+Walter White For the average person who doesn't have rose-tinted glasses on, the prison break scene was a horrible addition to the game. Going all the way back to the time of Shakespeare, play writers knew that if an event didn't happen on stage, then it didn't happen in the minds of the audience. So if in Romeo & Juliet, there was a scene where the Capulet and Montague families were to be on stage talking about Romeo and Juliet dying, and never actually showed them die, then their deaths never happened from the audiences perspective. This logic works in reverse, where if the audience sees something happen on-screen, then it tells the audience that this actually happened. Considering that this prison break scene gave control over Sam, and permitted him to die in this segment, it tells the audience that this actually happened to Sam. However, the game pulls the rug right out from under the audience, and reveals that that entire sequence was a complete and utter lie all in an attempt to make a crappy M. Night Shyamalan plot twist. In any honest person's mind, they're thinking "Then what was the point of that sequence? I basically wasted my time playing that!" It was a poor attempt at a plot twist that not only breaks the rules of basic screenwriting, but is also an insult to the audience.
I love how Nadine and Rafe are convinced that the Drake brothers don't have the guts to pull the trigger, as if they haven't left a mountain's worth of bullet-filled bodies all over the island at this point.
The brothers take lives in a kill or be killed sense with their men. They wouldn't just needlessly murder someone and Sam attempting to do that just now is what shocked Nate, Rafe, Nadine and the audience when they saw it. Sam really lost sight of who he was in that moment and was going to ruthlessly execute her. That's why it was shocking to watch.
You know something? Naughty Dog could've made a somewhat shameless promotional comment if they went through that route. Like then Rafe would've said something like Rafe: "Whoa whoa whoa? Crash Bandicoot? The game made by Naughty Dog? I love that game. Man, you ever got a high score on that boulder dash bit?" Nate: "Oh don't remind me. My wife, Elena, holds the high score on that." Rafe: "You don't say? Hey did you heard they're going to remaster the first 3 games?" Nadine: "Rafe..." Rafe: "what?" Nadine: "Stop promoting another game franchise and end this....or I will..." Rafe: "....well you heard the lady..."
Nan Anderson Nate and Elena discussed this in Chapter 17: For Better Or Worse. They said it was probably because Sam wanted to try to find more clues and didn’t want Rafe to catch his bluff which would’ve happened if he went missing for a week to find Nate.
@@nananderson7259 Maybe Rafe didn't want him to look for Nate.. I mean, Rafe already hates and is jealous of Nate at this time. I guess I didn't want him to join the treasure hunting at all.

