Thanks David. I've just spent hours trying to get my Sandisk SSD to connect to my 15. My wife's ipad picked it up straight away and left me groaning with disappointment.
You’re very welcome. It’s really disappointing, Apple obviously have the ability to allow the phone to supply the current/power, as the iPad proves. Also, given that Apple designed the phone to work with external SSDs, as in, the function of recording ProRes are 4K 60FPS requires a fast external SSD. You’d think that given that requirement for video recording that they’d have allowed the higher power on the USB port. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarryI’m trying to connect my toshiba canvio basics to my iphone 12 pro. I have the adapter and even an usb hub, but it won’t detect it. I used my relatives iphone 12 pro max to see if it would appear on a different device and it did for some reason? Do you know what the problem may be? Thank you. If you need extra information please ask. Thank you
I've encountered the same issue with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I tested it with five different SSDs using an RTL9210B case. After spending 4 hours testing various USB 3.2, USB4, and Thunderbolt cables, I've concluded that the 4.5W output on the iPhone's USB-C port is insufficient for the 2TB SSD. However, the 1TB SSD works fine for connecting and file management on my iPhone Pro Max. Interestingly, when I tried the same 2TB SSDs with the RTL9210B case on my iPad Pro M1 and iMac 27, they worked flawlessly.
That’s interesting, thanks. Yes, the limiting factor would appear to be the overall power draw. Using something like a lower capacity Gen 3 SSD, such as a P3, may be just about OK with the combined power usage of the enclosure. However, certain larger capacity Gen 3 SSDs with a slightly higher power draw, probably tips it over the edge for total combined power draw with the power draw from the enclosure being included. In my experience, no Gen 4 SSDs have worked with any of my enclosures. There maybe some combinations of Gen 4 and an enclosures that don’t exceed the maximum power draw, but I’ve not found any. Yes, the iPad Pro and most Macs will be fine. These are using Thunderbolt ports, which are also USB compatible. These ports are capable of supplying around 15w of power. Thank you for your comment 👍 Cheers, Dave.
Thank you for your message. I've conducted tests on 1 unit of a 2TB Gen4 SSD, 1 unit of a 2TB Gen3 SSD, and 3 units of Gen3 1TB SSDs using my RTL9210B enclosure. The Gen3 2TB SSD doesn't work well with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I also tested it using a powered dock case to connect the SSD enclosure and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and everything works correctly with my 2TB Gen4 and 2TB Gen3 SSDs. Therefore, I've concluded that the iPhone 15 Pro Max cannot recognize 2TB SSDs without an external power supply. I believe that additional testing with more sample units is necessary to pinpoint the underlying issue. It could be related to the 2TB SSDs not receiving sufficient power through the 4.5W USB-C connection on the iPhone, or there might be potential compatibility issues between Gen3 and Gen4, which could be causing the iPhone 15 Pro Max to have difficulty recognizing the SSD. Thank you for your sharing.
I have 3 SSD drives and different cables that i tested with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. The two Samsung T5 and T3 work flawlessly no matter what cable i use. They appear within 1 or 2 seconds and browsing files and folders is fast and smooth. I recorded multiple sub-30 seconds ProRes 4K, 60 fps videos on the T5 without any issues. Once the recording is stopped the thumbnail appears instantly. It takes a second or two before the first time but playback is smooth. My third SSD is a SanDisk Extreme Pro 2 TB. When i use the standard braided 1m cable, i have no issues. I also have no issues when using an Apple 2m USB-C to USB-C cable. But no matter how many times I use Apple’s new Thunderbolt 4, 1m cable or Anker 240W, 40Gb/s 1m cable, i get “This accessory uses too much power” message. Bottom line: try different cables (even cheaper ones) before changing your SSD. I hope this helps.
Hi. That’s excellent information thanks 👍 This will be great for others reading the comments 👍 BTW, I use a CalDigit TB4 cable and it’s perfect. If you check my recent videos, TB4 cable vs USB C cable with an S23 Ultra, the CalDigit cable works perfectly with that as well. I’m not too sure but I was under the impression that “proper” TB4 cables had to be licensed from Intel, which the CalDigit is. I have another TB4 cable that’s problematic. Maybe there are some out there that don’t adhere and fully comply with all the standards that they should, as TB4 cables are designed to be fully backwards compatible with all the USB-C variations and USB3 protocols and bus speeds/bandwidths. Again, thank you for that valuable information and for freely sharing it 👍 Have a great day. Cheers, Dave.
