I love to learn this stuff. Never ending supply of formations too. I actually started writing this video slightly as a comedy, but didn't like it and that last joke was the only thing to make the cut.
Well now.... I've been visiting that part of Oregon for years and didn't know about Big hole. Thanks for taking me there, I'll get there in person in April. Oh and your dog buddy pulling the sled was great!
@@MattCookOregon That would be a great video. I've been there but the snow was deep so we didn't get down into the bottom. Just being near the rim was death defining lol.
@@tomlauritzen9522 you made it in the snow nice. I tried a month ago and turned back. I was alone and didn't want to risk it. Snow seemed ok but those ice/water pools in the road were scary.
@@MattCookOregon What's scary is tagging along as you climbed a couple of Oregon's peaks...... I was terrified and I was sitting in my lazyboy chair hahahahahaha
Great job Matt! I didn’t even know Big Hole existed! Thanks for the education about Volcanism! Good to know what to look for and how it figures into the the geologic history. Loved the drone shots! Especially the one along the cliffs! Great job!
Thanks Stu. Always good to hear from you. That area is just packed. I am still looking to make my way out to the dunes. I am hoping to find someone to let me ride their atv cause that would be a fun video,
Thank you Matt. As a kid throughout the 70's and early 80's a considerable contingent from Washington County's Hillsboro/Beaverton area used to hunt Mule Deer in this area, with camps set up just to the west of Big Hole (west side of Mowich Rd). One larger camp was colloquially known as "Little Hillsboro". I never harvested a deer there, but the last time I went with my Dad in 1980 he harvested his last buck on the west rim of Big Hole. I was always interested in the geography and geology of the area, as in the course of these hunting seasons we ranged the area fairly wide on the forest service roads. I was in the area last fall for the first time in ~40 years last September 2022 on a day trip to Fort Rock, taking a brief excursion to find the old deer camp. I didn't go drive the rim of Big Hole, so thank you for this excellent video. Brings back some good memories.
Thanks for that comment. Sounds like you have a real appreciation for this land. I think its such a great area that gets ignored due to how vast it is.
It's completely crazy to me finding this comment. I come from one of the families which camped at little hillsboro, we're the Bennetts. I never camped there myself being too young but I still hunt that area. We typically camp just east of main mowich (fr 2516) directly across from the old little hillsboro site. are you familiar with red dot by any chance? it was the camp which predated little hillsboro in the early 30's. it was started by my great great grandfather. over time the party expanded and more people changed to RVs which is why they moved locations to the hillsboro site which was larger and had easier access. I want to say they made the move in the early 70's but I may be mistaken. My grandfather Marlin Bennett is still alive and to my knowledge he is the only one living whom had camped at red dot.
Thanks Rob. The group expeditions will only increase as our younger one gets to be of walking age. I can't wait. Babies are fun and all but I don't like being cooped up!
I have fond memories of camping a night in big hole. (No fire just slept and explored) We managed to get our little car down the dirt road in the beginning of September 2016. It's really nice and peaceful like you said. Congrats on the growing family! Love your sled solutions!
Nice video Matt! Absolutely love that area, so much to explore. It is worth noting to prospective visitors that this section of the Deschutes National Forest is subject to an extensive winter range closure from December 1st through March 31st. All but a few specific forest roads are closed to motor vehicles through that period to protect Mule Deer populations. Of course travelers on foot or dog sled are free to roam!
Thank you. I didn't know that. Guess I don't pay attention since I am an on foot kinda guy. I need to find some way to get public suggestions before I put out the videos cause I get all kinds of good tips after the fact.
@@MattCookOregon no problem! The FS doesn’t publicize it very well and the on road signage is hit or miss. We only know about it because of the closures in our area outside of Sisters.
Thank you. I really enjoy putting as much attention to detail as I can to these. Family is going great I just want the younger one to start walking already!
Thanks so much. I get the peaceful experience visiting so try to bring that to the video. Lots more videos like this here if interested. Tell your friends!

Me too! Love caving, canyoneering, exploring mines, really appreciate your content. As others have mentioned, you present in a very pleasant and engaging manner. Thank you-
@@MattCookOregon I think April or May. I decided on the Air 2 S because I could buy the Fly More Combo for less than the Mavic Mimi 3 Pro. It will do what I want better than the Mini (wind resistant). Better camera, tracking, OA, for $1,100 vs $1,300. Couldn’t say no based on my recreational needs. Knew you liked yours plus other satisfied owners so felt like a smart move. Thanks for all your help!😀😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍
@@lynnnorthrup8914 It's great! Only thing that will tip me into a new one is mapping features if I get more into that. Air2s can actually do some mapping anyways with an app called dronelink. Check it out that app has a free version but paid has all kinds of automation flying features.
Man I've thought about doing a video on that a few times. I've had a few comments on it too so I guess there is interest. Any geologist I've asked thinks it's nothing, just weird shadows and logging.
@@MattCookOregon Yes, I have also come up against resistance from several geologists. I think it is a old supervolcanic caldera. This was a very active geologic area due to the contact of the Basin and Range province and the Columbia flood basalts, and the Cascade Mountain range. There are confirmed supervolcanic sites in Oregon, southern Idaho, parts of Nevada, and Wyoming.
Mini3 seems aimed at beginners. I like the air 2s over the mini 3 for sure. Only benefit of mini is cost and weight. For my professional drone work I would get something bigger next time. The small size of air2s is nice but I generally fly from the parking lot anyways. Might as well get something with more flight time and quality.
@@MattCookOregon Thanks. I have the original mini and thought why get another light drone. I fly where there is wind at high elevations and wanted something more stable. I’m using it for artistic purposes and not professionally. Knew you had the Air 2 S so asked your opinion. Is the quality ok for you? Is the variable apeture worth the extra cost?
I've never had a complaint with video quality on air2s. Variable aperture could be cool but can't say I need it at all. More flight time and wind resistance sounds nice though from a mavic pro. Then I am getting interested in some of the more advanced features like mapping which the larger drones are much better for.
@@MattCookOregon I’m going to wait to see what happens with the Air 3 rumors. Otherwise the Air 2 S should serve my needs. Thanks for your input!!!!!😀👍
