  • Hello!
Welcome to Edible Thoughts Makes. My name is Stephanie (she/her/hers). This episode is a little different from my “full episodes” or my other mini-episodes. This episode recaps some of the highlights from our recent trip to Japan and Taiwan and also includes what I packed in my knitting notions pouch and what project(s) I brought with me!
What you'll find when in this episode:
00:00 Intro/Welcome/What I’m Wearing and Working On During the Video
07:50 Knitting Notions and Finished Project (related to travel chat)
    20:45 Japan Highlights
    37:26 Taiwan Highlights
Closed captioning and video descriptions are included for accessibility (choose the non-auto-generated option).
    Cheers!
    Stephanie

Thanks for sharing, Stephanie! As a 65 year old mother and grandmother with children in other parts of the world, I know your family appreciates the effort you’ve made to travel and see them, and make memories for your children as well. No worries about getting emotional - you’re just tired! Also, as a fellow Minnesotan who thought we were going to sneak through this winter without snow - not this year!

Thanks so much for being so open and sharing with us Stephanie! As a first generation daughter of immigrants, the sentiment of not being quite of one place or the other definitely resonates. We were lucky that our extended family was much closer and we made our yearly trip down for the summer as an “American cousin contingency” as we call it and the memories I have of sharing extended periods of time with my grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins are absolutely priceless. ❤

Hi Mia! 100% this. I am also the first generation born in the US to immigrant parents and I feel less alone in the "in between" as many have shared similar sentiments in the comments here. As the only ones from my Dad's immediate family to live in the US, we're the "American cousins." Thank you for sharing and sending so much love to you my friend ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you so much for sharing this trip with us, Stephanie! I just got back from Arizona (the other side of the country from me) for a quick trip to visit my 95 year old grandfather and I got emotional right along with you when you were talking about how special and important spending time with extended family is. This was the first time since I was a very small child that I'd had a visit with a grandparent *without* my parents and siblings also there and it was such a different but sweet experience, hearing stories from him and my aunt and uncle and watching them get to know and love my husband who they'd only met at our wedding. I'm so glad you were able to spend time with such a lot of your family on this visit.

Thank you so much for sharing the details of your trip, such beautiful sights. I'm happy for you that you got to have the whole family together. That is not easy to do these days when people live in various places. Isn't that a strange experience, the exhaustion of travel and time changes, and the joy of seeing new things and being together, kind of a mixed salad of experience. But so special.

sounds like you had the most wonderful trip. Many of us never have the opportunity to go back to the country of our origin, or are lucky enough to be able to ever see our older family members again. It is extremely emotional to talk about. But it is wonderful that your children got to see their great grandparents and other relatives, as well as to experience your culture in Taiwan first hand. Thank you for talking about your trip. I saw what we call custard apples in one of the clips and I was thrown back to my childhood. My aunt and uncle had a tree right outside their dining room and we children would wait anxiously for them to ripen!

Stephanie, I so enjoyed hearing about your trip and seeing wonderful scenes from Japan and Taiwan. The bamboo forest brought back a long-forgotten memory from my childhood. There was a small bamboo forest in the Hampton Park Zoo grounds here in Charleston SC back in the 1950s-60s. I loved that little bamboo patch as a child, because it was so different from the big oaks and palmetto trees all around Charleston. Thank you for this enriching hour!

So glad to hear of how things went--not only because it's fun to hear about, but my family and I will be flying from Florida to Australia in June (a dream of mine and even my doctor said to go now, don't wait), so it's 2.5 hours to Texas and then 17 to Sydney...I cannot wrap my head around being on a plane for 17 hours and then as you said, the time change, I know I won't really sleep, hoping the kids feel okay... I also am still unsure of what to take as travel knitting....everything else, we pack as light as we can I just have to use my carry-on for all my medical supplies so that's not really easy to work out but I will have space as it's used up to bring home some fibery souvenirs (no Kangaroos though). Anyway--you don't want to hear all that 😂 What a wonderful opportunity for your family to come together! Glad it all went well Stephanie and hope you can do it again soon.