I have the same experience. when using the thunderbolt cable, I can’t access the SSD. Using a standard USB cable I can access the drive without any problems.
Apple is doing on purpose to force you to buy more internal storage, otherwise everyone would buy the basic storage and then try to do what you’re explaining. It’s despicable
Yes, Apple force you to buy upgrades on nearly every product that they do, where the basic model would be great except for one thing that slows it down, which is why you upgrade immediately. They really are sneaky. For instance, with their desktop and laptop computers they come with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage as their basic option. Both of which are useless starting points in this day and age and force you to upgrade to at least 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. Cheers, Dave.
This video is really helpful. I was just now discussing with other fellow iPhone 15 Pro owners on a forum who also have the ACASIS enclosures, some of us couldn't get it to mount like you showed, and some had it mounting once but never again. iOS unlike macOS does not have many means to trouble shoot so your video saved us the time to dig further. All in all I'd say this iPhone is disappointing, the heating and stuff like power output are limiting the potentials in the features that type-C is supposed to bring.
Hi. Yes, there are limitations that are starting to show very quickly in practical use. As you say, the file management in iOS and iPadOS is very limited compared to MacOS or Windows etc. In fact, my personal opinion is that the file management is almost next to useless and not at all helpful. Even Android has better file management. I will try and do some quicker videos about very specific storage stuff, which may be helpful to others. I’ve got another ACASIS TB4/USB4 being sent to me from ACASIS and also what looks to be the perfect USB-C hub for the iPhone 15. If you are interested in workflow stuff for video, keep an eye on my channel. However, for now, I agree, the 15 does seem to be a bit disappointing and I can confirm serious thermal issues and throttling with gameplay, which would be similar to the types of system stress as a good video application or any application that pushes the system. Cheers, Dave.
Apple specifies that the external ssd must have a power draw of less 4.5W. I had the same problem with a SanDisk extreme pro and check the tests on that it can peak around 5W which then caused intermittent problems. With a Samsung T7 which peaks below 4.5W, I have had no problems at all. I'm sure this is more of an issue with the phone than the ipads given the smaller battery and less peak capacity. They're likely limiting the power out of the USB-C connector in order to prevent the chance of dropping voltage to the phone's processor and causing glitches.
Hi. You are very welcome. Yes, the first thing that I thought was the problem was the drive but it is the phone that's the problem. There's now been a lot more people reporting the same issues on a few of my videos. Cheers, Dave.
I have a small JEYI high speed enclosure, inside I've placed a corsair mini 2230 nvme 2.0. A youtube video suggested that set up but it had a kingston drive instead of corsair. For some reason this won't show up in my storage. I dont wanna use an using an external hub because that would defeat my whole purpose of this set up. I'm a tad frustrated tbh.
I found this also on my own, trying to test with an NVME SSD and a Sabrent enclosure. It appeared on the iPhone 15 ProMax for a few minutes, then disappeared. Tried switching cables and still no luck. The Sabrent enclosure became extremely hot and I believe that the iPhone 15 ProMax may somehow be thinking it needs to charge (not just power) the enclosure. This is the 2nd external hard drive I've tested with the new phone, so definitely something wrong with the iPhone 15 hardware and/or OS.
Hi, Jeff. It actually gets worse than you think. Check out this video for even more example of the problem and what's causing it. It's a very long, detailed video, just skip through into the tests and you'll see the same issue that your having ua-cam.com/video/Uk-3yp9Zc3E/v-deo.html Cheers, Dave.
I am waiting to get my iPhone 15 Pro, since supplies are limited. I understand what you are presenting in this video, but I am not expecting the 15 Pros to have that much power to run an SSD bigger than Samsung T7 or Sandisk Extreme... Thank you for the work! I have 2 ACASIS TBU405 enclosures, 1 with WD SN570 2TB NVME & the other WD SN770 2TB NVME. And a third ACASIS enclosure with USB C Hub with PD Port (Model: CM073). With your test, I will be using the Hub mounted to a cage for shooting longer ProRes Videos... I will purchase a Samsung T7 2TB for times where I won't use the cage. FYI: For this to work properly away from power? Use a PD battery bank rated 100W or more, I do not have a recommendation at this moment. The only issue I see with shooting using a SSD? Battery health after a year. The iPhone has now become a true Multi Tool Computing Device! With a smaller battery, compared to the iPad Pro M1/M2. But you can edit your footage on the iPad in the field.
