@Luca Antinori That's easy. The input lag is 3x as bad in Ultimate as it is in Melee. There are way more broken mechanics despite people complaining about Melee mechanics. Too many characters have counters and they last too damn long. They removed force shielding so zoners are way more irritating to deal with. It doesn't have anywhere near the same fluidity of movement, the buffer system helps a little but it's still not comparable to the level of control you get in Melee.

See I feel for the melee community that their game is no longer at evolution because they had to fight for so long with the rest of the fighting game Community to recognize their game as a competitive game. But nowadays melee gets this bad rap that people seem to Shadow it because of the people who get angry about stuff that happens to smash melee like it was unfair. Smash melee had its time in the Limelight ultimate is here and should take its place I think it is worthy of taking its place as an excellent game with excellent mechanics and amazing ways of entertaining audiences that's all that matters especially to the people who run evolution. The melee Community needs to learn how to grow up and learn that you can't just play one game the rest of your life and expect it to last forever. You look at streamers like nairo and zero and ESAM and realize they've moved on making their streams and content more varied and they play different games and build a community instead of just relying on reputation in smash melee. the smash melee Community is big enough to live on its own now without Evo and can continue to thrive as long as it wants but the competitive world will move on with or without the salty players

@@mikejonesnoreally The reality is that it's the only game they really know how to play so it ruins opportunities for them. The only reason Melee gets big viewers is for Smash hype, and only a VERY small percentage of them care that it's Melee specifically. The 'lost viewers' won't be lost at all; they'll just be watching Ultimate instead. The only people who genuinely care about this are the 10 people that still play Melee.

IchiroCharles I reckon that they consider ultimate similar enough to melee to the point where melee isn’t necessary anymore. Additionally, you need so much extra stuff for melee that you don’t need for any other game to the point where its a huge hassle to get the resources together.

@@LeemVonNelly Of course it's my opinion, but that game doesn't do anything for me. Dumbed down mechanics and auto-combos aren't my forte. If it was BBCF, then there's a different story. It'll still be shitty to me, but if you enjoy it, that's fine and I respect that. I played BBTag for a week and I ended up realizing that it just wasn't for me. I was extremely excited for it too, but it was a disappointment in the end. We all have our preferences when it comes to fighting games, but a FIGHTING game that holds your hand through and through just isn't worthy of being called a true fighting game.

i said it was Harder for the Aging, older scene to swap to ultimate because they know they'll get bodied by the new kids. Melee is a bunch of old-guys trying to hold onto what last shred of "Hype" they can. the game is done, we've done all we can do in it, there is fuck all progression, you know what to expect. there is no Dev Support and any 3rd party support is outright banned by Nintendo, even if Project M would breath new life into the Melee scene or even the use of Emulators to get 60fps (Which would dramatically change the frame mechanics of Melee and give it new life)

Melee has a direct sequel with patching, support, online play including online tournaments and the like. Ultimate has a scene that can grow and grow and grow outside of limited tournaments, which Melee is using as life support. the only reason Melee pros are complaining is because they can't swap to Ultimate and be good, the talent in Ultimate casts a huge shadow over them and none of them want to work for their spots again. plus the whole fact they're getting on in terms of Age and most eSports players retire before 30 because the reaction times are just not there anymore.
Melee is an amazing game, but like all good things it's time to end it and let the newer generation take over where they left off. lest it becomes the old racist, geriatric grandpa of the Fighting game world. that everyone says "Ok grandpa" and shoves back into the corner.

Many of these reactions are clearly ovrereacting for the sake of entertainment, they're definitely over the top but I don't even find that many of them childish. I think all of them have grounds for being angry or frustrated, the logic to remove Melee isn't really sound. The game pulls in a massive crowd both live at the stage as well as online and hasn't had a bad decline. I don't see what doesn't qualify it for EVO and I myself don't even play smash or follow the scene that closely.
I think it was Hugs that was trying to say something that with less emotion behind it, which was that it'd make more sense if Melee was getting replaced by some other massive game/brand/franchise but those two games don't really cut close at all. To elaborate on this point, the only logic I can see or accept here is that they don't wanna have two Smash games. But again I would only agree with this if EVO's line up was actually so saturated to the point where melee and ultimate would take too much space. The two games in here don't really do justice for that argument. It's fair if EVO wants to try something new, but then imo out of all these games it makes the least sense to pick Melee, if you wanted to introduce a new or bigger audience, why would you cut one of your largest, off.
Again I'm mostly speaking from a company type of view, as a company or tourney provider, this is a really fkn weird move from EVO. I personally don't mind their decision, since I don't follow Melee as closely as prob do. But I think any hardcore fan or player have every reason they need to be upset by this decision as the argument for it is incredibly weak imo.
If we're being honest. Melee was never really even a fighting game. Just a disgusting mess of glitches and exploits. Gotta love how Smash doesn't want Melee anymore, but Melee has no idea why anyone wouldn't want them though.

