    Hello ASL Heroes!!!
    Hey, I could really use your help.
    If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you.
    A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com.
    Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!”

    Thanks!
    - Dr. Bill

    Take care and love to you all.

      Many people love your work, and maybe you could set up a crowd fund sponsoring to pay for your teachings and servers. I'm actually surprised that this isn't paid for by the state. I actually also had another question, I (and i really apologize for using the word heard) heard from you from the deaf community on VRCHAT, but I never saw you on there so I was wondering if you never heard of it? It's loads of fun. I'll give you a tour if you want, i'm currently learning sign language there, all you need is a steam account and download the vrchat game, and you can join the virtual deaf community (both of which are free). Bunch of nice people there. Here's a video of RAy _is_Deaf, who talks about being bullied for being a deaf person and a glimpse of the Virtual deaf community. ua-cam.com/video/jk8qz889Mok/v-deo.html

      Natalie,
      Hello :)
      I absolutely believe that the future of ASL instruction will include VR worlds wherein ASL learners can dive into and spend hours and hours interacting in ASL with electronic beings (so called "AI") as well as avatars.
      At some point in the future I too will need to dive into VR. Thanks for commenting!

      @@sign-language If you ever want to dive into it,you can either drop me a message and i'll give you guidance if you desire so, or you can venture on your own if you're tech savvy enough to enter the world of virtual reality on your own, you don't have to worry, you don't actually need a Virtual reality set, if you want to do VRchat, it has desktop mode as well. Thanks for replying. I'm trying to learn sign language for like 2 weeks now and became enthusiastic about it on VRchat , the deaf community is so friendly there and it acts like a bridge between the hearing and the deaf community to expand both worlds and get more understanding for each other.

    At 5:35 Bill starts a lesson question. "NAME SOMETHING ITSELF BLACK WHITE" which means "Name something that is black and white." Katelyn struggles to think of something. Bill offers for the other students to raise their hand and provide answers. Bill fingerspells their answers for the camera and also gives their signs. We see ZEBRA, OLD MOVIE, NEWSPAPER. After their help, Bill asks Katelyn again and she provides the answer TUX, for tuxedo. Bill signs that a tux reminds him of a PENGUIN.
    He spends longer on this than usual before pulling up the question on the screen behind him at 7:15 to continue the lesson.
    At 13:30 Bill asks Katelyn if she finished watching the movie Titanic. She nods yes.

      Lauren,
      As my dad told me many years ago -- you can do anything you set your mind to!
      Here's a page with some notes regarding becoming a terp.
      www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/interpreter-howtobecome.htm
      The information is more of a historical perspective at this point in time (almost two decades later) but it might provide you a bit of a foundation in related terminology.
      Warm regards,
      + Dr. Bill

    Hello, I have a question on deaf ettiquitte. If two people are having a conversation in sign, is it rude to watch, even if you don't understand that much? Is it considered eavesdropping?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 роки тому +24

      Staring at two strangers conversing (in any language) is considered "gawking."
      In the Deaf world there are not that many appropriate times to "gawk." It is okay to watch two (non-public figure) individuals chatting in sign language if/when you are at an ASL social which has been advertised as having been set up for ASL students (unless you start getting signals of annoyance or they turn away from you on purpose).
      It is okay to watch a professional interpreter interpreting in public.
      It is okay to watch public presentations or storytelling by Deaf people in clearly established "performance" situations.
      Other than those types of situations it is generally not a good idea to watch us Deaf folks signing. We don't know if you do or don't know ASL. When I'm out on a date with my wife (who is also Deaf) I don't mind folks coming up and letting me know they recognize me from UA-cam but to just "stare" at us would be creepy.

Any chance someone can translate?

    Hi Dr. Bill! I love your videos they have been so helpful in my journey to learn ASL. Can you touch on signing for more “rural” areas? For example, My family lives in a very small town, that could never be considered a city. Is there another sign to indicate TOWN instead of CITY or would you use other terms like COUNTRY or RURAL? Thanks so much!

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  4 роки тому +5

      While some folks use the "COUNTRY" sign (either the Y hand or flat hand version) to refer (in context) to a "rural" area -- others just sign FARM AREA or FARM CITY. If you need to indicate that a place is a town then you can just sign SMALL CITY -- or do the sign CITY using a small movement and a cute facial expression.

    for colors say you have one that is dark blue or dark red how would you sign that? would you sign just red or blue or would you sign black then blue/red?

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  2 роки тому +1

      You would "not" sign black to mean dark.
      The common way to indicate darkness or intensity of a color is to sign "dark" before doing the color sign.
      You can do a color sign more intensely while using an intense facial expression. Adding intensity to a color sign doesn't specifically mean "dark" but rather it means "very."
      If you add intensity to the signing of a bright color such as "white" it can mean "bright white."
      If you add intensity to a color sign like yellow or green it can mean "vibrant yellow" or "vibrant green."

      @sign-language  4 роки тому +7

      There are 60 lessons in the main series plus dozens of other expansion topics and around 30 lessons (so far) in the Vocabulary Expansion Series.
      See this page for the L1 - L60 Lessons:
      www.lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lessons.htm
      If you watch all 450 or so of my videos you will certainly be able to hold a conversation with a Deaf ASL signer who chooses to sign at a moderate pace. Does that mean you are "fluent" -- no. It means you'll have a grasp of basic ASL -- enough to hold a conversation. To be truly fluent will take thousands of hours of study and practice. My videos and website can help you get to the point where you can start understanding online vlogs from other Deaf creators and eventually start going to ASL Socials and Deaf events and learning from local Deaf fluent signers via conversation.

    • @sign-language
      @sign-language  27 днів тому

      No you should not sign word for word.
      How you sign at the beginning of a conversation will likely be different from how you sign at the end of the same conversation as you establish your referents.
      You should sign in ways that are clear to your audience.
      That will be heavily influenced by context, their familiarity with your topic, and what you have discussed so far in the same conversation.

      Eh? Upset? Perhaps -- but I think she was simply in "active learner mode" in a "high stress situation." Those early videos were literally being cable broadcast live to over 5,000 households as part of a public education program. My goal was to make her stretch and grasp and learn a at a fast pace. She did a great job and by the end of ASL 1 she had made wonderful progress. Very proud of her for being a gutsy student, putting it all out there and letting the world see her mistakes and successes.
