Today I wanted to review one of my FAVORITE filmmaking/photography tools: the polarpro peter mckinnon variable ND filter. This filter comes in two editions: the signature edition (which is a normal, clear ND) and the Mist edition (which is a variable ND filter combined with a fine mist diffusion filter). When I was originally researching these filters, i found it hard to decide between the signature edition and the mist edition, so now that I finally have my hands on both, I want to break down the differences between the two filters and make my general recommendation as to which one may be best for you!

Please, do you know Why the VND 3-5 Stop (and Mist 3-5 Diffusion VND) are not compatible with the ULTRA wide lens of the iphone (it is notice on the site), please ? Is it a strict incompatibility ? what is the phenomemon please ?
I loved the video and the golden colored-vibes of the video!
You use the higher stops when using faster lens, and while shooting log where it automatically bumps the iso.
Best vid I've seen about the filters so far, amazing quality too.
Great video you’ve helped me
to make my decision think I’ll get a separate Tiffen 1.8 to add to my variable ND filter.
Thanks for this info Joseph. I've been going back and forth between the mist v signature edition. This makes it easier, especially for the 6-9 stop. Great content brotha
Great video, I have an RF 15-35. Stack 2 filters at 15mm and you get vignetting in the corners. (A problem I have encountered with a regular ND and a polarizer for landscape, now I’m buying nd’s with built in polarizers for that purpose). At 20mm it goes away so you could stack them if you’re shooting at 24mm prime or so. I have also noticed 24p f2.8 1/50 at midday bright sun, I have been using a 6-9.
I can't believe a year ago I bought the mist edition even after watching multiple reviews on explaining what it is and what it does and I thought it was to act like a polarizer on an ND. But now I'm rewatching the video reviews and I'm realizing that it's meant to give blown out highlights a glow out softening. Luckily I didn't use the ND filter at all due to me taking a break from video but now that I'm getting back to it especially now that I have my Canon R5 I must buy the signature edition and maybe sell my mist edition.
Great video as always! Quality through the roof!
Thank you!
Thanks the honest review! Just what I needed.
Glad I could help!
i have seen like 10 videos about the nd filters. I had the old one and broke it, so I need to buy one, but you explain it so well
Came back and he's still grinding. Best channel on youtube!
my man!
Excellent detailed explanation!!! it helped me make my decision. You couldn’t have said it better.
Glad I could help!
literally the video i needed
This is very very good review tbh. Was about to order mist edition not thinking about it being used to diffuse lights at night where i don't need VND. decided to go with signature and think that observation was great on your part. time watching well spent!
Thank you so much! I’m glad the video was helpful for you. Enjoy the VND!
Great video!
Great review, I have bought the signature today (already had the myst) and I noticed that the defender in that one is slightly different design, in your videos it shows as well 1:05, in addition I feel the defender on the myst is tight then the signature (a bit loose).
I was actually going to mention this about the defender in the review but it didnt make the final edit! Personally, i like the defender on the signature edition better because it’s easier to take off. I guess that means its less secure but the mist edition ones take a little too much prying action for my liking
@@JosephMartin thank you for the confirmation
Great video! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That video really helps! Thanks 👍🏻
Happy to help! Thanks for watching
I bought both... I still can't decide which one I like more. I only film weddings, so I'm leaning towards the MIST being my main, but I do worry it will wash out some shots too much.
If your shooting with a wide aperture in Australia during the day go the 6-9 stop. I shoot on an m6 with sigma 16mm f1.4 with the vnd 6-9
I decided to use signature edition plus Tiffen mist, But i don't know how to put them on lens at the same time...
Hey great vid, do you prefer the polar pro or the BW vnd filter ?
Thanks! I havent tried the b+w
Idk, rather just get a 1/8 promise and decide when I want that softened specular highlight look vs always having it
Thanks for the video
thanks for watching!
Which one do you recommend for portrait & wedding photography?
Non-mist for sure!
Do you also have looseness between the two rings on the filter ? I have that issue on mine, and I dont know if this is normal
Wdym by looseness? The front glass is supposed to rotate to give more or less shading but it should be smooth
@@JosephMartin the front ring doesnt align perfectly with tje 2nd ring on mine, at least i feel like theres some looseness between the two, but not a lot like 2 or 3mm but i wonder if it can affect the quality of the image
can you get the signature then just slap on an 1/8 tiffen for when you want the mist look?
Sure can!
How do you do that?
some video example wouldve been great vs talking about it. But the explanation was good
Question for me 2-5 or 6-9? Shooting R6 with 28-70 F2. Going to Australia in November and Hawaii next July
Photography or videography? Video it depends on if you’re shooting LOG. Photo depends on if you’re wanting long or short exposure
@@JosephMartin mostly photography
I’d probably say the 6-9 stop then, as NDs in photography are usually used for long exposure photos and 2-5 stops isnt always enough for that
A sunny day at the beach
at 4K 24P 50FPS F2.8 in video you would need a 6-9 stop don't you think?
Yes. The 2-5 stop is useless for people who use Sony cameras with SLog3. The base ISO for SLog3 is 640 if I remember. ISO 640 on a sunny day with a 2.8 or faster lens is going to be extremely bright. A 6-9 stop VND filter would be really useful.
Which one do you recommend for beauty videos?
It depends on if you’re trying to give an authentic view of your skin/makeup and whatnot. The mist will add a softening and smoothing effect to skin.
@@JosephMartin ok, so the signature edition is better.
mmm bit late on this but shooting wide open , 1.4 on a bright day with base iso of 800, Clog3, that's not weird unusual surely and certainly requiring a 6-9 nd?
Yep, it probably would! Everything depends on specific circumstances of course, but it’s pretty unusual with modern mirrorless/dslr cameras to have a base iso of 800. I’ve usually been able to work with the 2-5 stop shooting open at 1.8 and iso 100-400 outside on sunny days.
@@JosephMartin the native iso on the canon r5 shooting C-log3 is 800
@@Biketherapy113 yeah totally bit of an odd comment considering Joseph is shooting with a modern mirrorless camera of the same brand ;) That said I've pushed the canon R5 to 400 and couldn't really see any differences, very unscientific test though.
@@JosephMartinBase ISO of Canon CLog3 is at iso 800. I believe Sony SLog is 640. Higher ND stops will be very common with Log video formats.
Sony A7iv & A7iii have a baseline ISO of 800 if you’re shooting in SLog3 (which is extremely common) so if you’re outdoors with a aperture at 1.4 or 2.8 it seems like 6-9 would be needed..
00:40 is that a speck of DUST that I see?!?
edit - 01:14 ohhhh
Indeed. my room has dust in it xD
Made it more complicated