@@IAmValefree all I know is that whenever I go to the "Smash" section of any tournament, regardless of the version, there's an ever-present miasma of filth. I tend to not differentiate between "the smell of a dumpster fire" and "the smell of a dead rat in the wall", it's all fucking vomit inducing.

Melee had one of the longest runs at Evo. The fact that a game over 15 years old was appearing at the world's largest fighting game tournament is a testament to its legacy. But, it's time to let new blood enter the scene, allow other FGC's to have a time to be recognized. Melee will always have major tournaments around the world probably until all CRT TVs in existence finally break. It's time to acknowledge that Melee isn't invincible.

Personally dont get why melee players are having such a cry. They can have a side bracket. You dont see the hardcore ST or 3S players crying there game isnt included. A lot of the melee people play ultimate so the lack of cross over between smash 4 and melee isnt an excuse for them to still be a main game anymore.
If melee was the only title then I would agree, but there are so many others getting played and melee has a much larger community compared to some of the other games on the list. Not including it is just stupid and will hurt their viewership.

@@Trivselteknikern melee's viewership isn't going to grow. As a business evo wants to grow and expand, so they bring in the new things which veteran players move onto and draws in new players. Moving onto the new thing is more likely to net bigger rewards and continually push growth which they can capitalize. Like why did sony make the ps3 if the ps2 sold so many copies? Same logic, so they could move onto the next thing and expand upon their business and continue growing.
TL;DR viewership means diddly squat if you're not going to grow and draw in new audiences. Melee's fanbase is melee's fanbase. New players aren't really attracted to it as opposed to the widely available options nowdays.

GameCube sales: 22mil

Melee/Gamecube sales = 0.32
Ultimate/Switch sales = 0.28
Overall they're very close, and I think sales are a dumb comparison anyway, but it's unfair to expect melee to beat ultimate in sales seeing as the GameCube didn't even sell enough to support that many melee's. Also the 7million sales number comes from 2006. Do you really think Nintendo has been selling melee for the last 20 years?
@@gigabowser2031 Sales is an indication that a product is well received and successful. That`s basic business. not a "shit" way to determine which product is better. Gamecube didn`t sell enough because it was not a good product compared to lets say ps2 which outsold the gc by 750%

Good thing most SF fans knew how to move on, granted Capcom taught them how by essentially releasing updated versions of the same game as if it were new.
The melee community doesn't need to move on. They just have to accept that they were never entitled to have a spot at EVO. It was earned and other games are meant to earn their spot. Melee did a lot for the FGC and EVO can always honor it in ways other than holding tournaments for it. Melee is fortunate enough to have such a consistent run at EVO and they should be grateful people decided to keep holding tournaments for it post Smash 4... and if I remember correctly, Smash 4 almost didn't make it to EVO because of Nintendo. The point Thresh Prince is making isn't that Melee actually needs EVO. We all know Melee will be fine on its own.
The problem is that, while Melee was growing every year it was on EVO, people continued to say shit like that to begin with. Melee elitists chanted over Nairo's win at brawl, as well as Zero's win at Sm4sh. They shit on every other game at EVO. They continued to taunt TOs online about how they'd 'never get cut cause that $$$.'
A lot of people I know who play traditional fighters like Melee. The problem is, it's never the other way around. The only high-level player that even plays other fighting games is Leffen.

Damn, I've played melee for 4 years now (along with smash4 and other fighters), but some of these top melee players that I've watched and followed over the years are being pretty ungrateful. The sendoff video was just fine, and it was a bummer for like a minute and then I was over it. How many other fighters get a sendoff from evo? How many that are 18+ years old? Melee has had an amazing run at evo, but the only people who didn't have a childish reaction in this were Leffen and Nairo.

Trying to lump very different games together when they are fundamentally different is ridiculous. Final Fantasy and Fable are both RPGs. But one is a turn-based JRPG, the other is an Action RPG. They are fundamentally different genres. Calling people elitist because they don't see Smash as a fighting game is rather narrow sighted. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter are different in terms of mechanics, but they are similar enough to be in the same genre. Smash is extremely different. The goal in Smash is to knock your opponent off stage while in a fighting game it's to lower their health bar and win rounds. Fighting Games look a certain way. Smash is its own genre.

Unist being at Evo has brought the game a lot of new fans and exposure that the game really needed since its so underappreciated.
