    hello!
first of all, congrats on winning USX! it's a hard event... this is my first year doing extemp, and i was wondering how you use your prep time and manage to remember all the sources? though i have gotten better at remembering sources (went from 2 to 4 sources, sometimes even 6), it still sometimes doesn't fill the time or it doesn't flow right. i try to use humor, which sometimes works, but it feels forced. i guess what i'm really asking here for is some tips 😅

I’m a first year extemp speaker who is still learning the ropes. May I ask how you go from using the one allowed notecard to doing entirely memorized?

I recommend the book "Moonwalking with Einstein" by Joshua Foer. He is a journalist who became a competitive memorization enthusiast and wrote a book about it. He covers basic memory techniques and grounds them in their historical uses for speech writers and orators. He also recommends a few other books (many of which are public domain and free) as a good jumping off point if you really want to excel at memorizing notes. However, no amount of memory technique will prevent the biggest factor from being practice. If you continue to compete, you will form a uniquely effective speaking style. Once you have your own style and are comfortable with it, you will only have to remember your key facts and the general outline of your speech while talking about it naturally to the crowd. Best of luck in your debating career!

stop using the notecard. trust me, you dont need it. you may fumble a couple rounds but force yourself not to use the notecard and youll get used to it after like on tournament
