There's also the comic strip (drawn by Tove and her brother Lars), my favourite being "Moomin and aunt Jane" where they send Aunt Jane a chest full of swear words because they don't like her.

Snuffkin was always someone who fascinated me, watching the show. I only had one VHS of the show, and that was the episode/movie where a jungle was planted around the house. I would watch this casette religiously as I was growing up, often rewatching and skipping around to scenes that had Snuffkin involved, speaking or teaching the trolls. He was never frightened, but approached every situation with a kind of assured caution, that told of his life experience and the wisdom he had gained from this life. I like to think that he influences me even now.

I grew up with moomins as any other finnish person. The special thing is, as I grew older, the stories and the tv show didn't start to feel childish. They just got deeper and meaningful, like a poem that you only understand when you start to analyse it and reflect your own experiences to it. Moomins have a way of describing certain feelings like for example silent happiness or the beauty of melancholy unlike anything else I've seen. There are many people who have a tattoo from moomins too. Definetly something that speaks to you both as an adult and as a child.
Great job with the video, you have a soothing voice and I learned some new things too.

Back before i started school my siblings and i used to watch vcr cassettes of the moomin episodes.
The cassetes degraded after more use and the episodes became stuttering and always with a constant humming sound in the background.
We had a "day mom" we stayed with during work hours, this old ladies apartment furniture looked just like something from the moomin universe. Vintage phone with gold handle and a marble base, vintage vacuum cleaner and a bunch of old toys none of us had ever seen back then, a small parakeet was also there.
The whole apartment was a window back in time, very surreal.
And it made the memories of the moomin episodes even more vivid.

hearing you talk about the nostalgic values of moomins, even if for you it was such a small thing to happen, makes me so damn happy. it's rare at all that i'll find someone that has such a connecting mentality to the moomins. i first watched the fuzzy felt moomins when i was about 7 years old [about 12 years ago]. i only had one dvd of it, and it was the 5th volume so it was in the middle of the series, and even from that, it's probably a franchise that i'm the most thankful for and one that i'll never forget. as of the past five years i've researched way more about it, watched more of the shows, read the books, draw plenty of art of it, even the character of snufkin inspired me to learn to play more instruments, and the origins of the series itself made me wanna study finnish. there's something so unique and comforting about the series, it always makes me feel complete. and watching this, i just feel glad someone can think or feel a similar way.

Being a Finn, moomins or as you call them in Finland ''Muumit'' are a huge part of everybodys childhood, even my mother who is over 50 years old is still obsessed with moomins and I think while every Finn thinks of their perfect summer day, and when they describe happiness they bring up moomins. I feel honored as a Finn to be somewhat a part of this story and culture, and feel so proud so many people around the world enjoy something that means so much to any Finnish person on earth. As someone who's watched the 90's show and read the books in their original language my entire life, this video was neat and well made, despite coming into the subject matter from a very different angle. Minor nitpick: Tove is pronounced Too-veh.
Apart from the difference between the often philosophical books and the family-friendly show is how different they both are to the utterly mad comics. References to crime, alcohol and politics abound, and the characters will frequently display completely anarchic or violent behaviour. The shot from the 69' show doesn't seem as bizarre when compared to the comics.

Nicely done, thank you for sharing. I discovered the Moomins as a child in England in the early 1970s. Was immediately enamored of them and the books. My parents bought me a stuffed snork maiden (bright pink with blonde bangs), which I still have. Read most of the books then. Rediscovered them with my daughter a few years ago, as I read them to her. What impressed me was the loyalty and generosity of the family members - the Moomin family and the variety of creatures they welcomed as their own. The books show us respect for different types, caring for others, helping others, the meaning and value of friendship, the importance of family. There is much warmth in these stories, much rejoicing, but also melancholy, sadness, loneliness. We love the Moomins and their friends because they are just like us - each character has flaws, and each has traits we admire. Like the books, your video made me smile with a tear or two in my eye.

Some of them was too much "optimized" to fit in soviet lifestyle, and too silly and goofy. But the full length one, with stop-motion puppets, based on Comet book, was actually made really well. Like it was so atmospheric(even kinda depressing), good animation, and music, story just follows the original…

Even though the Moomins are obscure in the states, Walt Disney was once going to try to buy the rights to them. I can imagine they would have been as popular in the states if that had happened. I still think that the Moomins are to the Finnish and Scandinavia is what Pooh is to America. Even though if you get into the gist of things, before Disney brought over the story it was relatively unknown. But just imagine Disney's The Moomins, even though probably Snufkin would dislike the consumerism side of the company.

This was a lovely video. Just out of curiosity, why did you not discuss Jansson's sexuality? Being gay at a time when homosexuality was not only illegal in Finland but also classified as a mental illness, Jansson bravely wrote her sexuality into her work. in Finn Family Moomintroll the couple of Thingamy and Bob are personifications of herself and an early lover, Vivica Bandler. Two near identical creatures, utterly inseparable from each other. Meanwhile the Groke is a figure of loneliness, in contrast to the companionship of Thingamy and Bob. In fact in Moominland Midwinter, it's Too-ticky (another character based on Jansson's partner, Tuulikki Pietila) who points out that that the Groke is pitiable - that a life untouched by love is a sad, empty thing.

I actually don’t know, I was aware of it and that I should have inserted something about it in the video and for some reason I didn’t, I guess I didn’t know how I could shoehorn it in, there was quite a lot I left out but I do agree that her sexuality was something very important and I should have addressed it

For a year now I've been really unmotivated to draw. I've just lost that passion and barely ever draw anymore. I was unproductive, I waste my time in UA-cam watching random things, that even that gets extremely boring at times.
I was pretty down in the dumps, trying to find something to entertain myself. But deep down I was probably trying to desperately find that one thing dear to me, which was my love and passion for art. I was so very close to completely giving up on drawing but this show saved me at the very last moment.
Like any normal day I happen to stumble upon Moomins. At first I didn't pay any mind. But recommendations kept pilling in, so I checked one video out. At first it didn't strike me as much. But UA-cam kept on suggesting more content of Moomins. I watched them, and slowly I grew way more fond of it.
Everything about the characters, the story, it drew me in. I gathered every information I could for this show, I started reading the books, I started watching the animated series. And that's when I finally found it once more, my deep love for art. I forgot how fun it was to draw.
For once I wasn't forcing myself to draw something, I was actually enjoying each stroke I make with my pen. So really I have to thank this wonderful show for cheering me up and giving me the motivation I desperately needed, Moomins may not be my childhood but it surely gave me hope. Thank you Tove Jansson for creating this wonderful story.

lovely story. i used to read them to my classes in Australia. Because the text is longer and less shaped than contemporary fiction I used to supply photocopies of the illustations to kids so those whose concentration span wasn't up to a whole chapter of listening could sketch with 6B Pencils. it was a good measure for me. when tnose pencils stopped I knew I was on a winning bit!

I remember so many days when I was sick and just binge watched moomins from VHS under a blanket with cup of tea. Still in my adult days I watch moomins sometimes. So much nostalgy. It's very popular thing here in Finland to collect moomin mugs and its very usual to get them/give them as a gift. PS. I've learned few Snufkin songs with harmonica. Good to play on the campfire on the shore of a lake in the wilderness. I guess im kinda snufkin myself too.

I think it was a Bosnian try to make a cultural leap and have own dubs etc that's how we have around 60 + Japanese moon in adaptation that a whole generation knows and not only that it was in the country's language so that's amazing 、nostagically speaking of course.
