Sam made up a fake story to get Nate out of retirement, claiming that Sam needs to find the treasure or else Alcazar will hunt down Sam. When in reality, it was Rafe who got Sam out, and they searched for the treasure together a bit until Sam betrayed Rafe by getting Nate and Sully to help Sam get the treasure for himself.
Their chemistry is just amazing. It's too bad they had a falling out. One of the best duos in gaming history. EDIT: Can we all just appreciate the music of this game?