I knew he wasn't going to attack his brother but it was an uneasy feeling. It wasn't until they got separated on that makeshift bridge thingy that I realized that was what it was going to be looming in the air.
There really are 2 sides to look at Samuel Drake.... A. Yes, his lying Nathan about how Hector Alcazar had a noose around his neck for getting outta prison is a dick move. He essentially used Nathan's sentimentality over his older brother to his own ends. Kinda screwed up in retrospect if you look at the flashbacks in this game.... B. Here's where I might end up sympathizing.... his and Nathan's mother died, then their father pawned off her stuff and dumped them in a Catholic orphanage. And once he finds his mother's journal, that's when the obsession of finding Avery's treasure began. He and Nathan wanted to do it TOGETHER. But after Sam was left to rot in his cell after his "death," he was all alone for 13 years, so the obsession just festered. And notice he's only focused on the treasure, while Nate has THAT and a wife and a father figure to focus on. Sam doesn't have that. He doesn't have a father figure or even a patient and understanding significant other to help ground him to reality and to get him to relax.... at least he doesn't have a chance to relax until he partners up with Sully. So in conclusion, Samuel Drake is, yes, a selfish dick. But he's also a guy struggling with life trying to find purpose in something when he has nothing or no one else in his life (still doesn't justify his BS)....
I was actually expecting Sam to fully betray Nathan..and was using him while being on Rafe's side. Either that, or I expected Sam to die on Avery's ship at the end.
Funnily enough, Sam working _with_ Rafe and betraying Nate, at least for a time, was the original draft of the story. In fact, artwork depicting this notion with Sam, Nate, and Elena can be found in the art gallery of Uncharted 4. It's only one picture from the original story, but it almost makes you wonder _"What If...?"_
I mean I kind of understand him, he knew that if he told Nate the thruth they wouldn't have found the treassure, which was all Sam ever wanted to do in life after he found out about his mother's journal and all of that. Sure it was selfish, but they came out alive, right? No harm done. He just achieved his life's goal. I actually feel bad for him that there had to be so much action with Rafe and Nadine and all of those guys. All he wanted to do was go on an adventure with nate and find it. No action and no Rafe.
@@Hanakin-Sidewalker That was a black market auction run by criminals. I'm not sure the security guards were innocents, since Nate, Sam, and Sully didn't exactly do anything that warranted the guards' intent to kill.
This was an awesome plot-twist, especially since it's one I didn't already get spoiled about before I played the game. I would go as far to say that this is one of the best plot twists I've ever played through. I mean, once you think about it, there were a lot of holes in Sam's story. Like why would Sam keep his prison clothes on after he escaped? Or how would Hector Alcazar simply "know" when Sam found the treasure? These are holes in Sam's story but you don't even realize it until after the twist is revealed. And then you feel kinda like an idiot but in an awesome way!
Jetrox4ever 1. I don't know, but it's not a good idea to keep on a prison shirt just 5 miles outside a prison 2. No. Alcazar was a druglord in Panama. I highly doubt he has unlimited knowledge of citizens in the United States
Sam didn't have any other clothes, in fact Sam probably didn't even bother describing this and the story was just visualised for us. Hector is built up to be powerful enough to get away with a lot of things and I don't think keeping tabs on just Sam would be too hard. Even then, this game series has had inexplicable moments of the characters being followed before so if the story was true it wouldn't be very hard to believe in the Uncharted universe
Aside from the clothes thing, I assume hector would have little problem tracking down Sam after the 3 months is up to see if he found the treasure or not.
Boxterades Productions absolutely, Uncharted series is one of my absolute favorites but I always felt the villains were cliches. Rafe is by far my fav villain in the series, still need to play Lost Legacy though
They really stepped up their villain game in UC4 and Lost Legacy. Never met two villains I wanted to slap silly as much as them. I've murdered my share of video game villains with dastardly plans. But no amount of genocide made me want to beat them as much as smug Rafe. Most punchable villain.
Diamond Beau I can't take that assface seriously with all the idiotic decisions he made. Really took away his credit for being a supposed brute, ruthless, and merciless asshole
Melissa Tavarez so... Is it bad that I immediately started liking him even though he is a villain? :D idk I have that strange bond with the villains where I can't hate them because they're brilliant
Dan Myers Same here! This one beats out TLOU for number one spot because this was the first game I played on the PS4, I just played TLOU recently. I just have a lot of good nostalgia for U4 that I can’t get with the other. Both are masterpieces though!
Sam is a badass, survived two gunshots and a hit to the face with a gun. My favorite character in Uncharted 4. Maybe Sam will get his own spin off game.
I love how Nate is such a heartwarming character with a good personality. Its just like he doesn't go beserk breaking random people's necks without a pint of remorse.
Kumie Same here, I never really trusted Sam, but god damn I didn't see that part with Rafe coming. They hinted at it, sure, but in a way that didn't just completely give it away.
The only thing I ever questioned/felt a little bit off was why Nadine knew Sam was Nate's brother and they were working together. And then in this scene, when Rafe acknowledges Sam, but not surprised or anything. A guy apparently dead 15 years an no one raises an eyebrow? But I chalked it up to me over thinking. I felt like Nate when all was revealed.
blinkandrhcp *Did you even pay attention? Rafe busted Sam out! Of course Rafe knew he was alive! And he would have told Nadine he was Nathan's brother too. Remember Sam has been out of jail for 2 years before this.*
Man it hurt to watch this the first time. I was worried my favorite character was going to actually die this time. Not to mention I trusted Sam and, while I understand why he lied, it still stings.
Blade Singer did you really? Nathan Drake literally survived a cursed zombie outbreak, hanging off a detailed train in the himalayas, going toe-to-toe with Yeti's of Shambala, beat the crap outta a Resin-Roided Russian Psycho Killer, survived an exploding plain in mid-air, walked through the Sahara for 3 days w/ no food and water, Escaped a Panamanian prison unharmed... And you think a little rock would kill him? haha