Hi Jessica!! The time on long flights pass in a really strange way since you don't really move and can't really sense what time it is. The hours seem to pass by strangely fast (unless a kid is upset...then 30 seconds feels like an eternity ...for everyone...lol). I mean, it's still a REALLY long time but often not as long as I think it'll feel?? Maybe?? Or maybe it's because I'm still a little jet-lagged that I'm not remembering...lol. Though it was really funny, on one of the flights, we sat at the gate for some time after boarding and then taxied for some time before taking off and when we were taxiing, we heard a kid say "are we there yet??" It was hilarious. Not even close kid lol.
SO excited for you and your family though!!! It'll be all worth it!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for an awesome podcast, Stephanie! What an awesome treat to be able to see Japan and Taiwan scenes! Glad your family had a wonderful trip. Love to be able to go these countries one of these days!
Yes, is priceless, four generations all together! Wowza, your grandparents are super awesome at such lovely age, wishing them continue super health and wisdom! We had the same problem. My kids’ grandparents was in China and we live in US, so seeing them or calling them was kind of hard. Sadly, they since passed when my kids were young.
My daughter wants to go Taiwan for a few years already. I speak some mandarin from one year of Mandarin in college, I read traditional characters ok. I don’t know if I’ll be able to converse. I speak fluent Cantonese. Some of the words in Mandarin are very similar in Cantonese. However, the majority are not. Is November a good time to go? Will there be less mosquitoes? How’s transportation in Taiwan? Are there places you recommend we should see?
Thanks so much for sharing, happy knitting!❤

Thank you so much!!! Thank you so much for sharing part of your story❤️. I've never been in Taiwan in November - but I imagine it's 60's-80's F and really pleasant! Mosquitos are awful year round and worse in the summer....Maybe you'll get lucky and they won't eat you!! In the big cities, you've got trains and the high-speed rail is AMAZING. Otherwise there are always taxis. I wouldn't recommend driving yourself, the roads are hectic and there are lots of pedestrians, scooters, and bikes everywhere (though probably depends on where you go!).
I don't feel like I can really give recommendations on where to go for an entire country (even though it's a small island!!). I would recommend checking out travel guide books on Taiwan and seeing what interests you. There are probably lots of travel vloggers who have videos on UA-cam as well! There are lots of museums, foods to eat, sights to see, mountain and ocean views, etc. Taiwan has a lot to offer!! Take care❤️

Ooh in the clip of fruit from Taiwan I recognized one that I’ve had when I visit family in Chile. The creamy white interior with big black seeds is called chirimoya in Chile….also not sure if that is just how it’s called in Chile or officially in Spanish. Lots of food words in Chile are not used in other Spanish speaking countries.

I also share your feelings about how it really is special when there is the opportunity to see family and get to spend time together especially when it’s not something you get to have that time very often. We got to have a family trip to Chile this year and my cousin was so thoughtful about getting all the family gathered at his house since over time the family in Chile has also spread out across the country and it’s getting harder to see everyone when we visit. So glad you got to go and have that time and that you shared a little bit with us ❤❤❤

Thank you for sharing Giselle!! I believe that fruit is a type of "Sweet Apple" but the English name is so misleading because it's NOTHING like an apple. And there are so many different varieties of it - we had two different ones when we were in Taiwan! YES there just aren't words that go between all languages which makes sense because some things aren't found in other countries!

I loved hearing about your family and trip. So so neat to see how in their 90's, they're doing amazing things. Do you think there's a way to visit and accommodate gluten free diet restrictions? All the best, Stephanie! - Kimberly

To be honest, I think it would be difficult (but not impossible....). Most places did not have ingredients listed at restaurants/food vendors and couldn't guarantee anything not having certain ingredients or any cross contamination. That being said, Google "traveling to Japan with a gluten-free diet" and you'll find some blogs from travelers on their experiences and recommendations! Thank you so much Kimberly❤️

@@EdibleThoughtsMakes Thanks for weighing in. I'd love to visit someday and I always try to ask friends who go for a start on how to handle it. Glad you guys had so much fun! That journaling store was amazing!

Your trip sounds amazing. Do your girls speak any Mandarin or Taiwanese? I want to take my family back to Taiwan sometime. I’m also making the Skyline tee test. I thought of using Linen Quill, but I really wanted to use a hand dyed cotton I had. I hope I like it.

Thank you! Not really, they know certain words but nothing in a sentence. So excited for your potential future family trip to Taiwan!! YAY for testing the Skyline Tee together!! A cotton one sounds lovely to wear in warmer weather. Take care!❤️