I have the same problem with my Asus Arion ssd enclosure with iPhone 15 Pro Max. The connection cable is the usb c to c 3.1 cable comes with the enclosure. I found some video on youtube that the same ssd enclosure can be detected by both 15 and 15 pro but the cable seems not the one with the enclosure. In my experience, the enclosure can be detected only once amoug many times of plug and unplug with the RGB lighting effect is on everytimes. When I plugged the enclosure to my m2 iPad pro, it pumps up immediately. I am going to buy a tb3/4 cable. If it doesn't help, seems it is a software bug more than a power issue.
just tried to connect the enclosure by the usbc cable comes with the new iphone. (As i only want to try the connectivity) It works, and the mp4 inside the ssd can be played. After I swapped the cable to the the enclosure, it doesn't work again, even I swapped back to the apple usb c to c cable. Meanwhile, usb c dongle can be detected all the time. Tried many times restarting the iPhone still doesn't work.
Hi. That sounds like a real pain. I doubt it's a software issue, at least not in my situation. If it were software related then you would expect the drive to not be seen in any configuration. However, when connected via the hub it works. This does seem to suggest a power issues, as in, not enough power direct from the iPhone's USB-C port. Cheers, Dave.
Unfortunately, there are quite a few drives that the iPhone 15 won't work with. This is mostly due to the phone not being able to supply enough power. Cheers, Dave.
Just as a caution; I also use an external Acasis enclosure and per their support none of their current products support a gen4 nVME drive at rated speed. I have a gen4 drive in my enclosure and it is only supported as a gen3 drive.
The enclosure does not need to be Gen 4 compatible as Thunderbolt 4 can't match the speed of Gen 4 anyway. Even Gen 3 is faster than the data bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4.
@@DavidHarry Speeds and Feeds; The iPhone 15 Pro is not currently a thunderbolt device. It does require that the cable support 10gbs and the drive support 2.2gbs. Usb3/4 support 40gbs (usb4 gets you enhanced video support).Gen3/Gen4 nVme devices run at the PCIE speeds of 3.5gbs and 7 gbs so either should be fine (the aacasys quoted speed is the enclosure, not the drive)
Agh this sucks, as some people commented I have used an external SSD once and it worked , today I tried again and it no longer appears now, but if I use a dock connected to the iPhone and plug the external SSD it works
It's definitely an iPhone problem. I just got the ACASIS 10 in 1 hub with SSD enclosure, and a Samsung 2TB SSD. I tried connecting the iPhone directly to the SSD hub, and the hub would not power on, I tried with a 65W Ugreen charger because this particular ACASIS hub comes with power PD, but guess what? the drive still would not show up, the only difference now is that the hub is powered on, and the cute little iPhone is charging...how convenient 😂 perhaps it's the 65W being shared with the hub that requires at least 60W, and iPhone taking maybe say 15W or maybe it's taking it's full 27W because it's coming from a 65W PD. The final twist is I tried connecting the hub directly to a Samsung A73 that charges at max 25W, and the hub powered up, and also the SSD showed up on the device like it's supposed to, and fast. 😕
I’ve also had similar problems. I use a dock that has its own 100w power supply, so easily enough to charge the phone and power connected peripherals like an SSD. With one of my ACASIS and SSD combinations, the phone still won’t see the drive and that definitely isn’t to do with lack of power. I’m still looking into all this mess and will do another video soon. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry I got a multiport and an adapter, but my external hard drive still isn’t connecting to my Iphone 12 pro. It works for another iPhone 12 pro max, just not mine? How does it work with another iphone, but not mine? Makes no sense. Do you have any tips to resolve this?
Hi, Julius. Yes, it's definitely a power issue that can't sustain the overall current. I suspect the iPad Pro has no issue because I think the standard for Thunderbolt is 5V 15W, probably because Thunderbolt is a newer standard. However, the iPad Mini can do it and it's only USB-C and should also be only 5V 5W. There's nothing that I've used this SSD with that can't operate it, except the iPhone. What's more weird is that the iPhone can do reverse charging, which must be really low and slow for whatever it's charging (probably usually the Apple earbuds). Cheers, Dave.
