One reason that France is a better ally than England is that England tends to call you in in a war against France, but then keeps its armies in Britain, allowing France to overrun your country (as well as their own continental possessions), causing a period a poverty and devastation.

9:16 it's better to ask for War Reps rather than maxing the money. With recent patch changes the money is divided according to your war participation. I actually hate to directly conquer outside of the lowlands in a Netherlands game. Usually I fight France to release Normandy before I take them as a vassal and make them transfer their trade to me, and then either ally and defend the Scottish to prevent England from forming GB, then start to -ab-use the condottieri system to keep the 2 in balance once Scotland starts to grow powerful. Often, I'll pop in late game to take London off England and make it into a Client State to transfer trade to me, and call it the "Free City of London".
Basically, I like to roleplay somewhat and make pretty borders while ALSO thinking about what might be optimal.

I actually think putting one merchant collecting on your main trade node is probably the best thing you can do, specially early on
it does very little for trade power(only 2+ modifiers) but it's a flat 10% increase of whatever money you're getting from that
100 trade income? now its 110. Its rare early on that any merchant can give you so much money on it's own

  • @josephcola9662

Personally, I try to go for 3 (or even 4) provinces in the independence war, and I also try to give part of southern burgundy to France to keep them happy.
Antwerp is the most important because of the development, how close it is to you, the center of trade, and the fact that you can get faceting there if you rush Renaissance for lots of cash in the long run. Breda is also a great grab, but I prefer to grab land in the state of Flanders, because that state has a bonus to passive Renaissance generation, and since it doesn't start in the HRE, it doesn't cost as much AE. If you're on top of your diplo game with improving relations, and have France as an ally, you can take Antwerp and annex Flanders and not have a coalition declare on you. Then, while waiting for AE to tick down, rival all your small neighbors in the Rhineland and the Netherlands. Declare humiliation wars, taking the humiliation and cash in 1 of them for the age objective, and show strength in the other two to farm 600 mana points. Between truces and the fact that humiliation wars lock you out of taking land, you're going to be active and getting benefits from the war (and insane power projection, which means +1 mana in every category once it's above 50), but AE and a potential coalition is also ticking down. And if you eclipse any of those small rivals while you wait for AE to tick down, you can farm even more mana by show strength wars. Ideally, your second war where you take land is either against England and just taking Calais for yourself (you have a mission later on as the Netherlands where you can force them into a PU if you stay a monarchy or the Orangists are in control if you went with the Dutch Republic) and giving any other of their holdings in Europe to France, or a second war on Burgundy (or Brabant if they still exist) once the truce runs out. From there, take your time consolidating the Netherlands, and don't actually form it until you have all the HRE provinces in the lowlands under your control, because it makes you leave the Empire.
From there, bide your time to bump diplo tech and take exploration and then expansion. Nab centers of trade on the African coast, grab the small islands with few/no natives that Spain and Portugal like to take, lock down the Cape, and then hop over to the Spice Islands and Malaysia. Of course, you can also go into India or even China at that point, and the Dutch mission tree does give you an inroad into Sri Lanka for a start in the region.
As for religion, it's up to you, but if you want to RP, go Reformed.

    @GreenIsTheWayForward 2 роки тому +3

Great guide! But I see that you really undervalue prestige. Prestige does many things, but especially important for this situation is that at 100 prestige you get -10% aggressive expansion (less AE when you take land) and +50% to improve relations (making AE decay MUCH faster), which scales down to no bonus at 0 prestige. Combine these bonuses from prestige with a +20% improve relations advisor and you will be able to conquer WAY faster without getting into coalition problems. You can get prestige from peace deals instead of cash. Bonus with getting prestige fast is that you will very probably get the 'faceting' event for Antwerp which will change production there to gems and give a bonus to its production and trade value.

