  • December 12th, 2022: Statement on the ongoing investigations in Belgium involving some members and staff of the European Parliament.
Thank you, Madam President! Well, there is not much to be said. A lot of facts have already come out and I am sure more will come out in the future. Perhaps some of them quite surprising in a most unpleasant sort of way. But you were right of course, Madam President, that the European Parliament was targeted by the "bad guys", and probably they considered the Parliament to be a place with several weak spots and - indeed - they succeeded to a degree that shocked a lot of us. So I always wonder and ask myself to what extent is it a problem of personal weaknesses of our colleagues, former colleagues or staffers, and to what extent is it a problem of a system, of a structure, of rules and procedures. Probably both elements should be taken into account and I wish there could be some kind of a critical, objective analysis of this phenomenon. After all, this is a huge institution, very complex and not easy to manage. But such a critical analysis should be conducted by somebody from outside, not from our midst, for obvious reasons - that we are more interested in sustaining this institiution and defending it, no matter what we say openly. So I would suggest that we should have a sort of critical description of the way such an institution functions. Perhaps that would give us an insight into what was wrong and how to prevent similar developments from happening in the future. And one last point - one thing that will certainly not improve the reputation of the European Parliament: pompous, highfalutin rhetoric. This will not help. I mean, I have an impression that we very much like to indulge in sort of lofty language. That didn't help in the past, hasn't helped and won't help. Just do something real. We want the real thing. Not the rhetoric. Rhetoric is a very easy thing.

Do not pretend there’s any structure possible which is immune to individual corruption, please! Only a few basic things are needed:
    1. Transparency.

    3. Complete transparency.

And when did Parliament listen to the people, where and when can we voted in important thing ?
Where do we have democratic European Parlament ??
I believe European Parlament leaders work for US interest, and Europe would suffer and collective collapse because of this.
Bye bye to wealthy Europe when Europe are forced to buy expensive LPG gas and oil from US.
Be dependent on shipping expensive LPG gas and oil from the other side of the globe -US, would not be good for Europe in the future.
And not good for the globe, when we know only 15 huge ship's letting out more pollution than every car on the globe 🌎
Unbelievable to witnesses this insanity, no secret anymore what US working on in Ukraine since 2013.
People should see some education videos from US Professor John Mearsheimer, he knew year's back what US working on and planned in Ukraine since 2013.
Everything he predicted and warned about year's ago when it comes to Ukraine and US involvement.
We all witnesses happening right now, see some education videos from US Professor John Mearsheimer, it's his job to know what US working on around the world.
He knew US decided years ago using Ukraine as a battleground for their proxywar against Russia.
Trying to weakening Russia, US professor John Mearsheimer Said stop provoking Russia multiple times .
But US didn't care listen, they decide that Europe should be dependent on US expensive LPG gas and oil shipped from the other side of the globe.
And that Europe should not be dependent on cheap gas and oil directly from pipelines from their neighbor.
      Just unbelievable.......

When politicians accept money and gifts from outside, it’s for their insight and influence behind the scenes.. the mechanics on how best to achieve an end result. This does indicate as you suggest.. personal weakness and political machinery that’s not fit for purpose, either unable or unwilling to process business. Big job ahead..

When are Europeans going to admit the simple fact that the European Union is a colossal failure, as all federations are bound to be? I am a Canadian, and I am not afraid to admit that our federation is a colossal failure. The weakness of every federation is that politicians always end up pandering to the areas governed that are the most populous and the most economically powerful in order to get into and remain in power, and then those areas end up dominating the entire federation economically and politically.

No. The EU is designed Oligarchy focused on Mercantilism and that leads to concentration of power under key power brokers and what constitutes corruption a slippery slope. The change a while back to put the key committee posts under the control of just two parties has left the parliament wide open. The original motive was to keep UK Centre-Right out of posts when we were members in an act of racial bullying effectively voted for by a majority of MEPs, Brexit was an earlier reaction (making accusations of us leaving for no reason from the perpetrators particularly despicable), but now there are further consequences. Also lots of spare deputy commissioners floating around and a Commission president chosen as a racial sinecure, so long as she is anti Eastern Europe.

