There is little difference between a unification and an invasion if you actually take this as an example. You literally declare against others, take an army and then beat anyone who stands against you. If someone comes to your house, beats you up, empties your fridge and force your sun to join their gang, what does this sound like? A unification of the neighbourhood?
I am not against unification via diplomacy and in a historic context, it was certainly a different time but overall, nothing about going to war against the Greek city-states was a "unification". He just conquered what was on the peninsula and then moved on to Persia. Just like the US of North America didn't "unify" the North American plains.
Now, Alexander remains a brilliant leader and an inspiring figure and his victories ended up doing Greece (as a region) a lot of good but he was by no means someone who cared an awful lot about freedom.
The only people who did at the time, were folks like the Athenians - who he and his father oppressed as all rules as the time did with their subjects. By force. He can pardon them as much as he wants, still literally a tyrant by the ancient definition of the word.

Alright, I respect your work but as a Russian I am obliged to voice my objection. No, Chinese are NOT projected to become a majority in Far eastern Russia in 2040, or 2050, or ever. Russian Chinese diaspora is tiny, and most of it is concentrated in Moscow ant Saint Petersburg, not in the Far East. Chinese aren't migrating to Russia for the same reason Japanese are't - China is now wealthier than Russia, there is no economic incentive for any sane Chinese to move there. I've seen some wild estimates of hundreds of thousands of Chinese living in Russia on English Wikipedia - that's probably where your ideas come from, and you are not the first one to fall for this - but they are batshit false, based on exaggerated numbers from 15 years ago (back when China was still poorer than Russia so Chinese immigrants in Russia still existed; they've largely returned to China long ago).
It's also important to remember that while Chinese Notheast is indeed much more populous than Russian Far East, it is also the Rust Belt of China with one of the lowest standarts of living in the country, so its population is quickly declining due to internal migration to the much wealthier provinces of Southern China; it also has one of the lowest fertility in the world, way below 1 child per family. Chinese Northeast might look like a demographic Behemoth in comparison to Russian Far East, but it's going through lardge scale depopulation: there is no demographic pressure to expand there. I don't even mention the fact that Russia has nukes so going to war with it to annex one of its worst lands is pretty unreasonable to say the least.

    • @ThatCrazyKid0007

Russia has always leaned more to Europe than Asia, hell most of Russia on the map is just the imperial colony of the chunk of Russia that lies in the eastern part of the great Northern European plain. Russia was on good terms with America until end of WWII when the capitalist-socialist disagreement about how to manage the recovering European continent lead to the Cold War. As much as Russia wants to spite America, at least America can't encroach on their soil directly. Meanwhile China is right there just salivating at the opportunity to take the increasingly fertile chunk of land that is far east Russia which could really weaken the country, plus to take away the Russian influence in central Asia which Russia benefits from in terms of oil and natural gas. Ultimately if it hadn't been for the Cold War Russia would definitely be an American ally against China, but for now they are playing along with them for their gains, but they are more than cautious of letting China grow too powerful before and inevitably turn on them.
Meanwhile, America's best bet of slowing China down and keeping them in check would be a strong Russia and somewhat capable India as they could suit a good support role to Russia in keeping China in check. Unfortunately America turned Russia away too much during the Cold War that until China starts directly fucking with Russia and their interests, America cannot count on them.

I wouldn’t be particularly excited about that tbh. Conservative Americans like him or Zeihan tend to ignore most of the subtle, extremely intricate ways EU nations are intertwined. Because (at least until now) EU institutions mostly lack sweeping executive powers and visible charismatic heads, some American observers get annoyed by the EU and dismiss it as a glorified free market, that will lose its grip on its eastern (former Soviet or Ottoman) portions
All of which ignores some of the most important features of EU politics such as its successful efforts for societal cohesion (Erasmus, common currency, interconnected energy grids...) the fact that Brexit has actually made the EU stronger by undermining “separatist” movements in other nations... Not to mention the EU’s lead in many technologies, sustainable development and the soft power and example it poses to many other blocs, like Latin America, the AU and ASEAN.
In the end, the fact that Americans and Europeans tend to look down on each other for sport won’t help this channel get an accurate, nuanced view of Europe imo