Hey... started a Holland run recently but put it on pause so this will help.
As for running away into the HRE, since I had England, France and Aragon, I used my fleet to transport the troops to Caux (built more infantry in Amsterdam to force limit) and was able to get a high war score. This clearly works and doesn't drain diplomatic points, but is only viable if you have England and control the seas I realize.
Victory was easy with 100% with about 15 countries threatening a coalition as I took Brugge, Gent and Antwerpen.
Of course I lost France right away and England within six months but was able to get a few HRE members which, along with Aragon, kept the wolves at bay.
I have now allied Austria as Aragon fell under the Iberian wedding and am trying to figure out what to do which is where this new guide could be handy. Thanks.
I enjoy your stuff and I really appreciate that you make the guides quite methodical, explain your reasoning (most of the time) and avoid the freakishly lucky 1% events to make your content more applicable.
As well, really enjoy your collaboration with the Socialstreamers and Zlewikk.
    ciao

    Update for 1.34 "Sweden":
**With the changes to Northern Lords; First and full most, make sure to seize land immediately before giving nobles expanded levy, because they become except from land seize after. **
Now You do not need to worry about having to seek independence from Burgundy, you can simply put all your early efforts into trade and saving up ducats to buy buildings as they become available as you tech up; You'll want your overlord to stay alive as long as possible because the 3 heirs that follow are all garbage bar the final one which triggers the succession crisis (she's decent). But most the time he usually only lives for 4 years, which is good enough for you to tech up on time or slightly ahead of everyone else (except ottomans) netting you nice innovative points. Also Burgundy *will* invest in building churches on your lands too, so you'll be able to build 2 churches right away, one you build yourself and another they build, if you're willing to take loans right away (and Holland can get away with borrowing a lot of money early on) then you can build all your buildings as you unlock them in every province, yes you lose money in the short time, but it facilitates growth in the long term. Why do I say don't worry about seeking independence?
Because unlike before 1.34 where the succession was hit or miss, now it always happens and is forced, so you can just sit back and wait for the emperor to force Burgundy to give you independence, which they usually always accept. The only problem is sometimes France will immediately declare a PU war on Burgundy dragging you into it, but it also will drag in... everyone else too while rarely would France's allies join in. So feel free to sit back and wait it out because France will rarely beeline it for your provinces... usually. If you want you can also just restart till you get a favourable outcome. All of this usually goes down 20 years after game start, roughly around the time you'll get Renaissance. I recommend against spending power points on rushing Renaissance or development, as it is cheaper to tech up this early. Instead you should use it to get Colonialism after you have got prosperity as well as all the development buffs you can acquire via pope as well as Holland ideas (roughly around 1490 to 1451) so dev cost is only 11 to 50 points max.
Keep in mind the AI now seems to love castle rushing and will build a lot of forts around you on land you need to form Netherlands, this is a blessing and a curse, it is a blessing because when you take it you get more defence and army tradition (bonus!) you didn't have to invest ducats into. The downside is that it also means it takes longer to take those provinces. The only upside to all this is they can't afford those castles despite building them because the new AI was designed by game designers who lack any lateral thinking when it comes to knowing the AI has the same economy as the player, which means they will bleed into dept when you fight them while you will be swimming in ducats regardless because you're a trading powerhouse. The only thing you need to be concerned about is making sure you don't get blockaded; Holland relies on it's trade to make money since if you're smart, you'll be leasing out all production to private companies for lump sum payouts while also not having to worry about taking up early building slots with workshops. You make money from trade, not from a centralised economy.

Another thing to keep in mind when forming the Netherlands is that you get a mission tree that lets you PU England but it requires you to have 60% crown land and be a monarchy. So I like to never sell titles as Holland early game and keep seizing land as I expand throughout the lowlands, then once I hit 60% crown lands and think I can beat England (and the Emperor if I don't have all of the lowlands e.g. because of the Burgundian succession) I take the decision to form the Netherlands and immediately declare a PU war on England. If you don't declare the war before you get the event to change to the dutch government then you only get claims on some of England and you miss out on getting a coloniser subject.

