It's always the saintly grandparents taking the OPs side, it's a tediously predictable point.

I'm sure that story 1 had an update. I think the car they ended up buying him was a lemon and the parents knew it was. I think they got a 2nd round from the relatives for it. Can't really remember the rest.

Yeah the car was so bad it ended up being a right off if I can remember his uncle and grandad stepped up and helped him to get another car sorted

Search 'brother gets car on 18th birthday r*ddit'. Look for a logo that looks like a famous coffee brand.

I got a job when i was 15 saved up money and bought myself a cheap pickup truck. His parent's favored his brother, but instead of volunteering he could have gotten a job that paid 💰 and bought a car.

Story 2: as for the top comment, didn't OP mention that he was the one who invited his mom to live with him? She was the one doing household chores, so she wasn't completely relying on him. IMO, they should help the sister out, but she really should've listened to her mom. She should have at least secured herself with a degree. It's hard to be a successful actress without any connections or without doing any "favors" for the people up there even though you got the looks and the talent.

Anyone who criticizes the mother of the second story doesn't know what it's like to be a parent. We have to take responsibility for our children, my job is to ensure that my daughter is able to live for herself. No matter what plans you have, a decent school education is insurance and always something you can fall back on.
If necessary, life as a soldier is still possible
I mean who is so stupid and relies 100% on acting😂😂😂

Second story: seriously how is the mother narcissist?? And there are many countries that don't have social security or disability from the govt..not every story is from America and not every country has a security network for their citizens more over op was willing to assist his sister with financial help to get a place to live ..she was the one to reject it and op's mom wasn't taking advantage of him ..she is helping with house hold chores and if at a later age she needs assistance he would be responsible for her care by law in many countries... please open your mind to other countries and people might also have problems

That seems a bit much the no cake no celebration because she didn't listen to you. She probably sees it as you being mean because she didn't do as you said not because she went against your agreement.
I'd seperate the issue from her bday. After it let her know that your disappointed and why that was risky.
Maybe the punishment should be you wouldn't pay it back. If her friends didn't pay her back she was out that amount. Make that clear and celebrate like planned.

So, during the previous 17 birthdays, OP never noticed that gifts were given based on merit, as opposed to… “It’s your birthday!”? OP knew enough to throw in some last minute extra-curricular work, too. Santa may or may not check his list twice, but mom & dad absolutely keep track. And it’s on a sliding scale, right? Little Timmy did the volunteering work, so that gets him the cake baked from scratch, but he had the flu a couple months ago, so the research paper on Nubian pyramids only got a B-… guess we ixnay on the DJ, and find the boom box and actual CDs from the time of the Nubian Kings. And only winners get cars, not football quarter finals losers. If you can’t even make the semi-finals, you deserve to walk.

Wtf, the 2nd and third story top comment feels like written by 18yo. 18th bday doesn't mean you entitled to have everything you want.

They legit never took a day off to be there for a birthday EVER. Which means you know they weren't there for anything ELSE either. Your kids will never remember the reason, simply that you were never there. That is all that matters. Oh you work long hours and provide for everything for them...and? You, weren't, there. That is all that matters to the kid. All that they will remember.
      Be a better parent.

The second one i would help the sister in a heartbeat, the sister have to live her life and sure there is consequences but being excluded from the family for a personal choice is CRAZY, you usually find this punishment for people who cheat or betray the family, all she did is choose a hard path because she love doing it

Story 1: Phew! I thought it was gonna be another, brother gets a car and on my 18th birthday, they tell OP to get of their house, story. Still shitty, behavior though. OP should move out and get their own place ASAP, though.
Story 2: Mom has back pain and that sucks, but she should sign up for disability then. Also, she's little bitch for wanting OP to let their sister be homeless. Personally, I've would've stayed and completed my degree, so I had something to fall back, on it's her life. Parents are their to give advice, protection, and most of all, catch them if they fall down. That being said, they don't know how OP sister really is because they haven't seen her in years and also she sounded unstable because she wasn't willing to take money, even though they claimed to really need help. OP should tread carefully, and not allow their mother to order them around.
Story 3: Sounds like a Karen being bored and needing something to complain about. How about actually fixing the stupid traffic jam problem, instead of yelling at someone for finding a way around it.

Story 2, mama was right about the boyfriend and the career. Her execution was wrong, but I think it came from a place of concern. My sister did the same thing, and you know what? Mama was right every single time. Sister blamed mom for all her failures and problems. I think OP was generous in offering his sister financial assistance in her own place until she gets back on her feet. Why was that not enough? I think she was planning on mooching off OP indefinately until she became a famous actress. NTA. Sister needs to grow up.

Indeed, not necessarily out of desire - but giving people a safety net to fall back on makes advancement in life less of an urgency.
My dad let me come back home after my 2nd turn in university at 34, and now I'm nearing 39 with my dad close to retirement within the year.
I did briefly have a temp job during COVID but felt no urgency to gain a permanent job elsewhere before that finished because of my dads support.
Looking back I would kinda wish my dad had told me to keep a job or get out to spur me forward.
