I’m a retired lightkeeper from Canada; something I frequently noticed was the number of sailboats traveling up and down the west coast, even in fair winds, without a stitch of sail up...I mean, why have a sailboat at all?

Eventually they run out of steam and find it more and more difficult to create content that keeps people engaged enough to keep coming back week after week. Some are better story tellers than others and make a success of it and maybe even a living of sorts. When you have to keep churning out contents it very quickly becomes apparent that it's not all a bed of roses and you find yourself working harder at this job than what you did at your previous job before you went sailing.

The sailing life is an amazing adventure that suddenly you may need to simply decide leave it. It brings amazing highs and some pretty deep lows. For sure it’s not easy. Trying to do good videos while sailing and living that life must be incredibly consuming. The dedication of folks who reclaimed Alma is amazing and sadly their story has taken such serious turn. If you know any of these ‘missing sailors’ or not this video is a bit melancholy. Who knows, they all may be happier than ever while not showing us their lifes. Best wishes to them all for what they offered us and what their future holds.

I can relate - when I get into something, I go all in and then when I no longer have the passion to continue, I move on. The worst thing you can do is to hang on long after the passion that brought you there is gone and you are living in memories of the past. Perhaps the worst thing is never having the guts to move on and explore new things. I wish everyone who pursued their dreams and moved on the very best!

Of these I followed Finding Avalon practically from the first video. I really enjoyed their journey and do miss seeing videos from them. From the outset they made it clear they were on a one way trip home. The last few videos they uploaded were their arrival back in Australia, the process of selling SV Finding Avalon, and saying goodby. I had hoped they might just decide to complete a circumnavigation once they checked in home but they were good to their word. Wherever they are, and whatever they are up to now, I wish them well.
p.s. Btw Xanthe and Jackson, if you see this you are both still Rock Stars in my book. :)

The two biggest ones out there are NOT the same they lost their fun and adventure side SV La Vagabonde with a child and one on the way, while SV Delos lost its main mate and now just a 'family-oriented sailing' like the previous one mention. I miss SV Happy Together they just decided not to film anymore once they upgraded to a 50 Cat.*

    • @oceandrew
      @oceandrew 3 роки тому +2

Your point about family sailing is well taken. Add RAN to your list of newborns aboard and Sailing Soulianis too. Once there's a child on board the vibe changes. Also SLV picked up one hell of a mortgage with that new cat everyone thinks they got for free (talk about a myth) and the pressure to produce content has them pushing against everything even shutdowns, quarantines and social distancing.

    • @yanndesdevises7670
      @yanndesdevises7670 3 роки тому +2

The tipping point is when the child starts crawling or walking. There is just no way you would be filming instead of making sure your child is safe. That reduces the amount of material they can edit.

@@oceandrew Interesting. SLV are selling their Outremer 45 and building a new cat using greener technology.
They never seem to have much problem producing one video per week - even when their son was born and they had a stock of videos they used while getting used to being new parents. I vaguely recall part of the deal for their current boat was a video every fortnight?
There definitely is a difference in the videos: the older videos from the monohull days had a raw quality that I liked. The newer videos are more slick content and production wise, but still enjoyable.

I can’t remember the name of the channel to save my life. But it was an older aussie fellow, with his first mate, an attorney who fell for this dude and the life. They had an old 30’ single hull, that dude was constantly working on. They were not the slickest channel out there, but they were earnest, hard working and dude was highly skilled in survival, fishing, boat work, etc. He had the 2nd funniest line I’ve heard here on the sailing channels: “Now when breaking water in the western outback, it is essential to have a good woman. Remember, this is crock country and they’re a very real threat to those who do not respect them… this is their home and we’re just visitors, so it’s all about Safety First! With that in mind, send your Sheila in a full ten minutes before venturing out into crocodile infested waters.”

Thanks for making this great video testimonial to past UA-camrs. One of the comments made a point about how some channels are verging on "soft porn" focussing on young women in skimpy swimwear. While content creators have a right to disable, delete or destroy their own creative works, consider for example if Shakespeare (English writer), Mozart (Musician) or Rembrandt (painter), if they'd destroyed every available copy of their works before their deaths, our society now would be the poorer. Some UA-camrs make a LOT of money from their channels, (whether sailing, RVing, or small farm/housebuilding). In many cases over USD $5,000 (and some cases over $30,000) EXTRA, per month over and above the costs of living. Those "content creators" who are making a really good living from UA-cam and with enough left over to build themselves a large financial nest-egg for later in life. If those folks delete/disable videos then their audience, especially those who've supported them through Patreon or buying merchandise are likely to feel very disappointed and hard done-by. UA-cam videos enable us, the three-quarters of the world's population who have internet but cannot afford to go everywhere and see everything, to get a glimpse of other people and other places. Plus factual information can be learned, such as outboard motor and diesel engine maintenance, solar panel and battery electric systems. I do not like Shakespeare's writings, Mozart's music or Rembrandt's paintings, but I am glad they still exist for others to study and enjoy. Yes "life happens". marriages and relationships break up. People get sick and have to go another direction in life. Babies come along. But it would be nice, and a show of respect for their loyal viewers who have helped fund their sailing or RV lifestyle, or helped pay for their house and farm build, if when creators find they MUST stop uploading new content, they at least leave a "goodbye and thanks" message as their final video, and that they leave the channel and videos available for viewing, so later folks can come along and learn from them.

I noticed the point type sailing videos as Sailing doodles is an ogy boat. So many sail in the Caribbean which I refuse to go as just a big party place for pit smoking drugged. Very expensive and theft is a major problem. Purchased a sailboat on the east coast and transported to the north. Sail to Alaska then Mexico. Now live in LA Paz.