You can get that PU if the Orangists are in power, and you keep it from that point onward like the normal PU rules (so at least keep Orangists in power with a relatively young ruler until they have a positive opinion and are loyal).

  • @Karim896

The basic rules to trade that I've figured out is:
1.) If you are weak or tiny compared to your neighbors in your main trade node, especially if you're a OPM, prioritize sending a Merchant to collect in your main trade node. It's not efficient, but the main trade node is the most important, and all of your money is made there, so any buff to your trade power there is valuable. Do note that past about 40% trade power, it's almost certainly going to make you more money to transfer.
1a.) If you are that weak and have a coast line, you should also be privateering to the best of your ability in that main node, because, while privateering is inefficient, it's also a good source of money when you don't have much trade power.
2.) Transfer in chains, going out from your main node. Early on, just transfer in the most valuable nearby nodes. Later, find an extremely valuable node that you can almost completely control and try to transfer it as directly as possible into your main node.
3.) Do not be afraid to just totally redo your trade occasionally. You get all the benefits immediately on the month ticks, and, if you fuck it up, it's unlikely that a single month of lost revenue bankrupts you.

    Couple of suggestions.
    1. Get a royal marriage with Austria on December 11, then improve relations with Austria during war. As long as you don't take any HRE provinces in independence war, Austria will def. ally you after war is over. That way you won't have to worry about the -25 hit for not returning HRE land.
    2. Just move your army into Brabant before you start war. Your army will be black flagged and you won't have to worry about them getting destroyed or even manpower issues. Your allies are going to do all the work for you, you are more than likely not going to matter in the independence war.
    3. Only take Flanders lands if you can. If you can't (like England occupying Flanders), no worries! Just take independence and give provinces to France to build a bunch of favors. You're gonna get rid of any alliances with England once war is over anyway, so don't bother helping them.
You will be in an awesome position if you follow these steps. Super easy situation to expand with big brother France indebted to you.

I went to war with France and England twice and won both, and this way I won't have the big blue blob next door, conflicting with me over Flanders, and Austria and Castille don't really have goals in the English Channel, so now I am doing 20 year cicles on beating up England and France with my two allies, England even has Normandy and Gascony, that's how weak France is. I've played Holland a couple of times and i usually end up taking provinces from Flanders since the Flanders region spawns renaissance. This enables me to make more money from selling it to my bigger neighbors. What is the specific reason you recommend getting Antwerpen over Brugge? Is the reasoning that you would always dev Amsterdam to 30 dev and therefore get the institution early regardless?

    1. Since you are taking LOADS of burgher loans ... how are you replenishing Mercantilism, which is a nice thing to have?
    2. I'd think that "invading Britain" to get a center of trade or two from them for the English Channel AND because they are "a bit closer to the colonies" with some of their provinces. Having a beach head will make further conquests EASY, because the english AI is quite dumb when it comes to fighting, due to them being spread over many territories that are separated by water. This invasion COULD start in Ireland as well ...

    • @irfanhekimoglu2294

I have to disagree with your Quality Idea as first selection. The 'buffs' to FL and MP are best applied after you have been able to, and built, the relevant buildings, and utilized Mana to develop your provinces (for MP specifically) as they are % buffs not a flat number. I'd rely on your 'humanity' to compensate for taking Innovative first, or perhaps, if you insist, a different Military idea, or one that leans into military, like Admin for Merc bonuses (relevant as they have their own MP pool). Just a suggestion if you want to max out the Quality Idea.

No one would pick something that negatively impacts them in such a significant manner. All Ideas are bonuses that any nation can pick, making them also provide a downside makes taking them feel more like a punishment. Also once you pick an idea group you get events related to that group, some of which are positive, some are negative which meant to help represent what you are talking about.

But wait how do you go colonizing West Africa and than India as he said? In the early 1500 you do not have that far colonial range to colonize there yet and based on what he showed us, he will only have holdings in the English Channel not in Ireland or Portugal or something like that, so how do you do it? Do you even colonize or just declare war on one of those african factions?
    Please help.
