New developments with herbicide resistance in Palmer and Waterhemp

  • Farmers with waterhemp or Palmer amaranth problems may be realizing herbicide resistance is increasing rapidly, but in a strange way. Univ. of IL weed researcher Dean Riechers and some global colleagues have found that populations of those weeds may have to be genetically tested for each field to determine what group of herbicides might offer some degree of control. That will be tedious and expensive, as Riechers explains in this short video. He says chemical companies are trying to solve the issue with variable degrees of resistance, but until then, Riechers says farmers will have to implement a myriad of different methods to stay ahead of their resistance weeds.
