    You said you don't want to pull downward because the enemy will be close enough for a punch. Well in that case, is elbow good?
    Anyway, loved the detailed tutorial. I'm from Philippines.

      Normally, you should deflect incoming force away from your center line (to the side). If you pull down, your opponent will be able to counter with elbow. It is like pulling your opponent's elbow into your own head. Happy training!