Again, the key word here is 'in cold-blood'. Sam and Nathan have killed numerous people in self-defence sure, but never with actual murderous intent. In fact, these are character who try not to use guns at every possible turn.
Lol as though killing Nadine here would be in cold blood and not self defense. These dudes kill without a conscience, its the entire point of what Lazarevic told him at the end of 2. Just another reason why this story isn't that good.
Can we just appreciate how brilliant Warren’s performance is here? Because I think about this cutscene more than any other in the game, and the first thing I always hear is his voice in my head going “ohh...what did he tell you?”
@@Literallyryangosling777 I wish they didn't use the word "luck" when they explained it because I feel like it still confuses people. The screen losing color is more like the enemies' shots are getting closer and closer because they're narrowing down their aim. It happens faster the higher the difficulty because enemies are more precise. You'll notice when you leave cover or pop out of cover the first few shots from enemies always miss. The only exceptions are like melee damage and MAYBE explosions, since it's heavily implied Nate's taking damage from the exploding mummies, just not the shrapnel or anything deadly like that. It's also why there's no fall damage and anything too high is instant death.
4:55 Rafe: I just need Sam. Nate: now you're making a mistake. Sam: Rafe don't, don't listen! I love the difference in reaction of these two. Nate is calm, wants to have not much causalities as possible, plus he still thinks Rafe was the same 15 years ago and didn't' expect him to actually shoot him. So Nate replied calmly and rationally, with a tone that sounded like he didn't expect Nate to really go through with it. Sam on the other hand, will not hesitate to shed blood if it meant saving their lives, evidenced by him holding Nadine hostage and actually nearly killing her if not for Nate stopping him, and he's worked with Rafe for 2 years and knows how aggressive he is now, especially after bailing on him. So his response is panic and his immediate defense to Nate.
Man this dude really played the hell outta the villian, I mean damn...they need to make this a live action movie, this is perfect...I mean....the subtly in the way this man talks is just phenomenal, his condescending undertone and his calm demeanor of the situation...this dude could literally be a bond villian....and the game developers!!! Man round of applause
Rafe is seriously one of the most entertaining villains in gaming, I cant help but chuckle at his quotes and facial expressions. Not to mention his "spoiled rich kid" background that makes him want to work for the treasure and not have it handed to him like everything else in his life.
Well they did a great job with his cheractor especially when they were escaping the prison in the van and he went from calm to psychotic in just seconds. Had the knife to Sam's throat, and after makind Sam promise half the treasure in 3 months he gets calm again, gives him money, and leaves with the promise to find Sam to collect the cash no matter where he is. When you put yourself in Sam's shoes and consider that the truth of the story is what just happened i would be a bit intimidated as well, because there are people like that in real life.
@@a.rpradipta7662 exactly. Nadine is irritating as fuck especially because she is unrealistically strong in melee combat and can even take on 2 fully grown man who is responsible for killing hundreds of her men. Like wtf is this sorcery.
The performances were amazing in this game. This scene was definitely a shocker. Not to mention Nate tried to talk his way out of a situation like he usually does and failed. 😰
This was a great game. My only gripe was the cheractor Nadine. The way they made her so overpowering that even Nathan and Sam who took on lots of prison inmates at once, Nate overcoming overwhelming odds in uncharted 1,2 and 3 yet they can't lay a finger on her. When Nate faces her it looks like the only fight he was in and lost was to a wet paper bag. They should have added to the story that you fight her 1 more time and finaly win.
Its because Nathan spent 2 years out of the game and became weak and could barely even fight! Same happened to me! Last year I took on a group and now I can't even take on my siblings!
Nadine kicked their asses because Nate & Sam are only brawlers. They are quick and know how to throw a punch but Nadine is a martial artist. Need to be trained yourself to take someone like that on.
I could understand Nate loosing a 1v1...but Nadine winning a 1v2 against the fucking drake Brothers without a scratch? NO! Absolutely no, no matter how skilled you are you will always loose if you're alone against more than 1 ennemy Nadine was just the "strong and independant woman who need no man" nothing more
The best part of Nate's character is that he isn't all that perfect, he was never the best in hand to hand combat. He just finally met somebody that could kick his ass... Plus he's getting old.
I love when Naughty Dog makes references to Argentina (Where I live) They did with Sarah in The Last of Us, now Rafe talks about ''gauchos'' and how Alcazar died here.
Even though this scene made me pissed off at Sam, I still thought he was an awesome character. One of my favorite characters in the series, I sure hope he gets his own game
The twist is really well done but the part of this scene I love the most is when Sam jumps in front of a bullet for Nate. It's like, yes Sam tricked Nate but is still willing to risk his life for him.
Why is it that Sam is still my favourite character in the series in spite of this scene and his ignorance to Nate, Elena, and Sully for the entire game? I really don't know!

