Wow this is 10 years before the michell brothers were in EastEnders 20 years before lock stock and 2 smoking barrels I think this film is the same time period as scum Harry the hatchet from lock stock was in scum
Brilliant series. If only TV was like this today. The writing and research on this BBC series was incredible. Directed exceptionally well+plus the acting was just superb. No wonder Law & Order caused so much controversy back in 1978.
Glad you like our villains as much as we like your films/tv. Brad Pitt's pikey accent in Snatch was criticised in the press by journalists who'd never met a gypsy in their life. But I grew up near them and believe me it was perfect.
New Alan in the 70’s a nice guy.....we had friends in common bob greaves and Anne and Willie (who was her dog )always saying to me ‘say that again ‘he liked my cockney accent....
Brilliant, gritty and dark mini-series. It portrayed the police as being just as crooked as the criminals they chased which is why it caused a stir at the time. This truly went against more heroic representations of the cops in shows like The Sweeney.
This was a brilliant show. The same crime from three different viewpoints,in three different episodes. The villains tale, cops tale and the briefs (lawyers) tale. Superb acting from a great cast who went on to great success.
Very good acting, however even allowing for the early 70s, evidence was NEVER handled like that, and firearms charges could not simply be dropped, no matter what was being offered in terms of intel. [I work for the Met police, BTW]
Aye, and they never took bungs from sex shops, never raided them to resell back to their owners, never fabricated evidence, never hid evidence from defence counsel, never murdered Blair Peach, never took cuts from blags they permitted. Always helpful to little old ladies and kiddies. Away you go🤡
I get your point especially with regard to the earlier episodes of the series where Regan and Carter were shown to be very ruthless and uncompromising in their dealings with blaggers, thugs and kidnappers. In the first 2 series, they definitely had a raw edge which I think was toned down a bit later on to make them more likeable, although there were still episodes where they could be very tough. An interesting crossover would've been L&O's Fred Pyle vs. Jack Regan.
To get back to the original question: this was made and aired (on UK's BBC2) in 1977-8. Never seen there since - too disturbing for many with a vested interest in keeping the image of the police shining bright. A novelisation was also available for a time. Probably out of print now, but might be worth scouring second-hand bookshops for a copy.
@@Krzyszczynski the idea that has never been seen since is a popular myth. It was repeated in 1980 and has been seen a few times this century. The upload available on youtube has a BBC4 logo visible throughout. That would be impossible if it hadn't been seen since '78.
It was a brilliant and imaginative show;the same crime was shown from three points of view, in three episodes. The villains tale, the cops tale and the briefs (lawyers) tale. Superb casting with actors who went on to great success.
Pyle/Pyall does eventually get his, along with Terry Sneed, another of G F Newman's crooked cops. It's in GF's 1986 novel Set A Thief. Pyle doesn't actually appear in the book, but his name's among several others who end up getting hauled in right near the end.
I can't recommend any English Kung fu films, I don't know that any exist. But if you haven't already check out Layer cake, Rocknrolla, possibly Sexy Beast. I imagine you've seen Lock stock' ATSB? Lenny McLean is the real deal. I read his autobiography, he had an interesting life. All the Best
I feel like Alan was always waiting to get into his 60s.
Well put.
So am I... Look at that Christoph Waltz guy, no one knew him before he was 50 or 60.
He was only 39 here 😂
Fun Fact Alan Ford was in Snatch he played Bricktop
He’s like a cross between John Hurt and Clint Eastwood.
And a shade of George Harrison
That's quite a spot, very accurate.
A dash of Ray Winstone and Bob Hoskins.
😂😂😂
Alan Ford... what a brilliant villain he has been over the years...
Everyone who contributed to this performance should be very proud.
Brick Top and Charlie Slater lmao brilliant
I knew I recognised that copper.
Now we can say Stevie Mitchell and Charlie Slater

john smith brilliant I agree, now, shit like Love Island is considered good telly.....
Even now he just oozes criminality, lucky for the general public he chose acting!! Plus he helped make so much Great British output!!
0:57 That facial expression, priceless.

I met this man at ten and he gave me the most sound piece of advice and a kind word. Alan Ford, I love ya, ya ol Bastard.
What did he say?
I’m interested too

I thought it was John Hurt...
Taxi cab driver, American Werewolve in London! Great as Bricktop!
Before he was a nemesis

Great little drama, I agree. Also a snapshot of 1970s working class cockney London. Very different to the London of 2023.
Charlie Slater and Brick Top in the same room
What a performance 👏👏 specially Alan ford. I love his snatch movie. A great actor. Wish you healthy life ahead.

“Alright so it was double fucking stupid”
How is this man not holding an Oscar?
looked a bit like david bowie when he was young. i never knew alan ford was once young.
This was a very controversial series when it aired in 1978, I don't think it was repeated. It is on DVD and well worth buying. Superb acting.
Why was it controversial?
Too close to the mark probably... bent coppers, fit ups, verbals.... 😂😂😂
Was this before or after he played bass with The Jam?
Bruce Foxton
It's very sad that we've never had Alan Ford's Hamlet: 'To be or not to be, that's the fackin' question innit! Now, fack orf!"
I think he looks a bit like Walter White from Breaking bad when he was younger.
I can see it
Brick top would have jumped the table and smacked his teeth in, then got errol to feed him to the pigs
Idk man, Charlie Slater was a tough old bastard.
Not as tough as Bricktop tho

Watching an old episode of The Bill, from 1984.

GF Newman's Law and Order is one of the best cop series ever made.
Brick top. The beginning
😂😂 also the guy off of Eastenders !
Reminds me of a young Clint Eastwood with that Barnet
A man has to know his limitations
Lol young Charlie Slater.
Way better than the GQ - Vogue magazine version in the US.
Slater "You're a grarse son & you know it, so tell us who did it"
Ford "It was Muhammed I'm Hard....Bruce Lee"
Now, are we going to have a beauty contest or what?

I think the guy that's interviewing him was one of the coppers in Snatch