Great video! Using a SanDisk 1 TB external drive, I was having no problems for months until just recently when my iPhone 15 Pro Max would not identify the drive. I fully charged the phone and now it is working again, but I am very concerned about this happening while I am shooting an important job. Do I understand you correctly that purchasing a powered USB-C hub will circumvent the problem? If so, can you point me to a link on Amazon or Best Buy. Also does it make any sense that it started working again after the phone was fully charged?
Thanks Dave, I'm just about to buy the new iPhone 15 Pro max and already have the Acasis SSD, I am planning to connect the two!!! Very worrying as I don't want to have to put a separate power supply into the loop. Question: have you tried this with other SSD's without power supplies? any recommendations? thanks again
Hi, Peter. Do you have the exact same ACASIS enclosure as this one? I only ask as they do make a few that look very similar. I have another ACASIS TB4/USB4 that I have for my MacBook Pro which I will try later and if it works I’ll post a quick video later, it’s the one in this video ua-cam.com/video/sV9EDKc5zpk/v-deo.htmlsi=JoBgqOKY-DnkvYX_ I’m also wondering if it could be the actual NVME SSD inside the enclosure, I’ll have to test for that. The only other SSD I’ve tried is a SATA one with a Samsung 870 EVO 4TB which was inside a SATA to USB-C enclosure, that worked fine, although, the speed didn’t feel right. I may end up posting a number of videos about SSDs etc. but just do quick ones for very specific drive combinations. If you’re going to be using the Blackmagic Camera app, keep an eye on my channel as I’ll be doing some very specific setup videos. I’ve already recently done one for the iPad Pro that you may find interesting. I’m also being sent what looks like the perfect USB C hub for the iPhone 15 from ACASIS. This is not specifically for powering external drives but because it’s got all kinds of ports and connections on it, HDMI, Ethernet, audio I/O etc. and might be great for a desktop setup for the phone. Cheers, Dave.
Well it’s says “4K at 60 frames per second (fps), iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max only, when using an external storage device that supports speeds of at least 220MB per second and maximum power draw of 4.5W” so your SSD must be drawing more energy then that. I would try to test with multimeter, maybe it would be enough to remove that diode to lower consumption and make that SSD work
Here is what I have seen. I can plug the NVMe in and it works.... once. Then every time I plug it back in, nothing. But if I restart the phone, it will work ONCE again. On another note, my wireless mic receiver that plugs into lightning, will NOT work when plugged into USBC with an adapter. But it did work the first time I tried. CRAZY!
@Nekokotoo has identified one solution. If second plugging isn’t successful, it is needed to plug the SSD to a computer which is capable of « Ejecting » properly (only Mac as far as I saw because neither Windows nor the Iphone allow ejecting, at least in the case of an enclosed NVMe SSD like mine) So plug the faulty SSD on Mac, click on eject, unplug, plug on the Iphone and it will appear again. Thanks @Nekokotoo !
I like all your videos, you help me alot. Do you know why when I transfer photos and videos to my external ssd the format of the file are AAE and If you know how to change that format thank you
Hi Ronny. I'm not too sure but I think AAE may be like a metadata files and not the actual media file. Which if it is, would mean that you would also need the original media file that the AAE is referencing. Sorry I can't be more help. Cheers, Dave.
Hello David, nice video. I’m having troubles with the Pro res recordings, when I record 4k60fps pro res and play the video on windows or my video editor it gets very choppy, and even after rendering the video lags randomly on the exact same timeframes for some reason. This has not happened to me before with this kind of chunky files, I have a pretty beefy workstation with a 4090 (windows) so it doesn’t make sense that my PC is causing the problems. I also bought a 10gbps usb c, and I’m using a small 1tb sandisk portable drive (520mb/s). I don’t know if I should upgrade to a better drive, maybe that’s the main problem. Do you happen to know what might be causing this? Cheers!
Im interested in the Acasis enclosure and ran into your video. Could it be that the cooling fan is requiring more power draw? I read that you can turn it off by pressing the fan button. I wonder if that would lower the power req and connect to the drive?
Hi. No, it’s not the fan, even with the fan off it still spent work. it’s because the SSD is Gen 4 and the iPhone can’t send enough power for the combined requirement of the enclosure and the SSD.