The video left me feeling a bit melancholy. Most people I know who have either gone offshore cruising or lived aboard have packed it in for various reasons. Most who dream of cruising offshore never even buy a boat, let alone leave the dock.
For me, cruising the west coast of BC/Alaska and returning home or visiting a town or village with first world facilities/services will be more than enough of a challenge. BC and Alaska have some of the best cruising in the world with pristine wilderness, marine parks, villages, cities, fishing etc.

Abandon Comfort - no idea what happened to them but the furious comments left on their last video from fans angry at being left hanging were hilarious.
Sailing Creo - Med sailors notable mainly for the exceptionally grumpy skipper, ended up setting up a yacht brokerage business in Greece - good luck to them.
Sailing Kittiwake - really liked these guys and they’ve only just hung up their oilies, but they had the good manners to explain why and what they were up to : sounds like their time in the Caribbean had been pretty grim.
And one I wish would clear off: La Vagabonde - smug doesn’t even come close to describing them, but I guess that’s what UA-cam success does to you.

We really enjoyed WICKED SALTY, awesome channel with great content, I always thought it would be cool to start a sailing channel, me and my girlfriend lived on a Privilege 615 Catamaran for 8 years and were based in Key West. We sailed around the Florida Keys and several trips to the Bahamas and documented most of these trips and probably have enough footage for at least 5 seasons of sailing, but it's a lot of work to produce a UA-cam video and I just don't have the patience for it. I know a lot of these sailing channels depend on the ad sense revenue to help support their adventures, but me & my girlfriend have very healthy pensions and live a very comfortable lifestyle without any outside source of revenue. We recently sold the Privilege 615 and bought a small condo in Key Largo, Florida. We didn't quit sailing we just downsized, our new boat is a 2020 Corsair 880 Sport Trimaran, this thing is wicked fast and a blast to sail, it's 29 feet long, nice roomy cabin, big enough for a weekend cruise and possibly a trip to the Bahamas......

Not a popular Opinion but I’ll add my two cents. I think many a folks got the same idea, bought drones and cameras in hopes that their channels could supplement their lifestyles with enough views with little to no film or story telling talent. Over saturation of people with the same idea causes low viewership and makes constantly coming up with new content more trouble than its worth. I mean ten years ago I said to myself, “I’m going to sail around the world and video it all”. Now if I ever sail around the world I’m not going to bother documenting it because too many have ruined that aspect for me. I find a lot of channels are un-original and they try to hard to be a mixture of earlier channels with film technics And music dub overs that are very Casey Nistat inspired. Also there is to many older people trying to be “cool” by copying others film style which is very annoying so I don’t even bother watching their channels. Wicket salty and SLV used to be great but there was a spark of originality to their channels unlike some of these boomers with million dollar yachts and absolutely no talent for creating original content. I think what kills most of these channels is we sailers who can’t afford to go cruising want to see MORE SAILING and less destination drone footage. 99% of all cruising footage is of destination footage, talking and more talking with little to no sailing footage. Ive watched all the sailing families recent excursions and not once do you see them put a reef in, raise the sails, tact or dock in a precarious environment. I’d personally like to see more of that then drone footage of a beautiful destination. In my opinion i think a Channel that will focus more on the actually sailing aspect of it all may have some more success than all these boring non original older vloggers trying to be SVL mixed with Nistat music.

One of my favorite SLV moment ever was when they were crossing the Atlantic with Greta and a professional sailor onboard. At some point there was an urgent situation. Eleyna came out in the cockpit with her camera and the crew’s reaction was priceless “drop the f***** camera and help us out, here” which to her credit, Eleyna did include in the final edit.

Oh my God if I hear anybody using any of the music on any channel that sounds like this stuff that Casey neistat used to use that's it I don't go back and watch them .
I binged on a bunch of his episodes several years ago just to see what was so great about his channel .
That music really got on my nerves .
Wrong music is the main reason I will stop watching a channel .

@@gardensofthegods dude, they are ALL using the blueprint of Niestat and simple jazz beats which build Into a drop with a cool beat over mostly drone footage and some “ok” b foll.

They sailed back from NZ into Gold Coast Aus approx Apr 2020 during beginning of the COVID saga. Were heading to north QLD to take care of her sick mother.
Hope all is well for them.

Twice I saw videos from sailing channels where the video that was the last things did not look so good. I forget the names but : 1. Some boat sailing I think a bit towards Antarctica from the Tierra Del Fuego region. Not sure how far south they intended to go, but they had their cold weather gear on and were dealing with some near freezing rain. I think it was a boat at least 35 ft and had maybe a crew of four.
    2. Some lone young guy in his 28 ft boat starting out in the Caribbean. The intro video was well done, showed him interacting with locals on the islands and him offering some thoughts about life. His last video was very short, just showed him entering a squall as he approached the Bermuda triangle. Does anyone know if these two expeditions simply stopped filming or if they came to grief ? Thanks.

Nice job. There was a couple who sailed out of Seward, Alaska. They just disappeared suddenly. Boats, Beaches and Bears if I recall. I think all their videos were taken down too. May have had something to do with them hunting a bear.

I never heard of them. Would love to watch a sailing channel out of Alaska. It’s too bad they removed their content. Thanks for the comment

They were great. The name of their channel escapes me. Everything was taken down suddenly several years ago. Sailing, fishing, hunting, beer and whiskey were all points covered by the videos.

Bixler McClure & Krystin Bablinskas , I think they got married. Alaskagraphy was the channel name. Would love to see them come back.

I remember they had some problems with overactive animal lovers who harassed them for fishing and hunting. So they decided to put all down. Last I heard is they married and opened a business in the tourist sector in Seward.
