored in advanced transitional physics on vertical planes and wrote a dissertation on the outlook of modern style in Western culture. Very well versed gent.
Totally unique and original personality and perspective, which is very fitting given his legendary status and accomplishments as a skateboarder. Must be pretty much a genius to some extent.
agreed... At the end of the day as Jeremy Klein hates to say, it's all bout fun. *Learning/mastering tricks at faster speeds. ~to~ Learning to float kickflips. we called em "Slow flips" instead of catching at highest point...
If you listen carefully and observe, he sounds like an old thespian stage actor who has been there and done that, able to come in and nail the scene in one go.
*rings a bell in bed* "Penny! I'd like to request a switch frontside flip for breakfast in bed today!" *Penny switch f/s flips over my bed on a mini mega ramp I have set up on each side of my king size bed (made of old skate decks)* "Delicious."
this is like a subtle way of transworld conveying a message to the skate world: that it's better than all mags because its "influenced" the careers of some of the best pros.
Idk why I was under the impression that this guy was a super stoned all the time dude that wasn’t very bright, but he’s super well spoken, thoughtful and it seems his words are chosen, like he makes an effort to maybe speak in only positivity.
FUCKING RESPECT MAN!! He hit the nail on the head when talking about just having fun and not worrying about other people's thoughts. just enjoy and that's it. whatever level your at as long as your on a skateboard then your the Don!
i've skated since the late 90s and this is the first time ive ever heard Tom Penny speak hahahahaha..a tom penny sighting was like spotting a unicorn back in those days lol

I couldn’t have said that better myself haha!!
Same here. Started in 92 and this is the first time I ever heard him speak. Not what I expected at all, wasn't sure how I felt about it all haha
Yeah it's crazy how little people hear him speak yet he sounds really smart and insightful. I could understand not talking much if u don't got much to say but with Penny it seems like he's got boatloads of knowledge up his sleeve. Would love to hear more from him.
Same.
Was expecting a stoner, couldn't have been more wrong.
The dude is smart and can speak
Really surprised, in a good way.
This is the Definition of “The Man, The Myth, The Legend.”
I'm glad my right ear now knows Tom's favorite influential skaters
You can hear the quality of his character in his voice, a very nice person so they say. If you listen carefully and observe, he sounds like an old thespian stage actor who has been there and done that, able to come in and nail the scene in one go.

I can't imagine what skateboarding would be today without Tom. Peace everyone.
+Alex Catto stiff :D
Alex Catto doinn
the fact that Tom cites Daewon and Danny Way, makes him even more likeable...
Didn't realize that was his first cover. That was the first skate magazine I ever bought. Remember bringing it home and how excited I was to look through it. Wish I still had it but I think it fell apart after several years.
Death Box opened Stamford Skate Park back in '90. Used to bunk off school to go down there. Those boys were my heroes growing up.
I saw him skate in Oxford 20 years ago, he had unbelievable skills.
Glad he is still skating, sounds uber chilled.
This man is soo amazing had the chanse too have a beer and smoke a jay with him in barcelona in may this year the happyest day of my life just chilling on macba drinking and talking shieet love you man peace from norway
that's dope for real.
That’s fucking awesome
"...maybe just some nice tricks with a nice style..." Goat.
Had opportunity to skate with him in uk in 90s from 91 onwards. I remember thinking if him and rowley got to America, they could take over, and they did. Had a Tom Penny Flip board years ago. Wish I had his skills to go with it... absolute hero
he used to float around Radlands in Northampton making everything he did look incredibly easy, one of the best styles I ever saw even back then
BEST skater to EVER live!!! BY FAR! THE BEST!
He speaks with such respect, for skateboarding, for others. A good man, and obviously a natural skater.
Had the pleasure to see him skate at a flip demo 10 plus years ago. Was in my early twenties at the time and remember standing next to him waiting to drop in and he just gave me a nod and cruised off will never forget that.
I would've geeked the hell out no cap.
Sean Saxena I did just tried to keep it inside and look cool. 😂 geoff rowley was stood next to him too.
I seen him on the Feast Tour in Tinley Park. He didn’t skate but he came in for a few mins in a side door. I just happened to be right there. My friend got a pic with him and he signed my flip “friends” shirt. I’ll never forget
his voice is so epic
Amazing personality and great speech :) He is one of my favourites, that's for sure.

So gracious of Tom to share these words about Transworld. Class act.
I loved everything tom penny when i was a kid. One of the best skateboarders so far.
That era had some super gnarly talented skaters.

He’s from Oxford
Proffessor Of Shredding The Gnar Gnar.
Tom Penny is a legend! He needs way more cred!
Tom Penny has definitely helped me enjoy skateboarding to a greater extent.
wow, didn't expect him to sound like that at all! so dope. Such a smart dude.
Such a gentleman.
I have been skateboarding for over a decade and this is the first time I have ever heard his voice.
Pay CLOSE attention to what he says from 4:00 on...
THAT is what skateboarding is all about. Everything else is stupid bullshit.
Frank Stein yup
agreed...
At the end of the day as Jeremy Klein hates to say, it's all bout fun.
*Learning/mastering tricks at faster speeds.
~to~ Learning to float kickflips. we called em "Slow flips"
instead of catching at highest point...
Tom Penny is that dude!!! The cleanest skater ever! His kickflip, and FS Flip is the nicest ever. (Do love Andrew Reynolds as a close second)
This dude has the sickest, most effortless skating style. Respect.
I WILL get a picture with this legend and his autograph before he or I dies! Long live Penny.
Surprised he mention Quim Cardona, he’s an nyc legend

Tom Penny: The Voice of Skateboarding.
Fuck yeah I had that issue of Transworld with TP on the front.
This is what Class looks in its purest form.
FUCKING RESPECT MAN!! He hit the nail on the head when talking about just having fun and not worrying about other people's thoughts. just enjoy and that's it. whatever level your at as long as your on a skateboard then your the Don!

I love Penny so much
So goddamn humble. This is what it's about everyone. Take notes.
Never heard him speak before. Damn, he has a deep voice.