Samsung T7 works with iPhone 15 Pro Max, however, there's still issue with data transfer rate when recording ProRes Log at 4k60 even though T7 is USB 3.2 Gen 2 device.
@@SiriaK Actually, the iPhone still doesn’t operate at full 1250MB/s (10Gb/s) even with the fastest drive possible. Using the drive in this video, which is about 2800MB/s, with a powered hub. The iPhone still doesn’t operate at 1250MB/s (10Gb/s). Also, the iPhone can’t power a fast drive directly, as fast drives use NVME Gen4 and the iPhone won’t operate with Gen NVME SSDs, Cheers, Dave.
@@SiriaK iPhone’s internal SSD drive only support about 500 MB/s. It’s the bottle neck in the system. Even if you get the 2500 MB/s external SSD, which will be limited by USB-C 3 10GB/s = 1250 MB/s. And that will be limited by iPhones SSD speed - 500 MB/s.
External SSD’s than draw >5watts will not work on the iPhone 15 since the USB C has a current limitation to protect the port with a Thermal Fuse inside the iPhone 15 An external powered hub is the only way around this issue if you want to use the higher wattage external SSD’s out there
Same thing with the pro max using a Sabrent m.2 enclosure with a Sabrent rocket 4.0 2tb. I guess I need to look for a powered enclosure. I tired an external flash drive and it worked to read files, it freezes up after looking at anything though. Very disappointing considering apple spent half of the pro max trailer showcasing its usefulness in file dumping and dailies.
Hi, Greg. That's super annoying and yes, what was that all about in the video where they were bleating on about the USB-C capabilities for recording externally etc. I think we are going to start finding more drives that wont work. It looks to me as though it may be Gen4 SSDs that are the problem for the phone as it doesn't seem to be able to power the chipset in the enclosure and the NVME SSD. If so, this will be really bad as the only way to get 10Gb/s in transfer speed to an external drive, when dumping internal files, would likely to be to something with a fast NVME in it. There are hardly any USB C drives that will go above 10Gb/s and most are less than 5Gb/s with SATA SSDs in them. I'm not sure that the phone is even capable of being used properly with USB4, which is backwards compatible. While the slower drives are still capable of recording ProRes 4444 4K/60, many people use the faster drives so they can offload the data to their computer faster to edit direct off the drive. Anyway, super annoying. Cheers, Dave.
A big issue for me is that i always review my photos before dumping them on to a PC for editing. Even if i find an SSD that works, i feel like there's a decent chance my data could get corrupted. I'd love to ask an Apple rep what the exact SSD was that they used in the trailer. My best bet; it'll only work well with Red, Ninja or some absurdly expensive proprietary drive. I really hope I'm wrong. @@DavidHarry

5:42 What powered hub did you use? I’m experiencing a similar issue with my Acasis TBU405 NVMe SSD Enclosure (gen 4 SSD) It’s not visible when connected to my iPhone, as well as with other USB 3.1 PCs and 2.0 smart TVs. I am still looking for a cost-effective solition to make it work by using an externally powered hub. Can you suggest any cost effective alternative for that please?
Hi, Andrius. I still have to do som more testing with the powered hub/dock solution. I have had other issues with the iPhone since doing this video and it's not quite as easy as saying ANY powered hub or dock will do. As soon as I am happy to recommend a powered hub/dock that works 100% of the time, I will do a video about it. Sorry I can't be any more specific right now and I do appreciate the frustration of using this phone with external SSDs. Cheers, Dave.
I have a same issue. In my opinion, not enough power is not the cause of it but firmware or something. I have small, sandisk usb-c but it doesn’t recognize it.
If it were firmware then the drive still wouldn’t picked up when connected to the hub but it does. ExFAT makes no difference on my drive, I have two, one APFS for Mac and one ExFAT for Windows etc. Neither are picked up. It’s definitely a power issue. There’s also people saying that some drives connect and then lose connection. Again, this will be a power issue.
Alright, Tone. You’re far from an idiot. Yes, it is something to do with power delivery. Which is proved when using a powered hub or dock because the iPhone then sees the drive. Cheers, Dave.
The Acasis is not usb4 it is thunderbolt 3 titan ridge with a usb3 bridge chip for operation in usb3 mode. Also the Acasis enclosure (without the fan) works with the iPhone. If the enclosure draws too much power then the disk won’t mount.