    • @ThatCrazyKid0007
      @ThatCrazyKid0007 3 роки тому +19

It's pretty complicated. Russia will try to encroach further into eastern Europe as it always has, except this time the eastern European nations aren't going to wait to be sacrificed by the west to slow down Russia. There are strong movements already for collaboration and economic relations between the eastern European states, there is a good video about it over on Caspian Report. If Russia comes knocking, they will be ready to flip them off and will have enough western aid to stand by themselves. Crimea was a big red alert for them, especially Poland who knows all too well how it goes with Russia. I don't think Russia will be able to exercise its muscles militarily yet, but the economic influence is definitely going to be their main tool to strongarm the region, so expect a mostly economic tug of war for the time being.
Unfortunately Belarus and Ukraine are stuck in Russia's sphere of influence entirely, Belarus especially is entirely fucked and might even cease to exist in the near future as they integrate back in Russia (though the people seem to be resisting so there is hope), while Ukraine could potentially split in half or entirely fall into Russia's hands due to historical and cultural ties between the two, as well as the mixed Russian population.
The Balkans are interesting too. Turkey will try to influence the region once more, which again will mostly be an economic tug of war as they are limited militarily by NATO. Contrary to what this channel thinks, if there is one thing that could unite the Balkans it would be a Neo-Ottoman threat, so Turkey would have a really hard time to step a foot in the Balkans outside eastern Thrace. This is why they'll mostly focus in spreading influence and control over the Middle East and Caucases, leading and supporting Turkic nations such as Azerbaijan. The Balkans will see a continued stream of investment from all sides and it will be a real multipolar economic war of influence in the region. If they play their cards right, they could profit well off of it, unfortunately the corruption in most of their governments will make that difficult, but for the most part expect an economic growth in the region. The EU countries will continue to benefit from the Western alliance, while the rest of the Balkans will have investment from China, Russia and the Arabs. The only problem is the unstable Bosnian status quo that God knows how much longer will be kept and if Albania gets too aggressive with their minorities abroad trying to unify them.
As for the EU, it entirely depends which direction the EU political elite wants to steer it. The British fucked off from the continent and are looking to establish their trading zone with their commonwealth allies, so continental Europe will largely depend on how well Germany and France play nice with each other. I expect it to continue functioning fairly well as a trading union, but as a unified political and legislative entity I can definitely see friction and tension with the Eastern European members as well as their own populace not being too keen on certain immigrants. For the most part it will be business as usual unless something really major happens of course. Nordics will continue as they have enjoying prosperity and being too far from any realistic external threat (don't think Russia is too keen to take on Finland once more for now). The central European countries bar Hungary and Poland will follow whatever Germany's lead is, France will continue to focus on their continental and abroad interests in Africa and I've no fucking clue where the Mediterranean EU nations (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece) will be headed, their economies are struggling and are all too dependent on EU loans, largely from Germany. The Benelux states will be pretty much business as usual as well, while Switzerland gonna Switzerland some more. Like I mentioned, Poland is leading the charge in making Eastern Europe work together and to be strong enough to resist a potential Russian threat, meanwhile Hungary seems to be trending towards some moderately closed off conservative Christian society that is gonna stick out like a sore thumb from the rest of the liberal EU in Central Europe.
This is a layman's expectations for the next 10, maybe 20 years. Farther than that there is a lot more take into account and who knows what'll happen.