I love that he later says that he could've looked it up on the internet and find out the truth. He's too excited to bother. That "plot hole" is written as a way to show Nathan's reckless eagerness to get back into the life.
I've just scene a clip on Tumblr - at 2:00 you can see Nate look towards Sam. Off screen, he checks the wound on Sam's head just for a second, but you can't see it unless you've got the camera in free mode
I saw this reveal coming a long way away, but I was very impressed at the delivery nevertheless, the way Rafe is just rubbing it in Nate’s face is just purely hurtful and made the plot twist from predictable and Meg to an absolutely fun turning point.
The story telling and voice acting was great. Like something fit for the stage. All the way up to a few seconds before the reveal I had no idea that Sam was lying the whole time. Playing as him in the prison break out sold it for me IMMIDIATLY!!
This plot twist both gave me chills of excitement and made me feel the same emotions as Nate It was so good seeing Nate living a simple life with Elena, married, house, car, steady job, it felt so nice And the last person you’d expect to come in and ruin that, solely for the purpose of working together to achieve something like treasure hunting would be a brother or sister I felt betrayed, and even hurt when Nathan said “I left my life for you” because yeah, Nathan had so much, and he risked it all to try and save his brother who didn’t even need saving Sam really pissed me off after Nate and Elena’s little separation
When I played I definitely knew that Sam was hiding something, dunno why maybe just sixth sense. But I did not expected this, I thought the prison's story were true.
I remember thinking playing the game "Sam seems way too happy trying to find this treasure while his life is on the line" Then this scene popped up and I was like, "yeah makes sense"

So in conclusion, Samuel Drake is, yes, a selfish dick. But he's also a guy struggling with life trying to find purpose in something when he has nothing or no one else in his life (still doesn't justify his BS)....
Eric Graham well he did still take that bullet shot for Nate
Eric Graham beautiful description
Lol the way Rafe says No. Makes me laugh

DarkSonic180 What about the security guards during the auction?
@@Hanakin-Sidewalker That was a black market auction run by criminals. I'm not sure the security guards were innocents, since Nate, Sam, and Sully didn't exactly do anything that warranted the guards' intent to kill.
There’s a difference between killing in self defense and killing with murderous intent.
How did Warren Kole as Rafe not get nominated for best performance?
ViPeZz because Troy Baker and Nolan North
I have to say Kole was f* cking great as Rafe, even with Troy & Nolan in the picture, all great.
Too busy playing Galaga.
Cometmoon448 lol
You can tell the voice actor for rafe is having the time of his life
This was an awesome plot-twist, especially since it's one I didn't already get spoiled about before I played the game.
1. What other clothes would he have?
2. Its assumed Hector has enough spies and power to keep tabs on Sam
Jetrox4ever 1. I don't know, but it's not a good idea to keep on a prison shirt just 5 miles outside a prison
Matthew Lee Well you know If you use your brain a little you can see it coming from miles. I mean you have watched the Crystal Skull right?
Rafe is honestly the best villain.
Boxterades Productions rafe and asav are great. But lazarevic is a whole different animal. That dude was a murderous psychotic monster lol
The way Nate feels when he discovered that Sam lied to him is exactly how Elena felt about Nate.
The way she twirled her ring in that scene broke my heart because I knew she was rethinking things
This scene proves Rafe is the best villain in all of Uncharted.

I love how Nate is such a heartwarming character with a good personality. Its just like he doesn't go beserk breaking random people's necks without a pint of remorse.
It's a videogame. He doesn't really kill people
Rafe’s voice actor was so fucking good
Damn, Sam actually took a bullet for Nathan, betrayal or not, he loves his brother.
Anyone else not see this coming at all?
I sure as hell didn't
I kind of did.
Sam always seemed pretty shady and dodgy to me.
However, I was completely blindsided by Rafe bailing Sam out.
@@KakaOfTheRealMadrid "little rock"? Dude his body went limp after his head was *bounced* off of a sharp outcropping. I was shocked he didnt have a concussion. Plot armour definitely played a part.

Again, the key word here is 'in cold-blood'. Sam and Nathan have killed numerous people in self-defence sure, but never with actual murderous intent. In fact, these are character who try not to use guns at every possible turn.
Anirudh Menon I guess ur right :)
Lol as though killing Nadine here would be in cold blood and not self defense. These dudes kill without a conscience, its the entire point of what Lazarevic told him at the end of 2. Just another reason why this story isn't that good.

@@billcipher779 when it truns red, it is just the "lucky"
4:55
Rafe: I just need Sam.
Rafe is seriously one of the most entertaining villains in gaming, I cant help but chuckle at his quotes and facial expressions. Not to mention his "spoiled rich kid" background that makes him want to work for the treasure and not have it handed to him like everything else in his life.

Having the chance to play as Sam for his fake story made this moment so much more unexpected.
0:35 I'm only laughing how Sam asked them all to put down their guns, but Rafe said "no" this way. XD
Am I the only one intimidated by Alcazar, even though its all a lie.

NO!