Then go and tell Acasis that their enclosure isn’t USB4 and TB4 and try telling those on USB4 computers that they aren’t really seeing their data move between their computer and the drive 😆😆😆😆
@@DavidHarry lol I don’t work at their marketing but if you look closely in the macOS system information -> thunderbolt/usb4 section, you will see the Acasis operates in tb3 mode, not usb4. Furthermore if you open the enclosure you will find the tb3 chip. Newer enclosures from Zike and Hyper use the asm2464 usb4 chip and operate in usb4 mode. That being said, the Acasis gets 2800 MB/sec which is deliciously fast. I can’t wait until TB5 doubles that.
Ok I just discovered that if I plug in the ssd to a MacBook or PC and then use the eject option it will work once on the iPhone and then the second time it won’t. If I plug in the Mac again and then eject it works again but only once.
Great discovery indeed ! For the days I have been struggling with different cables to understand why my SSD would discovered only once and then not anymore by the Iphoen PM 15, I can also confirm that Ejecting properly on a Mac will make the SSD be visible once more... Now the issue is you need to have a Mac (mine was dusty but I cleaned it for that purpose) because to my knowledge, (my) PC do(es)n't allow a proper Ejecting my stuff (my config: Corsair MP600 PCIe x4 2TB NVME SSD in a Sabrent EC-NVME enclosure) This is not the end of the fight however because once discovered again, shooting ProRes in 4K60 is still...randomely successful. And it seems footages over a minute or so are veeery long and hard to managed for the Iphone.
hello, I have an iphone 15 pro max and a 4tb hard drive with a cable to the hard drive 2 times, it worked fine for me at first, now it doesn't recognize the cable, I tried it with the same iPhone, it doesn't recognize it, on a Windows laptop it's fine 😡
I have a problem with Wise 1TB SSD device, Iphone 15 pro max dont recognize it, reformatted (ExFAT), USBC 3.1 gen2 cable (original cable from Wise). Is a small device that doesn't consume much power. You know if there is something I can do to solve this problem? The device is recognized by macbook pro an PC.
@@rockanroleropr3467 Hi. I also have the 401 as well and have the same issue. The standard power for USB C is 5w, although, Apple could supply more for power delivery if they want, it seems that they don’t. Cheers, Dave.
I believe this is a problem with your external hard drive and not the iPhone 15. I bought a Samsung T7 external SSD and I have no problem connecting it to my iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is instantly (within a second or two) recognized by the iPhone. I can see it pop up in the File Manager and I can see the contents of the drive right away when browsing the drive. It is also recognized in the native camera app and show the number of minutes available to record in Apple ProRes. I have tried multiple cables of different manufacturers and lengths and all my USB-C cables work with the T7 drive and the iPhone. I recommend you buy a Samsung T5 or T7 drive and run your test again. Good luck mate. 😀👍
Hi, Ian. It's actually a problem with the iPhone, it's unable to power certain SSDs. If you check my recent videos I've done some videos about this issue and also have done videos with the T7 as well. I've also done a video showing the fastest SSD that I've come across so far for the iPhone. Thank you for your comment and your helpful suggestions 👍 Cheers, Dave.
That’s not why and the fan wasn’t even on. The same thing happens in a passive enclosure, this video explains why ua-cam.com/video/Uk-3yp9Zc3E/v-deo.html
I was going to comment about this too I found a fix. My 2TB SSD Sandisk works on my iPhone 15 pro max, it’s formatted exFAT. I originally had trouble because I was impatient and didnt wait over 20 seconds. But the phone eventually found the SSD. Same thing with my 4 TB SSD from Sandisk although I’m getting freezing issues with the larger storage. The 2TB Sandisk connects to my iPhone easily using just the USB-C port and no hub either. Try plugging your SSD into the iPhone again using a data transfer cable and wait a few minutes, the first time it tries to connect takes awhile
Hi. I seem to have narrowed down the problem. I tried 5 different enclosures and 2 NVME SSDs in the enclosures, one Gen4 and one Gen3. The iPhone wouldn't see any configuration that used the Gen4 NVME and was a bit hit or miss with the Gen3. The enclosures were USB C 10Gb/s, USB4 40Gb/s and Thunderbolt 4 which is also 40Gb/s. I imagine that the problem with certain branded "off the shelf" SSDs such as some by Sandisk, WD etc. Is that internally they may be using NVME SSDs, these will probably be ones that are rated at least 1000MB/s, and that's why the iPhone doesn't work with them. I'll do a video about it soon. Cheers, Dave.