Japan actually got experience for that .Back in 70s to 80s japan also same as china growing very fast and almost surpass usa.Japan is liberal democracy country same as usa and the alliance of usa. When usa find that japan was like "dominated" the country with tech and the economy that almost surpass usa and same as this day anti asian sentiment happen. Its make usa giving some tariff or some "sanctions" or something that make japan weak forced down and become stagnant. And now japan is developed country but they never surpass usa and now just stagnant. If china was democracy not communist,I bet china was "down"become western alliance. And when they growth very fast, the us will put anything to forced china down and stagnant. But the reality china was communist socialist country and so they are never as western alliance .So when they growth, the us hard or cannot forced them down because different ideology means different policy different way between two country.
Edit:What I means it's just make stoppable, because usa like and always "espionage"another country and forced them to alliance with us.When there is some of american friend country or alliance that having growth very quickly and almost challenging usa,the america will put some tariff,or sanction forced them down to it's knees and become stagnant even it's developed country(most usa alliance or they very close friend was stagnant developed country) if china (let's just say not communist but another ideology that combined democracy and communist or whatever) I bet america will do anything to giving some "freedom or democracy" to china and maybe even worst like they do in middle east.Because america always forced to all of the country follow they path.

The “think in centuries” part is honestly kind of overblown and is the perception is partially a product of Chinese Propaganda.

Khabarovsk region had the most Chinese ( 3898 out of 1343869 people ) and the biggest share in total population of the region (0.29%). The numbers for 2002 census in Khabarovsk region were 3815 people and 0.27% There is another census ongoing and the results ought to be available by next year.
Based on personal experience I'd say the share of each nationality doesn't change much and what changes do happen are driven mostly by the migration from Far East to warmer and richer European parts of Russia or by migrant workers from Central Asia.

That means the only border with China Siberia has is to the west of Mongolia and is less than 100km long and runs through the snowy peaks of Altay mountains. I've never heard anyone considering anything south of those mountains as part of Siberia, nor considering Mongolia or territories east of it as part of Siberia given how different they are from Siberian boreal forest.
But even if you somehow extend the definition naming parts of China - Siberia and say there's a lot of Chinese in China's Siberia, it's still hardly a reason for concern in Russia. The Turks simply carried the Roman legacy without taking Rome or their culture and religion...even that is a bad analogy, The Roman Empire and the Ottomon Empire were too completely distinct empires with different cultures and stuff. When the Ottomons conquered Constatinople they simply changed the entire culture there, they didn't copy any form of Roman culture other than the Hagia Sophia which was changed into a Masjid/Mosque.

Part 4: Cultural View - Just passed 10 years as an American living and running a business in China, and I can say that this whole section is off the mark. People often assume the cultural revolution succeeded in its stated goal of eliminating ancient Chinese culture, but it didn't succeed. It should be framed as "the memes that have been passed down for thousands of years in the region & created the foundation of the culture are so robust that even a concerted attempt by the people in power failed to eradicate them." TCR undoubtedly wounded the civilization and they are still healing, but there are Daoist, Confucian, and Buddhist influences everywhere, especially in the language itself. You can't ignore these things and have an accurate view of modern Chinese culture. Also, like the USA, China is not a cultural monolith. I live in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan in the Sichuan basin. The culture here is remarkably friendly, focused on a good work/life balance, tolerant, and highly optimistic. There are countless more examples I could give of the nuance that is missing in the section, but my recommendation would be for folks to expand their research on the cultural topic. @Whatifalthist Overall, excellent video.

China is not monolithic, yes, but there are certain themes which are sufficiently present to still be useful, like Confucianism. Confucianism never dies. You have left the same comment on 10 other videos by him, all saying "I feel the narrator is deeply religious and right-wing". You're a troll with too much free time.

I know that this is not something I see people shouting about much in the comments, but I just wanted to say that your writing on this particular video, as well as your performance of it, was top-notch. Probably your best work.
I've watched most of your videos, and gain valuable insights from them, while disagreeing with you on some aspects of each of your analyses, but this is the first time that I've listened to your videos and been really wowed by the script and also by the presentation of it.
You make each of your main points sound impactful, while not over-dramatizing (mostly) any of it, and you have at least one very memorable turn of phrase in each and every section, catching the listener's ear. Particularly in your "How China wins" section, you do a fantastic job of presenting this very grave and frightening subject in a manner which feels genuinely scary for the listener, but without ever dipping into scare tactics or emotionally manipulative dogwhistles.