As Prof Legutko suggests, the problem is structural. The European Parliament has no coherent government or opposition, nor even organised party coalitions. MEPs vote essentially as individuals, to their own agenda. They are elected to a fixed term, on only the vaguest indication of policy, so their votes are really tradeable and negotiable. The agenda is set by the European Commission. The EC is appointed, not elected. It is sworn NOT to consider the interests of any member, and the Commissioners may again pursue personal agendas, answerable to no one. With only 27 Commissioners, each becomes a prime target for lobbying. This system facilitates corruption, so much so as to create the suspicion that it was designed for that very purpose.

Obviously many politicians at this point (particularly in the US)really only represent the highest contributor (cough) and or those with the most power. Economies and societal systems have become more broken over decades, with one band aid after another, while becoming more corrupted by individuals involved as time went on.
At this point citizens are voting on people who represent no values, and no issues that improve their lives.
IMO The economy and society will continue to decline in the West unless we implement a new system of societal management.
So let's break down why I think we need a completely new form of government and society and what it should look like in the 21st century. Actually not a government and society but a civilization.
Common desires for all citizens ex. Sustainable food, water, housing, security, health and well being, etc etc.
Presently we vote for a person or a group that is supposed to represent a populations values and needs. However, most people are fallible and easily corrupted. This is generally where all problems start with any and all systems of government and society.
What we NEED if we want a strong, vibrant, sustainable, evolving civilization is to take the "representative" person or group out of the equation and have all decision making made by criteria. Criteria that can't be corrupted. The "Criteria" determined by its citizens and forged in their Constitutions and in law based on their values and needs.
Obviously, I can't detail the entire system in a post on your site. However, as an example, "spending" would have to be justified by criteria that force logical and positive decision making based on common requirements/desires of all citizens ex. Sustainable food, water, housing, security, health and well being etc etc.
    Obvious spending Criteria:
    1) is it necessary ?
    2) does it harm anything or anyone
    3) is it sustainable
    4) does it result in a "net positive" improvement in the lives for its citizens
    5) does it improve efficiency
    6) etc etc I could go on for days with many layers
My vision here would see those in "Government" as administrators only. All decisions made by "criteria" would be administered by those in government. As strange as this new form of government might sound..... I believe the first society to implement it will become the fastest growing/thriving and most powerful civilization in the world.
    Don C.

An elected official, to be worthy of the position to which he/she is elected (or hired), must have sufficient character as to be able to subordinate self-interest to interest in and service to the greater good. That is pretty much common knowledge. That is an underlying factor of any oath of allegiance sworn to by any who take up employment in any collective body. In fact, some organizations actualy conduct background checks on individuals being considered as potential future members of said organizations. And so an individual, having passed the tests for entrance, is allowed entry. But, in recognition of the fact that strength of character varies from person to person, and may strengthen or weaken in any person, we have to ask, "What happens between the times of swearing in, swearing the oath of allegiance, and that of succumbing to temptation? Don't we also have to recognize the fact that the first allegiance is always to oneself, according to one's beliefs and perception, to one's own greater good? This contradicts the deeper meaning of the oath taken, that being that the individual is to sacrifice his/her own interests in service to the greater good. Commit suicide if necessary.
Asking/demanding self-sacrifice from another is easier to do than demonstrating by one's own behavior that which is asked of the other. And there is the main flaw, isn't it? Who among us is not primarily self-interested, willing to "do as one must" in order to survive? "Strength of Character" is but a myth.

He has a point about it being the problem not just of personal weaknesses of the corrupt colleagues, but also how the system is set up. From what I have seen in life so far, any system that can be abused will be abused. So, I guess, it is more important to set the system in a way that will make it difficult to exploit. We do that elsewhere. For example, if a web site is taken down by a group of hackers, the web developers will immediately investigate what went wrong and try to fix it so that the same thing doesn't happen again. The fact that the political systems all over the world seem to remain corrupt makes me think that whoever has set them up wants them like that.