Hi. The file format isn't the difference, it's the type of SSD used in the enclosure. Check the other comment to this one for more details. Cheers, Dave.
@@Miguel.Garcia 20 minutes is a long time but I’m glad that you were able to finally connect. In my experience, further attempts to connect the SSD will take a lot less time. Additionally, I think if you use a hub with PD you can “fire up” the SSD sooner (not positive on this). At first my 4TB sandisk didn’t connect to my iPhone until I used a powered Hub, and once the iPhone finally recognized it with the hub, I was able to connect via just the USB-C port without the hub. Strange, I know.
Test your stuff before you get into the field (always recommended). And keep a powered hub around if you really need top speed. This is not and end of the world type problem. The iPad mini has a larger capacity battery.
no one is using a battery bank and hub/dock with an iPhone for “portable” outdoor shooting. Indoors is a different story, as it’s more convenient in a locked off studio position. Plus, the power issue has nothing to do with the battery capacity.
Funny how entire YT one minute ago was happy about usb-c on iPhone being faster than Samsung. But my Samsung s10e from 2019 never messed a beat, makes great photos and it poweres even my Old Spinning External HDD. And Samsung s10e nowadays costs as much as iPhone 15 protective case;) Crazy what Tim the accountant did to people's heads to make them so desperately want Apple products even if they need to sell their kidney.
Yes, the problem is NVME SSDs. I have tested 5 enclosures and two NVME SSDs, one Gen4 and one Gen3. The Gen4 can't be seen in any enclosure and the Gen3 is seen sometimes. The enclosures were a mix of 10Gb/s USB C, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4. I'll do a video soon showing the problem in detail. Cheers, Dave.
Apple did not say the iPhone will support all kinds of drives. Imagine someone trying to connect a 100TB HDD, its not going to work. Its quite obvious these drives require different amounts of power.
Thank you for your comment 👍
Cheers,
Dave.
Cheers, Dave.
previveus phones cant even run usb shumb druve without power@@DavidHarry
It's a cell phone
Apple specifies that the external ssd must have a power draw of less 4.5W. I had the same problem with a SanDisk extreme pro and check the tests on that it can peak around 5W which then caused intermittent problems. With a Samsung T7 which peaks below 4.5W, I have had no problems at all. I'm sure this is more of an issue with the phone than the ipads given the smaller battery and less peak capacity. They're likely limiting the power out of the USB-C connector in order to prevent the chance of dropping voltage to the phone's processor and causing glitches.
Thank you so very much!!!! I bought the 15 Pro Max and was frustrated until I saw your video here....and realised its not my drive but the Apple
Hi. You are very welcome. Yes, the first thing that I thought was the problem was the drive but it is the phone that's the problem. There's now been a lot more people reporting the same issues on a few of my videos. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks for video it's help me start up my ssd with 15pro alot of cables but it's work
I have a small JEYI high speed enclosure, inside I've placed a corsair mini 2230 nvme 2.0. A youtube video suggested that set up but it had a kingston drive instead of corsair. For some reason this won't show up in my storage. I dont wanna use an using an external hub because that would defeat my whole purpose of this set up. I'm a tad frustrated tbh.
Yeah I have the same enclosure. It sucks because is small and super fast with the mac studio. I guess we have to buy something compatible.
But you can edit your footage on the iPad in the field.
it’ll be interesting to see how you get on with your drives once you’ve got your new iPhone 👍 Cheers, Dave.
My guess to why it didn’t work is because the iPhone has a smaller battery than the iPads do
I have the same problem with my Asus Arion ssd enclosure with iPhone 15 Pro Max.
I did experience the same with Sanddisk Extreme SSD.
@@NtwrkTeam You’re missing the point. The enclosure can’t even run at the speed of Gen 3 anyway.
Same issue
Might be looking at a ~5W output limit on the iPhone if thats the case.
My Seagate HDD 1TB worked on my iPhone 15 Pro Max before but I think after the update, it doesn’t work anymore.
As he said in the video the SSD/enclosure needed a lot of power from the phone. Thats why it worked aftwer charging to full i think
I would try to test with multimeter, maybe it would be enough to remove that diode to lower consumption and make that SSD work
Apple don't mention anything about current draw.
try diffent cables. I used external drive to type c cables. works fine!! I used baseus cable
please report the "problem" to apple and keep us updated. i think that "problem" could be intentional 🤨
CRAZY!
Yes, other people are saying that some of their drives are seen once but don’t work and then not seen again. Very strange. Cheers, Dave.
@Nekokotoo has identified one solution. If second plugging isn’t successful, it is needed to plug the SSD to a computer which is capable of « Ejecting » properly (only Mac as far as I saw because neither Windows nor the Iphone allow ejecting, at least in the case of an enclosed NVMe SSD like mine)
So plug the faulty SSD on Mac, click on eject, unplug, plug on the Iphone and it will appear again.
Please try iphone 15pro max with samsung T9 portable ssd? Will it work in India.? Love from India.!
My samsung t7 ssd (1tb) dosent work with iphone 15.
Samsung T7 works with iPhone 15 Pro Max, however, there's still issue with data transfer rate when recording ProRes Log at 4k60 even though T7 is USB 3.2 Gen 2 device.
Hi. Yes, to be safe you will need to use a faster drive if doing 4K/60 422 HQ. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry Unfortunately, iPhone 15 Pro's USB 3 is only Gen 2x1. For a faster drive, it needs to be Gen 2x2.
@@SiriaK Actually, the iPhone still doesn’t operate at full 1250MB/s (10Gb/s) even with the fastest drive possible. Using the drive in this video, which is about 2800MB/s, with a powered hub.
Hi @SiriaK what do you mean by the data transfer rate
External SSD’s than draw >5watts will not work on the iPhone 15 since the USB C has a current limitation to protect the port with a Thermal Fuse inside the iPhone 15
An external powered hub is the only way around this issue if you want to use the higher wattage external SSD’s out there
I don’t think it’s actually a protection mechanism, I think it’s simply a lack of current.
@@DavidHarry its a phone.... i have no problems at all with t7.

Hi. No, it only happens with external SSDs that require more power than the iPhone can deliver. Cheers, Dave.
I found out if you format exfat using MacBook, a usb-c drive will recognize on your iPhone 15 pro max.
Does that drive work on the iPad Pro 2018?
that's a shame. i know i am an idiot but do you think its because of the actual size of the iphone battery?
Now the issue is you need to have a Mac (mine was dusty but I cleaned it for that purpose) because to my knowledge, (my) PC do(es)n't allow a proper Ejecting my stuff (my config: Corsair MP600 PCIe x4 2TB NVME SSD in a Sabrent EC-NVME enclosure)
This is not the end of the fight however because once discovered again, shooting ProRes in 4K60 is still...randomely successful. And it seems footages over a minute or so are veeery long and hard to managed for the Iphone.

Because the SSD enclosure has A fan? that case 3W power
That’s not why and the fan wasn’t even on. The same thing happens in a passive enclosure, this video explains why ua-cam.com/video/Uk-3yp9Zc3E/v-deo.html
did you try it with the magsafe Powerbank?
MagSafe does not increase the power to the USB C port.
I have a 1TB Sanddisk SSD that the iPhone 15 Pro Max does not recognize.
@@Loudlightning You were right, I left my SSD Plugged in for 20 min and it finally recognized it in the files app and in the camera app.
Is not an iPhone issue, the drive consumes more power than it should
Test your stuff before you get into the field (always recommended).
And Samsung s10e nowadays costs as much as iPhone 15 protective case;) Crazy what Tim the accountant did to people's heads to make them so desperately want Apple products even if they need to sell their kidney.
nvme drive not compatyble
Yes, the problem is NVME SSDs. I have tested 5 enclosures and two NVME SSDs, one Gen4 and one Gen3. The Gen4 can't be seen in any enclosure and the Gen3 is seen sometimes. The enclosures were a mix of 10Gb/s USB C, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4. I'll do a video soon showing the problem in detail. Cheers, Dave.
Buy samsung t7. end of problem.
Apple did not say the iPhone will support all kinds of drives. Imagine someone trying to connect a 100TB HDD, its not going to work. Its quite obvious these drives require different amounts of power.
Now imagine saying that BS to someone on Mac or Windows 😆
